General Information Social Sciences for the thinking professional Today's trend towards a narrowly focused training of students produces inflexible graduates who cannot understand the local and global societies of today, and who will not be able to adapt to changes or challenges. "The best Social Sciences degrees are there to teach students how to think critically, argue, and how to analyse the world around them with a critical eye". With a training in the School of Social Sciences, graduates will not only gain the necessary skills to enter a wide variety of careers and employment opportunities, but they will become active members of society, "not passive cogs in the wheels of society". Society is constantly changing and now more rapidly than ever, and students need to be able to adapt and change to new challenges. A Bachelor of Arts degree in the School of Social Sciences enables lawyers, business people, professionals, doctors, journalists, researchers, CEOs, human resource managers, administrators, development experts - anyone to effectively understand and acquire skills that will be beneficial. History, International Relations, Philosophy, Political Studies, Religious Studies, Social Anthropology and Sociology all can help to train experts to be critical, flexible, and focused.

Including Historic Places in the Social Studies Curriculum. ERIC Digest.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC Places have powerful stories to tell. They speak through relationships to their settings, their plan and design, their building materials, their atmosphere and ambience, their furniture, and other objects they contain. They can evoke the ghosts of the people who once lived and worked there. These places provide physical evidence of how broad currents of history affect even small communities. Supplemented with primary or secondary written and visual materials, they also teach such skills as observation, working with maps, interpreting visual evidence, evaluating bias, analysis, comparison and contrast, and problem-solving. Teaching with Historic Places, a program administered by the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places, offers a variety of ways to share this "power of place" with students across the nation. At the heart of the program is a series of more than 50 classroom-ready lesson plans based on historic places listed in the National Register. These lessons allow teachers to use historic places to bring the new standards in geography, history, and social studies into their classrooms.

Information for Teachers General Overview
This web activity, recommended for grades 5 and up, is designed to teach both content and process.
The content areas addressed in this activity are the science of conservation and the history of the Hispanic American tradition of making santos Santos are painted woodcarvings of saints in the Catholic Church. Conservators use scientific tools and procedures such as xeroradiography and microscopy to analyze objects. The science behind these tools and procedures is explained in this web activity. What santos are, how they are made, and the importance of their stories can be also discovered. Living santero s from both the New Mexican and Puerto Rican traditions are featured and speak about their work as santero s and the importance of these objects to their cultures. An exercise on iconography enables students to understand the importance of symbols in this tradition. The process addressed is that used by a conservator as he/she learns about an object in order to care for it properly and preserve it. Conservators need to know as much as possible about how something was made, what it was made of, why it was made, and who made it. To learn this information, they often consult historians, artists, and other experts. They follow the scientific process as they form hypotheses and consult various sources of evidence to confirm or disprove their hypotheses. The application of scientific information to answer questions is also addressed in this web activity.
