The 1985 team showed even more promise, compiling a 13-4-1 mark and qualifying for the ECAC Tournament, the first-ever post-season berth. Following a 9-6-2 record in 1986, the Knights soared to their first-ever - and only, to date - NCAA Tournament berth in 1987, when they went 12-6. Despite losing 1-0 to Connecticut in the first round, the squad had made the transition from baby steps to adult stride. Following the triumph of 1987, the squad suffered through an 8-9-3 season in 1988. The disappointment faced by that young 1988 team proved to be a harbinger of great things to come for the next few years.

But for a program to reach this level of national recognition, it has to win. It has to win matches against other top teams, it has to win conference matches and it has to win in the post-season. It is that simple. You can have all the bells and whistles you like, but it comes down to winning.

    History of Rollins College Soccer

How Rollins College Soccer got started: Excerpts from a story told by Hugh F. McKean ’30, former president of Rollins College, at the Sports Hall of Fame Breakfast, March 16, 1985 McKean served as coach of the soccer team during their initial 1956 season.
The Tars finished with a 0-2-3 record.
I arrived at Rollins to find that the College, among other things, didn’t have a fall sport. My predecessor had eliminated football, and I had no quarrel with that, but I did feel it was important for college to start out in the right way. In my opinion, sports are a necessary ingredient in a community that is supposed to show students how to make life a good experience. The atmosphere of the community has to be positive…it has to be right…. So here I was with a college that to me was starting off wrong. The spirit wasn’t right. We couldn’t bring football back because it was too expensive and it just wasn’t practical. I had seen one soccer game in Calcutta, India—they were playing in their bare feet…. I began to think about soccer and the possibility of starting up the sport at Rollins. I approached Jack McDowall, who had been our football coach, and said, “Jack, here’s a chance for you to have a new career. Let’s start soccer at Rollins, and you can coach it.” And he said, “Hugh, the boys won’t come out.” And I said, “Sure they will. They’d rather play soccer than do nothing in the fall.” And of course you don’t offer a sport just for the students who play it; you offer a sport for the college—so that the atmosphere will be right.

Coach Captains Roster Schedule ... Haverford Home Page History With more than 700 all-time wins, Haverford annually vies with the University of San Francisco for the most victories by a college men's soccer program. The oldest organized college soccer team in the nation, the Fords' rich tradition began a century ago when Richard Gummere '02 entered a club from the college in a local league. The soccer program soon gained national prominence when Haverford defeated Harvard University, 1-0, in the first modern-day intercollegiate soccer match on April 1, 1905. The Crimson's team had been started by Haverfordians who went to Cambridge for graduate school. Haverford was one of the top teams in the nation in the first half of the century, often winning the national title over an essentially Ivy League schedule. The 1945 team was undefeated. The soccer squad was a regional power in the 1950's under its great Scottish mentor, U.S. Olympic coach and Soccer Hall of Famer Jimmy Mills. As late as 1960, two Fords, Harold Taylor and Gyula Kovacsics, both '61, were named to a first-team All-American eleven that included players from major universities. In the mid-'70's, Haverford became a frequent NCAA tournament qualifier and won the Middle Atlantic Conference Southern Division five times between 1976 and '82 under coach Dave Felsen '66, now headmaster at Friends Central School near Philadelphia, and Stanley "Skip" Jarocki '69.

Coach Captains Roster Schedule ... Haverford Home Page History With the century-long success of soccer at Haverford, it was not surprising that when women's soccer began at the college in the mid-'80s, it found fertile soil and took root quickly. Swift progress was made from a combined club with Bryn Mawr, to an all-Haverford club and then to HC's first varsity in 1985. One member of that first varsity who earned all-league status was Wendy Smith '87 who has returned as head coach of the program. Smith's teams have been outstanding in the Centennial Conference. In 2001, senior midfielder Liz Young was named to the Third Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region, after earning First Team All-Centennial Conference honors. Young joined the ranks of other Fords who have received all-region recognition, including Jessica Rosen '96 (2nd team 1995), Amanda Salter '98 (3rd team 1997), and Courtney Nolan '99 (3rd team both 1998 and 1999). The schedule now includes non-league national and regional powers and an annual October fall break trip. The Fords visit Florida to play Rollins College and Florida Southern University in 2002 after recent trips to Chicago, New England, Virginia, Atlanta, Texas, North Carolina and metropolitan New York.

A few colleges played club or intramural women's soccer as far back as the 1920s. By the 1950's, a large youth soccer movement had developed, and large numbers of girls participated. A law passed in 1972, often called 'Title IX', said that no school could receive federal funds if that school discriminated against women. Though largely ignored at first, Title IX would later become the driving force behind an explosive growth of women's college soccer. The first varsity women's soccer program was at Brown University in 1977. The first 'national' championship was in 1980. In 1981, a national championship was held by the AIAW (Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women). The first NCAA women's soccer championship was held in 1982. Each year since 1981, a dozen or so new Division I women's teams have been added. And Divisions II and III, the NAIA, and the junior colleges have all experienced dramatic growth. Thanks, in part, to Title IX, women's college soccer is boooming . It's the fastest growing intercollegiate sport (men's or women's). It now ranks as one of the most popular intercollegiate sports for women. The level of play has improved dramatically, as has the competition.

The History of Soccer The modern form of soccer originated in England in the early 1830's. The sport grew among working-class communities and was seen as a way of keeping young and energetic kids out of trouble at home and in the school; they could let off steam and learn the values of teamwork (rampant individualism was considered a problem at the time). The first football clubs were established in Sheffield in 1857, and soon they had enough to establish their own Football Association in 1867. Sheffield FA played London FA in 1861, one of the first regional matches. and eventually the need for a unified set of rules became obvious. This group attempted to establish a series of rules which would please everyone, but they couldn't resolve issues such as use of hands, allowing hacking of opponents, etc. Many supporters of these elements (considered more "manly") eventually withdrew and formed the Rugby Football Union, and the FA established rules more similar to the modern game.

The History of Soccer When soccer first started in the United States, it was played primarily by schoolboy and college teams, and was largely an upper-class game. The Oneida soccer club, formed in Boston in 1862 is often cited as the first soccer club to consist of a regular roster of players, as opposed to the pick-up games commonly played at the time. It consisted of a group of Boston secondary school students from fairly elite public schools in the area (Boston Latin, Boston English, etc.). This club would play matches against pickup teams throughout the Boston collegiate community and went undefeated, and unscored upon during their entire four year existence. Apparently, teamwork, and familiarity with teammates was a significant factor in winning, and this was not lost on the public. The Oneida Football Club was the first soccer club anywhere outside of England, even predating the formation of Scottish teams. Clubs soon spread to other collegiate communities.
