The Secondary Teaching Program combines course work in the liberal arts with professional education courses. Students earn a bachelor of science in education and social policy (BSEd) from the School of Education and Social Policy (SESP) as well as earning a recommendation for certification through entitlement for Secondary teaching (grades 6-12). Forty-five units of credit (or courses) are required for the degree. Illinois certification can be earned in a wide range of majors within the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences (WCAS), including art, English, history, economics with history, political science with history, sociology with history, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, French, German, Latin, or Spanish. Historians as Educators
Elementary Schools:
Secondary Schools:
There are more opportunities to teach history as a separate subject (rather than being a part of social studies) at the junior high and high school levels. Thus more history courses are required of a student majoring in secondary education. A broad background would be required to teach topics like world history, or Western Civilization.
Postsecondary Education: Community and Junior Colleges, Four-Year Colleges, and Universities
A history major will be good preparation for obtaining the advanced degrees (MA or PhD) required to teach at the postsecondary level.

T he Classics Project of the Center for the Liberal Arts wishes to serve both Latin teachers and those teachers of English, Social Studies, and Art who have a professional or personal interest in the classical world. We want all teachers to be able to teach in the most informed way possible the various elements of classical mythology, literature, art, and history already in their curricula. Our programs offer the basic historical and cultural information to orient the teachers and to give some in-depth information on topics or works treated in the school curricula, e.g., Sophocles' Antigone , Euripides' Medea , Homer's Odyssey , and the principles of Athenian democracy. We also attempt to provide some stimulating new material, whether it be new works of literature or a comparison of ancient democracy to modern

    The Point of School
I really hate school. What's the purpose anyway? to learn well fine I'll learn, but those silly teachers don't teach you in class. They tell you to go home and do it. We're there all day, 5 days a week, all year, but the teachers cant think of anything to actually teach us in school. They want us to be little, self-teaching, submissive kids that respond to their every word. Who cares about anyone Why bother to go to school anyway if all the teachers do is have staff meetings and just laugh about how young and naive the students are and how much money they're getting from embezzlement and totally. So what's the purpose of school? To do homework and get bullied by your teacher whenever they feel like it. Don't even think about learning or doing something in school. It all has to be done at home. Mark

We begin our editorship of the science section of the CITE journal with enthusiasm. The journal's editors have described its style and purpose as an unusual "scholarly adventure"—and we agree. From the first time we logged on we realized the unique opportunity for collaborative interactions and discussions about the role of technology in science teacher education. The single biggest draw for us was the emphasis on technology in context, technology in content, and technology as a tool for improving learning in science. In the following paragraphs we describe some recent experiences over the last two years that have influenced how we see ourselves as both science and technology educators. Those experiences convinced us that the CITE journal deserves to thrive.
