Welcome to the Small Animal Clinic Homepage. Feel free to browse through the page, or go directly to:
The Veterinary Teaching Hospital cares for about 16,000 small animals each year. Most are dogs and cats, but we also care for many other pets including birds, rabbits, ferrets, pocket pets and reptiles. These companion animals come to the hospital with a wide variety of illnesses, yet have a common need for healing.
In our search for the source of your pet's problems, we rely on state-of- the-art technology, our diagnostic skills and your knowledge of your animal's behavior. We have yet to conquer the language barrier with your pet - a barrier that makes our work even more challenging.
Small Animal Medicine
Small Animal Medicine outpatient services include general physical exams, routine diagnostic procedures, disease prevention, and treatment of uncomplicated diseases. Treatment beyond basic medical care goes through internal medicine and special medical services. More complicated medical cases may require specific organ function testing, in-depth body fluid and tissue tests, and body imaging procedures.

Garter Snakes
An overview of their natural history and care in captivity. Natural History
Garter snakes (genus Thamnophis ) are one of the most common of snakes. Found in a variety of habitats, they are often the first snake a youngster sees and catches. Varying according to species, garters are generally striped against a plain or checkered background color. Often delicately or subtly colored, even those with vivid red or yellow stripes or yellow ventral scales are quick to blend in with their background in the wild. Living between 3 to 10 years in captivity, these snakes generally do not grow to any great size, reaching about three feet with a very narrow girth. (Click here for information on the natural history of garters in general and the plight of the endangered San Francisco garter in particular.) Garters rely primarily upon sight when hunting, "hearing" (sensing ground vibrations), taste and smell, the latter two combined in use with the Jacobson's organ located in the in roof of the mouth. They are quite agile, a trait which also enables them to successfully capture prey. They encounter their prey while moving through their territory during the cooler parts of the dayearly morning, late afternoon and early evening.

Every exotic pet has some specialized care needs. Even common small pets may require more care than thought. Before buying any new pet, know what sort of committment you are making. To do this, learn all you can first. Otherwise, it'll be impossible for you to to make a responsible decision and and you won't be able to honestly answer these three questions:
  • Will this new pet and you make a good match?
Animals have habits and behaviors based on that critter's own uniqueness. Examples include sleep cycles, activity levels, need for affection and many other factors. A strong human/pet bond will only develop if these are compatable. Knowing an animal's habits and behaviors is important.
  • Are you are willing and able to provide the best possible care? Some animals have simple care needs, but others - especially exotics - require a lot of time, effort, space and money. Knowing what an animal will need - and being honest with yourself about your ability to provide the necessary care - is extremely important.
  • Do you really want this critter?

Garters can function during cool weather (down to 16° C/60° F) and in fairly warm weather (up to 34° C/93° F). They strive to maintain their body temperature range between 22-32° C (72-88° F), with their optimum range being 29-30° C (84- 86° F).

Q What should I do about opossums or skunks that hang Can we keep it as a pet?A No. It is AGAINST the law to have ANY wild animal or bird as a pet.
    http://www.projectwildlife.org/faqs.htm
FAQs Q: If I touch a baby bird will the mother abandon/reject it? A: No. This is usually true for mammals because they have a very good sense of smell. Most birds have a poor sense of smell and will sometimes even accept "foster babies" of the same age in their nests. Q: A: It is most likely skunks feeding on the grubs in the soil. In the larval stage these grubs eat the roots of grass and other garden plants. To get rid of them go to your local nursery or home center and ask for "beneficial nematodes." Apply them according to the directions and this biological control should eliminate both the grubs and the skunks. Q: What should I do about opossums or skunks that hang around the house or actually come in through the pet door.? A: Stop leaving pet food outside or near the pet door! Q: How can I keep migrating ducks from taking up residence in my pool? A: Q: I have birds nesting above my front door and they are making a mess. What can I do? A: Wait until the babies have fledged. Then devise some sort of barrier (i.e., rolled chicken wire) to prevent future nesting. DO NOT disturb the nest!

Hi Susan, I read this about deterring skunks: Place a radio near a known skunk den and keep it on loud during the day. Wait until the animal has begun their nightly foray and locate all entrances and exits. Block all except one and use repellents or frightening strategies to scare the skunks out. To be certain the animals have left, sprinkle flour at the exit and watch for footprints that lead away from the opening. When you are sure the animal is gone, securely close the opening. Note: Make sure it's not a mother with babies, and if so allow extra time (days) for them to leave the area!
