Wild animals (e.g., skunks, raccoons and bats) behaving abnormally - such as attempting to interact with or attack pets, stumbling, or acting disoriented - should be reported to the local police precinct or the Center for Animal Care and Control ( CACC ) Animal Rescue at Dr. Frieden said, “While there has not been a human case of rabies in New York City in more than 50 years, New Yorkers should take precautions to ensure that children and pets avoid wild animals such as raccoons, bats and skunks - especially those that may be exhibiting abnormal behavior. Furthermore, New Yorkers should remember to license their pets and have them vaccinated against the rabies virus.” As infected pets can pass rabies along to their owners, all New Yorkers should ensure that their pet's rabies vaccinations are current. Pets can become infected with rabies through contact with rabid wild animals. Because of this, it is important that your dog or cat have up-to-date rabies vaccinations. Because a current trend in the United States indicates that there has been a higher incidence of rabies in cats than in dogs in recent years, rabies vaccination is especially important for cats. Cats left outdoors to roam have a greater chance of exposure to rabid animals, but even indoor cats should be vaccinated, as occasionally they may get out and/or wild animals, such as bats or raccoons, may get into houses through open doors, windows, or uncapped chimneys. You should get your pet vaccinated at a private veterinarian’s office or at a free state/municipal-sponsored rabies clinic. Do Not Feed or Handle Wild Animals. STRIPED SKUNKS occur throughout Missouri, although they are most common in agricultural and forest edge habitats. Their fur is shiny black with varying amounts of white on the head, back and tail. Adults are about two feet long, including the tail. Spotted skunks occur primarily in southern Missouri, but nowhere are they abundant. They are about one-half the size of striped skunks. A characteristic strong, pungent odor results when skunks spray musk from their scent glands. These shy, secretive animals discharge their scent only when disturbed or harassed. Skunks are nocturnal, and while they do not hibernate, they may be inactive for extended periods during winter. They feed on fruits, berries and insects, often digging cone-shaped holes in lawns to remove grubs. Insect-infested turf may be overturned in large patches. Small mammals, ground-nesting birds and eggs are eaten on occasion. Skunks live in underground dens, usually renovated woodchuck burrows, or in rocky crevasses. In rural and suburban areas skunks may take refuge beneath buildings and in the crawl space under porches. In late winter skunks seek mates and breed. After about 2 months gestation the young are born in the dens, and by summer they join the mother in foraging for food.

This musk can be expelled as either a fine mist or as droplets for distances up to 3.7 m (12 ft). Musk glands contain enough musk for 5 - 6 sprays and refill within a week. Exposure to the musk may cause nausea, swelling of the nose lining, and eye irritation. Breeding takes place from February to April. A litter of 4-11 young are born in a burrow after a gestation averaging 63 days. The young skunks, called "kittens," begin to eat solid food at 6 - 7 weeks of age and leave the den with the female on nightly foraging trips when they are weaned at 8 weeks of age. Kittens leave the care of the female at 12 - 14 weeks of age and disperse to live on their own.
