Research As teachers we are always looking for more effective ways to teach and to help students learn. We talk to each other to get new ideas, share our most effective lessons, and attend professional development opportunities to sharpen our teaching strategies. Research in learning and teaching social studies is another source of information to help us be better teachers. It is difficult for the busy teacher to keep pace with research findings. Contained here is a summary of a few issues that have emerged from recent research and suggestions based on research which you can incorporate into your teaching.

LEARNING WORLD GEOGRAPHY BY CRISIS
Once again, our U.S. school systems have failed their basic world geography exam. Most students knew relatively little about Afghanistan and its neighbors prior to Sept. 11. The reason we know so little world geography is a complicated morass of failed education policies and legislative mandates.
The basic problem is that even with the best intentions, teachers can only teach what they know and what state legislatures mandate. Generations of Americans have passed through schools that have had little or no geography in their curriculums. Regardless of teachers' interests in world geography, most find themselves trapped into teaching the same geography-less curriculums year after year. How can teachers teach geography if it is not a significant part of the curriculum?
Gilbert Grovesnor, former president of the National Geographic Society, had it right 15 years ago when he initiated the State Geographic Alliance Program. Funded by a $30 million endowment, the Alliance Program helps university faculty in each state to train cadres of "Master Teachers" who participate in summer institutes. These teachers, in turn, provide in-service workshops for other teachers across the states, thus "trickling down" geography to other teachers to use in the classroom.

General Studies
Courses in the LSA Bulletin designated Humanities (HU or LR) meet the humanities requirement and may be listed in a variety of programs and departments. This is true, as well, for courses meeting the natural science (NS) and social science (SS) requirement. Courses in each area must be chosen from at least two different departments.
The following School of Education requirements can be fulfilled through the cross-disciplinary general studies requirements discussed above:
  • One course in introductory psychology (Psych 111 or 112 or the equivalent) is required. Psych 111 will count toward the social science core requirement but will not meet major and minor requirements in social studies. Psych 112 will count toward the natural science core requirement but will not meet major and minor requirements in the sciences.

III. GENERAL PRINCIPLES A. Non-Discrimination (art.2) 48. The Constitution of Japan states, in paragraph 1 of Article 14, that "All of the people... there shall be no discrimination... because of race, creed, sex, social status or family origin.," guaranteeing the equality of all of the people, including children, under the law. Under this principle "the equality under the law," all forms of discrimination against children by public authorities are prohibited. 49. In accordance with the provision of the Constitution, the Child Welfare Law states that "the life of each and every child shall equally be guaranteed and protected." In addition, all forms of discrimination against children by public authorities are also prohibited under stipulations of other national laws such as the provisions of Article 2 of the Public Assistance Law (which provides for non-discriminatory, equal protection), Article 3 of the Fundamental Law for Measures for Mentally and Physically Handicapped Persons (guaranteeing the equal treatment of all disabled persons) and paragraph 1 of Article 3 of the Fundamental Law of Education (which prescribes equal opportunity of education). 51. In cases where discrimination between individuals is found, the civil liberties organs of the Ministry of Justice are to promptly implement pertinent measures for remedy. In private-law, if such an act is found to be unlawful under the Civil Code, the person who performed the act will be held liable for damages. In cases where the discriminatory act runs contrary to public policy or good morals as referred to in Article 90 of the Civil Code, which is a provision restricting personal autonomy in general, the act may be null and void. If the discriminatory act infringes penal statutes, the offender will be punished.

A Problem-Posing Approach Division of Teacher Education, San Diego State University Professor: Rich Gibson, Ph.D. E-mail: rgibson@pipeline.com Web Page: http://www.pipeline.com/~rgibson Units: Three Ten Principles 1.Methods and substance are inseparable; one creates and recreates, or undermines, the other. 2.An educator's goals should be clearly kept in mind, with all their social and political implications. 3. An educator must be able to locate her/himself within the existing social conditions, and to make courageous choices about whose interests will be served by curricula and pedagogy. The educator must be aware of his/her theoretical framework (philosophy, world-view) and, when possible, make it available to students for critique. 4. Methods should reflect an intersection of the community, the student, and the educator. 5. Methods are therefore idiosyncratic, but in general should be interrogative, evidence-seeking, provocative, critical yet friendly, linked to the rational social and individual processes of gaining and testing knowledge. Imagination is thus connected to the concrete and the theoretical. 6. Emphasis on the concrete, on practice, on the immediate, should not overwhelm the necessity of theory. Theory sets up what is observed. Theory is refined by tests in social practice-which only deepen theory and offer more theoretical problems. Exposing the interaction of theory and practice is vital in every learning situation. It is this process that moves knowledge from superficial appearance to essence.

Our second graders enjoy learning about the original peoples of the world. We study the regional areas of the United States and the people that first inhabited these areas. We also travel to Alaska and the Arctic Circle and then to the Land Down Under. When we learn about Alaska and Australia we also find out about the geography and the wildlife there. We have discovered that each of these original peoples lived very similar lives, and they had similar beliefs. They cherished the earth and what it gave them; and they were closely connected to their families. I*EARN First People's Project
