SYDNEY ROUNDUP: Jones keeps rolling, Norway wins soccer gold
By JOHN AFFLECK, Associated Press Writer
SYDNEY, Australia (September 28, 2000 9:52 a.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com ) - Olympic history, the sequel.
A happy tale for Marion Jones, winner of the second track and field gold of the unprecedented five she's chasing. A sad story for the defending champion U.S. women's soccer team - it lost 3-2 in overtime to Norway, squandering a chance to win its second straight gold. Jones pulled away from the world's best sprinters in Thursday's 200-meter final like she was turbocharged. Under intense scrutiny both because of her quest for five track golds at one Summer Games - something no woman has ever achieved - and for the revelation that her shot-putter husband tested positive for steroids, Jones seemed completely at ease as she sped to the finish line in 21.84 seconds. She stopped to kiss and hug husband C.J. Hunter, watching from the stands, after the race. Hunter has denied he knowingly took drugs to improve his performance.

    History of Handball
The origins of Handball is a subject of great debate. One view is that it was invented in Germany, back in the late 19th century (the first match was alleged to be played around 1895 in Germany), as an outdoor sport to keep soccer players fit during the summer months. Outdoor Handball was an 11-a-side game, played on virtually a full-size turf soccer ground with soccer goals. It was mainly played with soccer rules, except it was played with the hands and kicking the ball was illegal rather than the other way round. However, there are records of handball-style games going back to antiquity. The sport was depicted on a tombstone carving in Athens dated at 600BC. The first match of the modern era officially was recorded on 29 October 1917 in Berlin, Germany. Outdoor Handball had its only Olympic Games appearance in the XIth Olympiad (1936 Berlin Games). The first international match recorded was played on 3 September 1925 with Germany defeating Austria, 6:3. The sports international governing body, was first formed in 1928 as the Federation Internationale Handball Amateur, and tooks its current name in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1946 as the International Handball Federation (IHF). The IHF's first president was Avery Brundage - and American who went on to become president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Indoor Handball Handball has always been a sport dominated by the European nations. In its formative years as an outdoor game, Germany, Austria and Denmark dominated in the international sphere, even though not many other nations outside of Europe were playing the game.

Although football as we know it was born in England, the ancient origins of some sort of game played with a ball go further back than we could possibly imagine; with the Aztecs and the Chinese playing diverse competitions based on the control of a ball with the feet. In the centuries that followed the Roman Empire, there existed rough and ready, rowdy informal ball-games of little importance and with virtually no organization, but they never died out, and with the eventual decline of blood sports, their moment had arrived.
used an ovoid ball; its shape reflecting the early use of inflated bladders, while the other two (Association Football and Gaelic Football) employed a spherical ball. Six of the seven variants followed the original Rugby style in allowing the ball to be handled. Only one rejected this: Association Football, and it is this form, the soccer game, that has come to dominate the world. Clearly, soccer has special qualities that the other variants lack. CHICAGO (Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000) - U.S. Women's National Team head coach April Heinrichs today named the 18 players who will represent the United States in the women's soccer competition of the 2000 Olympics Games in Australia.
There were no major surprises among the selections as 15 members of the 1999 Women's World Cup championship team were chosen. The three players who will be competing in their first world championship event are 22-year-old goalkeeper Siri Mullinix, 22-year-old midfielder Nikki Serlenga, and defender Danielle Slaton, at 20 years of age, the youngest player on the squad. The team has an average age of 25.1 years.
    ELEVEN GOLD MEDALISTS
Of the 15 Women's World Cup veterans, 11 were on the team that won the Olympic gold medal in 1996 at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga., with a 2-1 victory over China, and 10 players that started that match will go to Australia. The U.S. women have compiled a record of 20-4-5 in 2000 as forty-two players participated in full international matches this year, making the selection process long and challenging.

Indiana University soccer is synonymous with tradition and excellence.
In their third decade of varsity competition, the Hoosiers are guided by five-time National Coach of the Year Jerry Yeagley. In 29 years, Yeagley has taken a program from the ground floor stages and built it into one of the strongest and most respected in the United States. In those 28 seasons, Indiana owns more wins, has appeared in more College Cups and has a higher winning percentage in both regular season and post-season play than any other school in Division I soccer.
    Yeagley has guided the Hoosiers to five NCAA Championships (1982, '83, '88, '98, '99), 15 College Cup appearances (1976, '78, '80, '82, '83, '84, '88, '89, '91, '94, '97, '98, '99, '00, '01), and in the process, has helped Indiana soccer hold the reputation of a program possessing a great deal of class and integrity.

The Olympic tournament had been the only tournament so far with world wide participation, but that was for amateurs only. However, more and more nations had adopted professionalism and "shamateurism" was creeping into the amateur game. This was apparent at the Paris Olympics in 1924, when the very "professional" Uruguay team became the first South American nation to win the title. FIFA duly announced its plan to run its own competition, open to all affiliated countries. They did not immediately give name to the competition, but the world's press were quick to give it their own title. "World Cup", "World Soccer Championship" and "La Coupe de Monde" were favourite descriptions. Another was the "Jules Rimet Cup". Eventually that was how the World Cup officially became known, thus honouring the man who had done so much for FIFA in drumming up support amongst member nations.

The locals came pushing prams and walking their dogs along with a contingent of international press to see just what all the fuss was about. The fuss was the inaugural gathering of a 2000 piece band, the biggest marching band in Olympic history, on a soccer oval at Charles Sturt University in the regional NSW city of Bathurst. The gathering marked the first rehearsal of the much awaited Sydney 2000 Olympic Band a main part of producer Ric Birch's vision spectacular for the September 15 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. For five days the Australian and international band contingents have been running through the drills, perfecting their movements in anticipation of the arrival of the US and Japanese groups that would effectively double their size and sound. In less than two weeks, with significant contingents from Australia and the United States and smaller groups representing 19 other countries, these musicians will have to march into Stadium Australia as one to perform before a world wide audience of four billion. Addressing his band as a whole, for the first time, artistic director Barry Spanier said the group should feel proud they were making musical history.

    History

The soccer playing women and girls celebrated their jubilee in 1995: After 25 years the DFB Bundestag (Assembly) decided to lift the ban on women's soccer which had been imposed in 1955, and signalled green light for a remarkable development, at the top of which stands the national team After 1989, 1991 and 1995 the German team defeated Italy 2-0 in the final in Oslo on July 12, 1997, and was thus winning the European championship for the fourth time. In the world cup in 1995, the DFB team was runner-up. In the Stockholm final, the Norwegian team achieved a 2-0 victory. This world cup silver was crowned by the direct qualification for the Olympic soccer tournament in Atlanta 1996. Women’s soccer: once smiled on - had gone Olympic. And in the Olymic Tournament in Sydney 2000 the German women´s football team celebrated a great success: they won the bronce medal. There are two names standing for success and progress. One is Gero Bisanz who coached the DFB women since their international debut in 1982, until the Olympics in 1996 where, unfortunately, no medal was won. He was followed by Tina Theune-Meyer. Her assistant Silvia Neid has also been with the team from the very beginning and wore the DFB jersey 111 times. Nowadays it is quite a normal thing for girls and women to play soccer, while not long ago, this kind of leisure activity had been disapproved of. The way to public acceptance has been long and difficult. The days when the image of fairground entertainment had been affixed to women's soccer are over. What actually counts is the mere pleasure in soccer and a serious endeavour to play it as perfectly as possible, linked with the desire to match ones strengths and faculties by way of sports.
