Culture
Culture is an important part of Slovak life. Well developed network of theatres (36 in 1996 on a relatively small territory, 56 museums, 18 galleries, 25 observatories, 4 zoological gardens) as well as a system of 2706 public libraries and growing number of magazines show high interest of Slovak people in culture. Impressive is the number of daily newspapers being published in the capital of Bratislava (over 10) which is one of the highest in the world. About 1 thousand movable monuments of culture and about 7 thousand immovables (castles, palaces, manor houses, churches and even reservations of entire city monuments, some of which have been included into the list of UNESCO) are registered on the state list. Over 6 million artefacts documenting the rich history of Slovakia have been preserved and opened to the public in more than a hundred museums and art galleries.

ARTICLE Garry Gillard Mind and Culture: Freud and Slovakia M/C: A Journal of Media and Culture 3.2 (2000) 'culture' 'Let me give you an analogy; analogies, it is true, decide nothing, but they can make one feel more at home.'
Sigmund Freud New Introductory Lectures This paper emerged from a larger study of Freud's view of culture, which used elements of Freud's own way of proceeding to mount a critique of the elaboration of that view. It is proposed here that the use of analogy is foundational to Freud's procedure in building his model of the mind, rather than just a temporary means to an end, and, crucially, that Freud is himself unaware of both the necessity of the analogical move and also of his desire for it. The creation of the concept of the Freudian psyche is a rhetorical tour de force , a structure made of figures of speech, the chief among which is the analogy. Freud constructs an analogy between culture and mind: what is left of his theory of both if this rhetorical connexion is removed? Bit 1 In the opening pages of one of his last works Freud considers the problem of the interpretation of culture, and he concludes that there too it is a question of getting the patient on the couch: '... one is justified [he writes] in attempting to discover a psychoanalytic that is, a genetic explanation ...' in that psychoanalysis is a method of explaining the origins of present condition of such things as states of mind, to which culture more generally is analogous (

They includes the High Tatras, Low Tatras, Greater Fatra, Lesser Fatra and Slovenske Rudohorie. There are many spots and facilities for winter sports, especially for ski. Phenomenal curative spas and health resorts are well known over the Europe. Many health cures consist of various original methods originally introduced in these areas.

Unification News for September and October 1999. IRFF project ‘Cultureof Peace’ held slovakia. by Massimo Trombin and Magda Balentova.
    http://www.tparents.org/UNews/unws990910/Irff_archeology.htm
Unification News for September and October 1999 IRFF project ‘Culture of Peace’ held Slovakia by Massimo Trombin and Magda Balentova "Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defense of peace must be constructed." This principle, found in the preamble of the UNESCO constitution, was the motto of the first day of the IRFF international volunteers camp. The theme of the camp was "The Culture of Peace" and it was organized in Slovakia from 16th to 25th July 1999. 26 volunteers representing 12 different countries and three continents gathered in the historical village of "Sahy" situated on the Slovak - Hungarian border. One of the purposes of their gathering was to join local professionals in the archaeological research of a medieval monastery located in Sahy. This was also a pilot project for IRFF, an event with emphasis on the Friendship characteristics of IRFF. The cultural element of the program and the project "Culture of Peace" fulfilled the goal of more emphasis of cross-cultural friendship. The IRFF staff, together with the participants, can be called a laboratory for an experiment in friendships across cultural boundaries, and from the outcome we can safely say that it was a success. The days of the camp where divided into several sections. The first two days focused on orientation and education, after which followed 5 days of work, and the last day was reserved for reflection and the closing ceremony. On Friday evening at the opening ceremony, welcoming remarks and a presentation on the topics of the history of the Sahy area and UNESCO works in Slovakia was given by Ms Dvorakova. She is the Vice-director of the Slovak National Institute of Monuments Preservation and a member of the UNESCO National Commission in Slovakia.

Travel Center Country Guide: SLOVAKIA Business Culture Greetings and Courtesies Business Ethic and Framework Meetings and Decision Making Women GREETINGS AND COURTESIES Slovaks will greet foreign visitors warmly. It is customary to shake hands with everyone at an initial meeting. Men normally wait for women and older people to extend their hands first. Courtesy requires that you use a proper title when addressing Slovaks, along with their surnames. Gifts are given at most social and business meetings. Learning a few phrases of the Slovak language will go a long way in breaking down the natural reserve of your Slovak host. BUSINESS ETHIC AND FRAMEWORK The citizens of Slovakia are committed to democracy and freedom, things Slovaks have been without for decades. The pace of life is slow in Slovakia, and this is reflected in their way of doing business. Slovaks are punctual, however, and expect their foreign visitors to be also. MEETINGS AND DECISION MAKING Preparing for a meeting in Slovakia means planning far in advance. It is also important to arrive on time although, upon your arrival, expect to find a message requesting that the meeting be delayed. Slovaks are serious about business, but they won't respond to an aggressive approach on the part of foreign business associates. Slovaks know how to use their charm and hospitality to their advantage. They are, however, reluctant to show their feelings. Sometimes Slovaks will feign agreement with visitors because they are reluctant to firmly say "no." Slovaks would rather respond with "we shall see."

    The High Tatras
The High Tatras are the smallest alpine mountain range in the world, measuring just 16 miles in length and 10 miles across - yet within this small area there are 20 peaks rising above 2,500 metres. The Lower Tatras, by contrast, extend over a far larger area, but there the highest peaks do not reach much above 2,000 metres. Finally there are also the limestone mountains of the White Tatras, a remote and still largely unspoilt area that has hardly yet been opened up to visitors.
    A fledgling state
    Artistic variety
    Tradition
    Music
The Slovaks really know how to celebrate in style - with music, dance, plenty to eat and drink, and of course their traditional costumes. Music, both traditional and classical, plays an important part in Slovak life. In the 1960s a series of world-class opera and concert singers began to emerge from Slovakia, with artists such as Peter Dvorsky, Edita Grúberová, Sergej Kopcák, and the violin virtuoso Bohdan Warchal.
    Mountains and castles
For centuries Slovakia, lying as it does in the south-east corner of Central Europe, came under repeated threat of attack by Huns and other horse-rider tribes. Later the ruling dynasties of Hungary, Poland and Austria constantly jostled for influence over the wealthy territory between the Carpathians and the Danube. Not surprisingly, then, you can still see many fortifications perched high on rocky vantage points to guard the valleys and hillsides.
