History
Soccer was supposed to be on the program for the first modern Olympics in 1896, but it was cancelled because no teams entered, although some players showed up. The sport officially entered the Olympics in 1900 and it's been on the program ever since. The Olympic stand against professionalism led directly to the creation of soccer's World Cup tournament. After several countries withdrew from the 1928 Olympic tournament because their professionals weren't allowed to play, the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) decided to hold its own quadrennial world championship, beginning in 1929. In 1984, the International Olympic Committee decided to allow professionals to compete, but only if they hadn't taken part in World Cup play, which still left out most of the world's best players. The rule was amended in 1992 to allow professional players under 23 years of age in the Olympics. Since 1996, each team has been allowed to have three professional players over 22. Women's soccer was added to the Olympic program in 1996.

Olympic History: Soccer (Football)
Known everywhere outside of the United States as football, soccer is the most popular sport in the world and is played on virtually every corner of the planet. The sport was introduced in America as early as 1620, when the Pilgrims were known to play a form of soccer on the coast of Massachusetts. In 1884, The American Football Association was formed to organize the different enclaves in the eastern part of the country to maintain the uniformity of the game and to try to popularize the sport in the United States. Soon after, the United States and Canada played a game a year against each other in the late 1800s, representing the first international competition in soccer outside of Great Britain.

Latest: Tuesday September 19, 2000 04:58 PM U.S. soccer head coach Clive Charles (left) directs his team from the bench during the 3-1 win over Kuwait. AP MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - The weather was perfect for football. American football, that is. Maybe that's why the Americans were able to make history. On a chilly, rainy evening that felt nothing like a Summer Olympics, the U.S. men's team advanced out of the first round of an Olympic soccer tournament for the first time, beating Kuwait 3-1 Tuesday. Danny Califf scored in the 40th minute, Chris Albright in the 63rd and Landon Donovan in the 89th as the Americans dominated their Middle East opponents, who no doubt were more used to sand and hot sun than the slippery, bone-chilling conditions at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Substitute Bader Najem scored for Kuwait in the 83rd.

Santa Clara graduate Brandi Chastain enters her eighth season as assistant coach. A two-time All-American, Chastain played a major role on the Broncos' 1989 and 1990 national semifinal teams. She then went on to international fame by helping the U.S. National Team win the inaugural Women's World Cup, bring home the first-ever Olympic women's soccer gold medal and capture the 1999 Women's World Cup. Most recently, Chastain was a part of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, bringing home a silver medal with senior Bronco defender Danielle Slaton. After scoring 15 goals and being named All-America at California in 1986, the San Jose native transferred to Merritt College in 1988 and then to Santa Clara for the following season. In 1989, she led the team to its first-ever post-season appearance, scoring 10 goals and leading the squad into the national semifinals and a final ranking of No. 3 in the nation. In 1990, she scored 22 goals and 50 points as the Broncos swept to an 18-1-1 record and the nation's top ranking. Chastain was named the ISAA National Collegiate Player of the Year, as she was among the nation's leading goal scorers. Santa Clara entered the national semifinals for the second consecutive year, this time as the nation's only undefeated squad, before falling to Connecticut. Chastain concluded her SCU career as the Broncos' third all-time leading goal scorer. She currently ranks seventh on the all-time Santa Clara list.

American folklore asserts that Pilgrim Fathers, upon settling at Plymouth Rock, found American Indians along the Massachusetts coast playing a form of football. The Indians called it pasuckquakkohwog , which means "they gather to play ball with the foot." Many American colleges played football, but there was no intercollegiate competition. Rules were casual and often changed. The Oneidas of Boston, the first organized football (soccer) club in America, was formed by Gerritt Smith Miller. The Oneidas played under the experimental rules of Association Football and were undefeated from 1862-65. Princeton University and Rutgers University engaged in the first intercollegiate soccer match Nov. 6 in New Brunswick, N.J. Rutgers won the match 6-4. The game was more similar to soccer than American football.
