UNH Professor's Expertise Is the Architecture of Skyscrapers
By Erika Mantz
UNH News Bureau
October 23, 2001
Editors and News Directors: We offer the following as a story idea you may wish to follow up on for a feature. Professor Andrew can be reached at 862-4693. DURHAM, N.H. The first skyscraper was built in Chicago in 1884 by William LeBaron Jenney. Professor David Andrew, an art historian in the University of New Hampshire's Department of Art and Art History since 1976, teaches modern architectural history and has made a particular study of skyscrapers. After the collapse of the World Trade Center towers, Andrew says, "I have no doubt skyscrapers will continue to be built. They are an investor's dream come true, but I have great reservations about the skyscraper as a building type. The terrible events of Sept. 11 reminded us how vulnerable these structures are, especially at that scale and with that kind of construction. This would probably be a good time for a review of the practicality and safety of these structures." Prior to the WTC, skyscrapers employed a steel skeletal frame with columns and girders distributed throughout the entire building. This is true of the Empire State Building, for example, which remained standing after a B-25 accidentally struck it in 1945. But the WTC, designed by Minoru Yamasaki in the mid-1960s, introduced a revolutionary new method for skyscraper construction in which the exterior walls, with their many steel-reinforced concrete columns, did most of the work. The Trade Towers were basically big hollow tubes.

NYC Architecture - Art Deco

The period termed "art deco" manifested itself roughly between the two world wars, or 1920 to 1939. Many actually stretch this period back to 1900 and even as far as the late 1950's, but work of this time is generally considered to be more of an influence to the Art Deco style, or having been influenced by the style. As with many other art movements, even work of today is still being influenced by the past. This period of design and style did not just affect architecture, but all of the fine and applied arts as well. Furniture, sculpture, clothing, jewelry and graphic design were all influenced by the Art Deco style.
Common themes Basically it was a "modernization" of many artistic styles and themes from the past. You can easily detect in many examples of Art Deco the influence of Far and Middle Eastern design, Greek and Roman themes, and even Egyptian and Mayan influence. Modern elements included echoing machine and automobile patterns and
shapes such as stylized gears and wheels, or natural elements such as sunbursts and flowers.

Modern Architecture
"Still the problem is a serious one that won't go away. If we all go on speaking each other's architectural language and imitating each other's culture, the result will be worldwide architectural entropy. The built world will decline from difference into sameness. Just as we see indigenous verbal language will become universal."
The above quote aptly describes the difficult tasks that architects facedesigning buildings with individuality. The architectural dichotomy of form and function must be reconciled. If an architect can overcome the aforementioned obstacles, then an icon is created.
Unlike Cathedrals that represented an attempt to reach God, American culture attempts to play God. The skyscrapers of today exhibit this desire. The American concept of "bigger is better," is manifested through Modern architecture.

"This phenomenon cannot be stopped simply because these two buildings came down," Ali said. "First of all, egos will always want to go higher." A second factor that practically guarantees future construction of tall buildings, he said, is a global population explosion. "Everywhere, people are moving from villages to cities," he said. "And with rapid population growth, land is scarce and expensive, particularly in big cities," leaving developers and builders nowhere to go but up.

Toronto-Dominion Centre and Musson Cattell Mackey's TD Tower in Vancouver), I favour the earlier skyscrapers for their ornate detailing and their individual "personalities". I also appreciate Post-modernism's attempt to rekindle the artistic quality of architecture, a quality that seems to have been muted by the matter-of-fact International Style. For me, although function and simplicity promote efficient working and living, imagination and whimsy promote human spirit. The following are some of my favourite buildings (including some Modernist ones!). Each says something important about my personality and my tastes...
Early 20th Century At the beginning of the century, the skyscraper was often inspired by Classical, Gothic, and Renaissance architectural styles of previous centuries. Starting around 1930, it started taking on its own individual style, highly influenced by the Art Deco movement. The aim of Art Deco was to pay homage to the modern machine age by imbuing it with an original, non-traditional sense of luxury and opulence. Regular repetitions of clean, sharp geometric shapes; conventional, stylised motifs of animals and foliage; bold colours; and symmetry all epitomise this style. Towers used modern materials such as glass and plastics, as well as rich natural materials such as silver, chrome, jade, and ivory. Art Deco went out of style during World War II, but it saw a renewed interest starting in the late 60s and is still used in buildings today. Big Ben (St. Stephen's Tower)

The vast metropolitan capital of Japan, Tokyo is Japanese for "capital of the east". Tokyo is centred around the huge Imperial Palace and gardens, and forms an enormous urban area with neighbouring city Yokohama and various smaller cities. Due to Tokyo's location on the Pacific and Eurasian techtonic plates, it is constantly bombarded with earthquakes. This caused many of the buildings to be lower in height than those of major economic centers of its size. The city was built radially, not upward like cities such as New York and Hong Kong. However, this fact has not deterred Tokyo from building skyscrapers, and the modern-day city boasts more high-rise buildings than just about any other city in Asia - possibly even the world. Engineering is a key feature of Tokyo's skyscrapers, taking precedence over height and beauty. A recent trend has seen numerous super-high-rise residential towers erected, and this looks set to increase as land becomes ever more scarce and engineering ever more advanced. 40- and 50-storey apartment buildings are already becoming commonplace.
