Poll Question The following question will help policy leaders understand if Americans truly realize what "designated wilderness" means. It is important to understand the designation because 104 million acres of land is designated wilderness and that equates to the size of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania combined. By any measure, 104 million acres is a lot of property.
When land is designated "wilderness" there are strict use standards that are imposed. Do you know what actions are prohibited and which actions are allowed on public land that has been designated "wilderness" by the US Congress? Yes No No Opinion View Results Safe Riders! Information Snowmobiling Fuels Canadian Economy Back to Feature Stories Snowmobilers aren't a presence just on Canadian trails and snowy landscapes-they play a big role in the country's economy. For proof, one need only consider a study of Quebec snowmobiling performed recently by Zins Beauchesne et associés for the Fédération des clubs de motoneigistes du Quebec (FCMQ).
Almost one Quebec resident in ten owns a snowmobile, and even more call themselves snowmobilers, riding on friends' or rental machines. In all, almost a million Quebec snowmobilers live in half that many households. The study, though, focused only on the 84,000 people who ride groomed trails and belong to FCMQ.

Backpacking Bicycling Boating Camping ... Vermont State Parks Bicycling: This is a great way to enjoy Vermont during the warmer months, but the visitor will find cycling here quite different from back home and should prepare ahead. Touring and Mountain Biking are the most popular forms of biking in Vermont, but are not for the faint-of-heart or the ill-equipped. There are also recreational paths and trails for those of us who prefer peddling along a shoreline or on flatter terrain. Our famed Green Mountain National Forest is a great place for Mountain Biking, and you can do so on any of the Forest Roads such as the 14 mile Forest Road #10 which runs between Danby and Landgrove. You can obtain a detailed map of these Forest Roads from the Green Mountain National Forest Ranger District Office covering the area of interest to you. The more experienced, well-equipped, and hearty may choose to cross the Green Mountains on one of the Gap Roads . Don't attempt this your first time out! Please note that under no circumstances are you permitted to bicycle on the hiking trails within the National Forest.

HOME PAGE WEB CAM!!! BUILDING WITH LOGS CAMPGROUNDS ... FREE CLASSIFIEDS Recreational Opportunities Three National Parks and one National Monument are adjacent to the Forest. The scenic beauty for which these areas were set aside prevails over much of the Forest. Red sandstone formations of Red Canyon rival those of Bryce Canyon National Park. Hells Backbone Bridge and the view into Death Hollow are breathtaking. From the top of Powell Point, it is possible to see for miles into three different states. Boulder Mountain and the many different lakes provide opportunities for hiking, fishing, and viewing outstanding scenery.
Recreational opportunities on the Forest are highly diversified. Visitors may enjoy camping, hunting, viewing scenery, hiking, horseback riding, and fishing in very primitive settings away from the sight and sounds of motorized vehicles. Others, who prefer more developed areas and less primitive conditions, may enjoy vehicle-based activities such as camping, picnicking, resort lodging, recreation residence, sledding, skiing, hunting, gathering forest products, viewing interpretive exhibits, hiking, viewing scenery, driving for pleasure, snowmobiling, biking, horseback riding, canoeing, sailing, swimming, water skiing, and fishing.
Wilderness: The Forest has 83,000 acres of wilderness in three areas: Pine Valley, Box-Death Hollow, and Ashdown Gorge. Pine Valley and Ashdown Gorge offer opportunities for solitude, horseback riding, and hiking. Box-Death Hollow offers opportunities for solitude and hiking, but the terrain is much too rough for horses.

Many involved in the "heat of the conflict" act as if this is the first time Recreational Conflict has ever occurred. They forget that as children they fought others for the use of a favorite toy. They also forget many similar Recreational Conflicts (Bikers vs. Hikers) and even several in their own field (water skiers vs. fishermen, motor boats vs. canoes). We will now provide brief discussion of several research papers on RC. A full listing of these and other resources is listed in the Bibliography

    Snowmobile Trails
There are more than 25,000 miles of top-quality trails that link every corner of the state. The trails are well marked and methodically groomed by hundreds of snowmobile clubs. For a statewide view of major interconnected trails, the Wisconsin Department of Tourism (800-432-TRIP) produces a Snowmobile Trail Map . Using the standard State Highway Map as a subdued backdrop, this large fold-out map of Wisconsin shows the state's east-west and north-south Corridor Trails. Half the state is detailed on each side. It also includes trail contacts and snow condition phone numbers for each of the state's 72 counties. This Wisconsin Department of Tourism also produces the Wisconsin Snowmobile Guide , a link to Wisconsin's top 18 snowmobiling trails and tours. Each map includes trail mileage, parking areas, contacts for local information and snow conditions, and an extensive narrative describing on and off-route attractions. Visit the Wisconsin Department of Tourism's website for more information.

Are Wildlife or Snowmobiles Being Chased from America's Parks?

By Amanda Presley It is a cold winter morning. Motorists wait in traffic, their sputtering engines coughing a gray haze into the air. The smog has grown so prevalent, carbon monoxide threatens the health of employees issuing passes to the vehicles. Fresh air is pumped into the enclosed employee kiosks to alleviate this hazard. This is not a toll road. This is not New Yorknot even New Haven. This is the West Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. And the motorists? Some of the estimated 60,000 snowmobilers who enter Yellowstone each year. Snowmobiles and bison share an uneasy coexistence on a snow-covered road in Yellowstone National Park. The park hosts 60,000 snowmobilers every year.
© Jeff Henry Snowmobiles have become an increasingly popular form of recreational motorized vehicle in the last decadeboth in and out of national parks. Supporters, like Christine Jourdain, executive director of the American Council of Snowmobiling Association (ACSA), see them as "a critical mode of transportation in the winter." Sean Smith, public lands director of the Bluewater Network, a project of the Earth Island Institute, disagrees, arguing that snowmobiles impact air and water quality, wildlife and people's enjoyment of parks. Caught in the middle of this public land tug-of-war is the National Park Service, which has to weigh the importance of species and land protection against the case of snowmobiling "nature enthusiasts."

Detroit is one of the nation's largest cities, and its residents enjoy a multitude of recreational opportunities. The Detroit Social Club, where young people get together to go out or participate in basketball, volleyball and other sports leagues, offers great networking opportunities and chances to meet other young professionals in the area. And then there are the recreational activities that aren't so traditional, such as whirlyball, where you ride in bumper cars and your team competes against another team to get the ball to the goal. There are also metroparks throughout the Detroit metropolitan region, where one can get away from the city and enjoy the serenity of forests and bodies of water, as well as rent boats for sailing and experience the solitude of the lake. Click here to find out more about the Metropolitan Detroit region. Historical Flint
For a taste of yesteryear, Crossroads Village in Flint brings the 1860s back to life. The Village complex features homes, shops and entertainment found in Michigan towns during that period of time. Craftspeople reclaim the skills needed in 1860s culture - an authentic gristmill, cider mill and blacksmith shop are but a few of the 29 historic buildings to capture one's imagination.
