Son Ki-jong, a Korean athlete who won a gold medal at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin while participating as a Japanese team member, died Friday in Seoul as a result of kidney failure. He was 90. Mainichi Shimbun Son, center, was the first Korean to win an Olympic gold but had to compete in Japanese colors because of Tokyo's colonial rule.
Son was born in Pyongan, in present-day North Korea, in May 1912. He attended a high school in Seoul and soon took an interest in marathon running. In 1936, Son traveled to Berlin to compete in the Olympic Games, but because Korea was under Japanese colonial rule at the time, he competed, along with fellow countryman Nam Sung-ryong as a representative of the Japanese team. Son took the gold medal, breaking the Olympic record in a time of 2 hours, 29 minutes and 19 seconds, and became a hero in both Korea and Japan. He was the first Korean to win a gold medal, but because he was representing the Japanese team at the time, the medal was never regarded as a Korean one right up to the time of his death.

Sync FanaticZone to your Palm Pilot Web posted Friday, August 11, 2000 Former Gator makes Olympic history Story from FanaticZone.com wire services By PAUL NEWBERRY The Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS - Jenny Thompson and former Florida Gator Dara Torres flapped toward the finish line with almost perfect synchronization, two of America's greatest swimmers chasing another taste of Olympic glory. Thompson reached the wall a split-second before Torres to win a stirring 100-meter breaststroke at the U.S. trials Thursday night. But Torres was a winner, too, becoming the first American swimmer to qualify for four Olympics. "This is a pretty sweet victory," Thompson said. "There's a lot of pressure. People think this just comes to me, but it's not as easy as one might think." Thompson, a five-time gold medalist, shook off memories of a poor performance at the 1996 trials to earn her third trip to the Olympics in 57.78 seconds. Torres, swimming right beside Thompson, was virtually stroke-for-stroke over the final 25 meters, falling just short in 57.86. The 33-year-old Torres, who returned to swimming last year after a seven-year retirement spent dabbling in modeling and infomercial work, held a slight lead in the women's race at the turn. Thompson caught up on the return trip and barely touched first.

Chicago's Soccer History
By Dave Litterer spectrum@sover.net Chicago is been one of the half-dozen historical soccer strongholds in the United States, with roots extending back to the late 1800's. Soccer first came to Chicago, as it did many other cities, with the waves of European immigrants who flocked to the major industrial cities, bringing their love of the game with them. With the establishment of the National Soccer League of Chicago in 1920, the city's position as a major soccer region was secure; for decades, the NSL was one of the "big four" of the amateur leagues, with numerous teams winning the National Challenge Cup, as well as sending players to the national team. In more recent years, Chicago was long represented in the North American League by the successful Chicago Sting and currently fans root for the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer. The amateur league still remains one of the strongest in the country, and Chicago is currently home to the United States Soccer Federation.
The first years
The first official match played under Association Rules in Chicago was played between the newly organized sides of the Pullman Car Works and the Original Wanderers, in 1893. Pullman would go on to become a powerhouse in the early 20th century. Not long after this inaugural match, Soccer was featured at the Columbian Exposition, in a event dubbed a "world championship", which culminated in a match between Chicago Braidwood and a club from Toronto. The success of these early neighborhood teams culminated in the founding of the Association Football League in 1904 with C. W. Critchley as the first President. Teams included the Wanderers, Calumet, Douglas Park, Hyde Park Blues, Hyde Park Grays, and Lake Shores. The Pullmans joined soon after, and immediately became the class team of the league, despite being the only team without an enclosed field. That was remedied within a few years.
