Northern Arizona University "Grand Challenges: Preparing for the Technological Tipping Point" by Bull, Bull, Garofalo, and Harris (2002) presented a strong message about the coming age of ubiquitous computing and provided concrete evidence of the necessity for educators to be ready for this new era. The case for the inevitable explosion of computing resources in the schools is clearly made, as well as the challenges that may lie in this technological wake. The article provided concrete examples of educational amplifiers and the dangers of entrenchment, and acknowledged the didactic digital divide that can occur based upon the preparation of teachers. What the article did not address is a perhaps the greatest challenge to the successful accommodation of technological resources. For ubiquitous computing to positively impact teaching and learning, a new vision of teaching and learning—a pedagogical paradigm shift—is needed. The history of reform in science education over the last 200 years is fairly dismal—our biggest "inventions" have been structural: compulsory education, the creation of the junior high, and the movement away from "natural sciences" to the earth science-biology-chemistry-physics sequence so often seen in today's schools (DeBoer, 1991

STUDYING HISTORY
History plays a central role in general education for all undergraduate students. History stresses an understanding of changes that take place in society over time. Since we learn from experience, through history we can greatly broaden our learning through the experience of others, removed in time and distant in space from our immediate world. The study of history is as useful as it is fascinating. History majors develop an ability to communicate well, both orally and in writing, and the capacity to think clearly and analytically. History majors are encouraged to study abroad as part of their program. Whatever one's goals
Undergraduate Programs:
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Because history stresses change over time and provides the tools for comprehending better a rapidly changing world, many of those planning graduate work find history an excellent preparation for professional schools such as, law and business administration. For those planning a legal career, a strong background in Western institutions and values can be obtained in a variety of courses in the Department. Those planning a career in public school teaching should be aware that the Department's program has been officially approved under the Ryan Act for both the elementary (multiple-subject) and secondary (single-subject) credential programs which exempts graduates from the statewide examinations required in these fields. And, of course, a major in history prepares the student for graduate study in this field as well as a broad range of general careers in business, government work and foreign affairs that ask for written and verbal skills developed in the major.

Using Stories about Heroes To Teach Values. ERIC Digest.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC RECENT TRENDS IN VALUES EDUCATION There has been a renewal of concern during the 1990s about teaching and learning valuesstandards that everyone should have about what is good or bad. And leading educators have recommended stories about heroes as a main means of teaching and learning values. Teaching methods that stress only cognitive skills in the analysis and clarification of choices about values have fallen from favor. The current trend is against teaching neutrally about values. Rather, the trend is for teaching values in concert with methods of analysis and judgment that yield answers about right and wrong, better and worse concerning personal behavior and the common good (Leming 1996). Why and how should role models and heroes be used to teach values?

Preparing for a Career in Education
Education is recognized as one of the most important resources for individuals, as well as for society in general. High-quality schools and instruction, well-trained teachers, and leaders in education are indispensable elements in providing today's youth with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to attain a fulfilling future. UCI offers a variety of opportunities for students interested in preparing for a career in education, including an undergraduate minor in Educational Studies, subject matter preparation programs, teacher credentialing programs, and graduate degree programs in Educational Technology Leadership, Educational Administration, and Elementary and Secondary Education. In California, undergraduate students who wish to become teachers do not major in education. Rather, they pursue a bachelor's degree in a subject that interests them (usually one that they both enjoy and wish to teach), and later, on a postbaccalaureate basis, they complete courses prescribed for a credential program. For example, if you wish to teach math at the intermediate or senior high school level, it would be advisable to major in mathematics at UCI, with a specialization in Mathematics for High School Teaching. If on the other hand, you are interested in teaching at the elementary school level, you could choose any undergraduate major that you enjoy. Since elementary school teachers usually teach all general subjects, you should choose a major that offers a broad spectrum of courses.
