Did You Know? Only three countries in the history of the Summer Games have successfully defended a gold medal. The last time it happened was in 1968 (Uruguay). Men's soccer has appeared at the games every year since , while women's soccer is making its second appearance as a medal sport. What makes the men's soccer event unique from the World Cup tournament is a rule that restricts teams to players under 23 years old (with the exception of three older players), making the Olympics a showcase for the world's up-and-coming stars.

The Game
The basic objective of the game is for one team to force the ball by kicking it or propelling it with the chest or head into the opponent's goal. The goal mouth is 24 feet wide and eight feet high, spanned by a crossbar and backed by netting. One point is awarded for each goal scored. The winning team is the one with the highest number of points. The game is played in two 45-minute halves. Only two substitutions are permitted, per side, per game. If the two substitutions are used and a player is later injured, the team must play short. If regulation time ends in a tie, an overtime period may be played. If the teams remain tied at the conclusion of overtime, the game may be decided by a kicking contest in which each team has up to five unobstructed (except for the goalkeeper) attempts to put the ball in the opponent's goal.

However, more and more nations had adopted professionalism into the amateur game and this was apparent at the Paris Olympics in 1924, when the very "professional" Uruguay team became the first South American nation to win the title. FIFA duly announced its plan to run its own competition, open to all affiliated countries. They did not immediately give name to the competition, but the world's press were quick to give it their own title. "World Cup", "World Soccer Championship" and "La Coupe de Monde" were favourite descriptions. Another was the "Jules Rimet Cup". Eventually that was how the World Cup officially became known, thus honouring the man who had done so much for FIFA in drumming up support amongst member nations.

Real easy to do and remember for those who don't want complicated practices...good book! Soccer practice made simple I used to think soccer didn't require much strategy...you either had the skill or you didn't. The drills in this book helped me overcome my lack of skill. It also made me appreciate the sport a lot better. I recommend this to parents who have kids playing soccer and who themselves have very little background in soccer like me. These drills were a great way for me to get involved with my daughter's love for soccer. Now, I feel like I am participating in the sport with her.

The history of soccer shows that so many ancient cultures played a sport similar to modern soccer that no one can say with any certainty when or where soccer began. But it is known that the earlier varieties of what later became soccer were played almost 3000 years ago.
History of Soccer China and Japan
One of the oldest forms of soccer in which players kicked a ball on a small field has been traced as far back as 1004 B.C. in Japan. the Munich Ethnological Museum in Germany has a Chinese text from approximately 50 B.C. that mentions games very similar to soccer that were played between teams from China and Japan. The Chinese kicked a leather ball (filled with hair) and it is known for sure that a soccer game was played in 611 A.D. in the ancient Japanese capital Kyoto.

The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) is responsible for the development of U.S. national teams which compete in international events throughout the world. The USSF currently fields national teams at Under 17, Under 20, Olympic (Under 23), Pan-American, and World Cup levels for men and Under 16, Under 18, Under 20, Olympic and World Cup levels for women. The players for all these national teams are identified and developed via the Olympic Development Program (ODP) or as it is also known, the State Select Program (SSP). In 1979 the program expanded, the organization became more efficient and multi-year plans were developed. State Associations were encouraged to develop programs which supported and worked in tandem with National and Regional programs. At the beginning of 1982 a formalized program for girls was created, with the addition of a full committee (one member from each Region). From 1982 until the present, international events for youth national teams have increased substantially and the USYSA Olympic Development Program has kept pace by instituting trials and player pools for five

While ancient historians kept records of such conspicuous events as wars and religious movements, they apparently had little interest in preserving the various origins of soccer or other sports, so no one can say how soccer seems to have spread from Asia to Europe. But when the game finally did get to England, it had acquired a bad enough reputation among British royalty that the government sometimes passed laws against soccer.
