http://home.nextra.sk/averill/bapt.html
The History of Baptists in Slovakia The Reformation and persecution in Slovakia The first reports of Luther's activities and his writings were brought into Slovakia by merchants just after his public debate with Johann Eck in 1519. His first supporters were among German burghers in the larger towns of central and eastern Slovakia. In 1521, T. Preisner of Lubica read Luther's Ninety-five Theses from his pulpit. The ecclesiastical hierarchy and the lesser Hungarian nobles approved a decree in April 1523 that "all Lutherans and those favoring them...should have their property confiscated and themselves punished with death as heretics and foes of the Holy Saint Virgin Mary." However, the Turkish victory at the battle of Mohács, August, 29, 1526, in which the Hungarians lost their army, their king, two archbishops and five bishops made enforcement of this decree difficult. In the 1530's and 1540's, Lutheranism was adopted by many of the towns of central and eastern Slovakia. During this same period, Anabaptists began to appear in Slovakia. First in the mining towns of central Slovakia and in the towns of Spiš (Levoèa, Spišska Nová Ves, Švedlár). One of the best known Anabaptist preachers in Slovakia was Andrej Fischer who was executed for his faith by being thrown from the castle of Krásna Hôrka in 1539. In 1547, Anabaptists that were expelled from Bohemia began to settle in western Slovakia. Soon their numbers swelled to several thousand. They were given the name "Habáni" taken from the German word "haushaben." They led an autonomous existence led by the "Servant of the Word." They were masters in making pottery, built water systems, mills and excelled in the arts of medicine.

Ivan Derer:
The Autonomist Movement in Slovakia, 1938
On this occasion I cannot go into all the causes of this phenomenon. One of the causes is Hungarianism As I have already indicated Hungarianism meant the dominance of the ruling classes and the subjugation of the masses. In the days when Hungarianism manifested itself in the process of Magyarization this meant the predominance of not only the nobility and gentry but also of the townspeople, the bulk of the priesthood and the intelligentsia who had been Magyarized in the schools, over the Slovak masses, totally neglected spiritually and mentally as they were and living a wretched existence. This process of Magyarization, of implanting a Hungarian mentality in the Slovaks, was so intense throughout many centuries in former Hungary, and so completely dominated generation after generation, that even the breaking up of Hungary and the liberation of Slovakia has not entirely freed the Slovaks from the moral conseqluences of the thousand years of subjugation and serfdom. These conditions are finely described by the Slovak authoress Timrava in her novel entitled Two Ages . She there portrays the life of a Slovak village before the War. She draws a plastic picture of the moral and mental degradation of the Slovak masses who allow themselves to be the object of every possible provocation on the part of the denationalized intelligentsia, for the thousand-year yoke has blunted them so that they are no longer conscious of human and national dignity. Indeed they have sunk so low that they laud their own murderers and abuse those who make a stand against tyranny. The authoress has found the right expression for that aspect of Slovak life when she exclaims with a pained cry: "Slaves!"

Printable version Tuesday August 29 1939 Slovakia Occupied by German Troops The whole of Slovakia is now fully occupied by German troops according to Slovakian radio. An announcement late last night confirmed earlier reports that there was a heavy German presence in the country. Slovakia, although independent, has a treaty of friendly protection with the German Reich. Reports state that posters have been appearing in every village announcing that the German military occupation was made in order to protect Slovakia from Polish aggression and ordered the Slovaks to welcome the soldiers who had come to help them. This continues the theme of the appeal made by Father Tiso, the Slovak Prime Minister yesterday evening. However, although the Slovak people remain unconvinced about the possibility of a Polish invasion, the Germans and the Slovak Government are taking it all very seriously. The movement of German troops and supplies, which had stopped during the last couple of days, began again and nearly 80,000 German troops passed through Bratislava during last night and today. Some have stayed in Bratislava, either in schools or Slovak army barracks, but most of them went on to man various points along the Polish frontier. This morning three German river gunboats arrived and anchored on the German side of the Danube in Bratislava, and they were followed later by three large oil tankers which tied up in the harbour. These are reported to be ready to supply fuel for the motorised troops on the Polish border.

JEWS IN PRE-WAR AND WAR HISTORY OF SLOVAKIA March 1939 Slovakia was declared an independent state, with Father Jozef Tiso, a Catholic priest, as Prime Minister, and with the Hlinka People's party, a right-wing Catholic nationalist group, as the only legal party. Slovakia had to adhere to the German-Italian-Japanese axis, to provide rail and road access for the Germans to the east, and after the German attack on Russia, also to provide fighting troops. In October 1939 Tiso was elected President; pro-Nazi Voytech Tuka became Prime Minister; Sano Mach, head of the Hlinka Guard, became Minister of the Interior, and Ferdinand Durcansky, Foreign Minister.
    Jews in Prewar Slovakia
In 1938 about 135,000 Jews lived in Slovakia, of whom 40,000 lived in the territory ceded to Hungary (Ruthenia and Subcarpathia). About 5,000 emigrated voluntarily before the war, leaving about 90,000 Jews, 3 percent of the population. Slovakia was poorer and far less industrialized than the historic Czech crown provinces of Bohemia and Moravia, and so were its Jews. They were engaged mostly in retail trade and handicrafts, servicing the peasantry. The small segment of well-to-do Jews spoke Hungarian and were assimilated, maintaining religious congregations of a somewhat lukewarm character. Most other Jews were highly traditional, among whom Hasidic rebbes enjoyed huge followings.

Founded in 1918, it united within its political framework the Jewries of the "historic countries" (Bohemia, Moravia, and part of Silesia), connected with the Hapsburg Empire from 1526 and under its direct control from 1620, and of Slovakia and Carpatho-Russia, an integral part of Hungary, from the tenth century. As of January 1, 1993, Czechoslovakia ceased to exist as a separate entity and its territory became two independent nations, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Jewish communities of the various regions hence differed substantially in their demographic, economic, and cultural aspects, with influences of assimilation to the Czech and German cultures prevailing in the west, and the Hungarian in conjunction with the traditional Orthodox Jewish way of life in the east. top
    Demographic Structure
In the western part of Czechoslovakia Jewish life was mainly regulated by Austrian legislation (of 1890) and in the eastern areas by Hungarian (of 1870). The communal leadership was initially predominantly assimilationist-oriented to German, Hungarian, or Czech culture.

A.D. 623 - King Samo's Slavic Empire. Slovakia is the core part of the Empire.
    - The first Christian church and school built in the Carpathian basin (Central Europe) on Prince Pribina's Nitra (Nitra and Danube rivers region) Slovak Principality.
    - Prince Mojmír I, Slovak ruler of Moravia river region, ousted Prince Pribina, and joined the Principalities into one kingdom. Some historians call this Slovak kingdom Moravian kingdom.
    - Educated King Rastislav, who replaced Mojmír I, believed that his people should be educated in their own Slovak language. He aimed to be independent of German political influence. He invited highly educated brothers from the Easter Roman Empire (Byzantium): Constantine-Cyril, called Philosopher, and Methodius, a lawyer, who arrived in A.D. 863. Constantine created the first Slovak (and Slavic) alphabet called Hlaholika. Constantine-Cyril, together with the Slovak scholars translated Bible, the holy liturgy and the law books from Greek into Slovak language.
