ROCK!
Rock was found lying in the middle of the road because his owner got angry at him and threw him out! This sweet big guy is eight years old and heartworm positive. Our vets say that he can live comfortably on heartworm preventative and won't get any worse. He should be in a relatively quiet home without a lot of exercise. He adores everyone he meets including adults, children, kittens, cats, and other dogs. He will sit by your side for hours if you just rub his head, and he's amazingly well behaved in public. The Animal Control Officer who found him even takes him into town hall with her! This guy is a true love! Is there someone out there who can give this guy his forever home?
Who We Are
Ahimsa Haven was incorporated in 1999 as a nonprofit animal rescue group. Our mission is to find good homes for abused, abandoned, homeless and unwanted domestic animals. Ahimsa is a term from an eastern religion and means "To do no harm, in thought or deed, to any living creature." We are raising money to build a shelter in Winchendon, MA and to provide emergency medical care for animals in need, along with routine medical care for animals in our foster care program. Every penny we raise goes to the animals - no one gets a salary!

http://www.vetcity.com/Infocenter/TurtleCare1.html
Veterinary Associates Stonefield Home Locations Pet Savers Dr. Vaughn ... Contact Environmental Temperature, Hibernation and Diseases Environmental Temperature and Frequency of Feeding Box turtles can be fed daily, though many hobbyists feed them every other day or 2-3 times weekly. They will not eat at low environmental temperatures and likewise cannot digest food well at low temperatures. Consistently warm environmental temperatures must be maintained, especially at night, for box turtles kept in colder climates, or for those not allowed to hibernate. Hibernation Any box turtle that has recently been ill should not be allowed to hibernate. Hibernation results in a general decrease in overall resistance of the turtle. Consequently, latent or chronic illness in a hibernating turtle can then create more serious and even life-threatening disease. Hibernation is not necessary for the health and well-being of box turtles. Unlike regular sleep, hibernation involves a more prolonged period of inactivity, accompanied by a substantial decrease in metabolic activity, both of which enable the animal to survive Periods during which environmental conditions are relatively harsh. Newly acquired box turtles should not be allowed to hibernate until their health status has been accurately determined. Hatchling box turtles should not be allowed to hibernate until after their third year of life. Bar turtles can be kept from hibernating by maintaining their winter environmental temperature 5-10 degrees higher than their summer temperature. Under these conditions, box turtles usually appear sluggish. If they refuse to eat, Periodic forced-feedings are recommended.

Curiosity: Not Just for Cats
The shock collar often proves effective in teaching a dog to avoid porcupines, skunks, opossums and other vermin (including potentially rabid raccoons). There are also some things you can do in the field. To remove odor, I have no personal experience on which to report. Various sources recommend a bath with tomato or lemon juice or vinegar. Crushed charcoal may also aid in sucking up the smell.
Traps, Snares and Wire
Make sure the pair of pliers you carry in your hunting coat has a cutting edge for wire. They may help save a dog pinned in a fence by its hind legs, or caught in a snare, the latter of which can be lethal. Set by trappers for coyotes or foxes, snares work by suffocating an animal. Once your dog is caught around the neck, the only way to free it is to cut the snare. If your dog blunders into a leg-hold predator trap, use the dowel and tape to muzzle him, then gently open the trap and remove the dog. Check the animal for cuts and potentially broken bones.

If it appears that the baby fell out of a nest, then simply locate the nest nearby and carefully place the bird back in the nest. Despite presistent fallacies, the parents cannot smell your odor on the baby bird, and will usually accept the young back into the nest. Young birds often fall from nests after wind storms, when the nesting sites are disturbed by construction, predators, or children, or when an older sibling kicks them out of the nest. If you cannot locate a nest, keep the bird in a suitable warm container, and contact your local SPCA or a certified wildlife care facility immediately (see contact list below). WWW.CRITTERCAREWILDLIFE.ORG
Urban Wildlife
Wild animals move into our homes because continued urbanization has destroyed their homes. Please keep this in mind when dealing with any uninvited wildlife guest and treat them with patience and compassion. Does the animal need to be rescued?
The general rule of thumb is that if the animal doesn't run away when you approach it, then something is wrong! Remember, it is far better for baby animals to be raised by their parents. Don't assume they've been abandoned until you have monitored the situation for some time - the animal's mother could just be out foraging for food. Raccoons most frequently seek out attics, garage rafters, crawl spaces or sundecks as isolated, safe places to have their young. By mid-June, when the young are old enough to climb the family will seek a den closer to a food source. When weaned the young will begin foraging. If you don't want them in your yard - remove any possible food sources.
For example, don't put your garbage out until the pick-up time. Use Bungi cord restrainers on your garbage can lids. Skunks can be a great benefit to gardeners because they consume a wide variety of insects, grubs, and gypsy moth caterpillars. If they do take up residence under a porch or garden shed, wait until late June, then sprinkle a thin layer of flour around the hole and examine for tracks soon after dark. When you discover tracks leading out, but not back in, seal the hole with lumber, wire fencing or concrete. Skunks are diggers, so you will have to extend your barrier 12-18 inches below the surface. Remember, skunks are peaceful animals that will usually walk calmly away when disturbed - provided that you don't overreact. Spraying, is used only as a last resort when the animal feels seriously threatened.

(Only a smell a mother could love! Crystal had the unique opportunity of becoming a ‘mom’ to a litter of baby skunks. Having these babies accept you as surrogate mother, is truly an amazing experience.)
Crystal who visited us from Iowa shares her thoughts about her internship as well –

Working with animals has been a passion of mine since I was little. I grew up with a love of all creatures and of nature. When I searched the Internet for an internship, I wanted a facility that was as passionate about animals as I was. When I found Critter Care - I was excited to see that the program provided an internship that fit my qualifications.
(Crystal also had a chance to spend time with Hoover our Animal Ambassador. She is a one-year-old bobcat who is unable to be released. She was taken from her native environment at just a few weeks of age and raised as a domestic pet. She is too friendly to survive on her own so now must live her life in captivity.)
Along with raising my babies, I was also able to learn about all of the animals here including the skunks, marmot, bobcat, opossums, deer and coyotes. I was taught how to give examinations of incoming animals, various medical procedures and how to care for the sometimes-sick animals that were admitted to the Centre. We had a chance to go on vet visits with different animals and also on occasion to go on an animal rescue.
