86. Welcome To TTU's Sociology Of Appalachia Website!
Information and links on regional identity, crafts, education, religion, food, economics, environment, music, storytelling, and festivals.

Images such as one provided by Harney continue to be common place depictions of Appalachia. We see these images on television through re-runs of such shows as the Beverly Hillbillies, in comic strips, and in popular movies. These depictions of Appalachia and its people are myths. The purpose of this website is to give a more realistic portrayal of Appalachia and its people. During the course of the 2000 Fall semester, the class agreed to do a oral history project on a community within our Appalachian region. Our class chose to do the project on the Free Hill(s) community. Free Hills was the first free black community within Tennessee. Our goal was to learn about the history of the community by interviewing those people that have lived there. We are now in the final stages of our project. We have completed our interviews and are now in the editing process. Thanks to WCTE of Cookeville for thier help with this process. If all goes well, part of the video will be on WCTE soon and will also be available in the TTU Library archives. Check back here for more information as it developes. Appalachian crafts are diverse and special. Inside

Links to other environmental pages Introduction "Environmental studies" is the overlap of many fields of study, such as biology, geology, policy studies and law, geography, religion, civil and chemical engineering, chemistry, economics, history, and sociology. All environmental education must be partly within a discipline, and partly interdisciplinary. The typical worker in environmental policy, planning, research, or management has professional training in one or two environmental fields, and works upon a few facets of a complex problem in collaboration with other experts. Students with well-formed goals toward specific environmental careers should look first at the departmental majors available at Bucknell to learn if one of them would be the best preparation for the career they have in mind. The department of geology, for example, offers both a bachelor of arts and a bachelor of science degree in environmental geology.

Introduction to the Department of Religious Studies
Welcome to the Department of Religious Studies at CSU, Chico. Religious Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines religious ideas, symbols, practices, and institutions from the perspectives of history, textual studies, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and other disciplines. Our program is cross-cultural and comparative, and highlights the complex relationship of religion to other areas of culture. In addition to courses exploring the development of all the major religious traditions of the world, we offer courses that probe the role of religion in ethics and law, gender constructs, literature, the visual arts, and a variety of contemporary social and political issues. The Department has grown from its establishment in 1974 to a Department of 13 active scholars working in many areas of the discipline. We offer programs of study leading to a BA or minor in Religious Studies, and a minor in Ethics. Browse our website for information on courses, faculty, on- and off-campus resources, and information about careers and graduate school in Religious Studies.

Sociology and Religion Information Profiles In doing human relations consulting, FosterServices , from Dr. Mark A. Foster, uses an applied sociology approach called clinical sociology or sociological practice . In other words, as a professional sociologist, I take what I know about people and apply it in ways which will benefit you! Unlike many sociologists, I have experience working inside an academic environment - as a college professor (specializing in the study of religions) and a college administrator - and outside the academy - as a clinical sociologist. My special areas of expertise include alternative religious movements ("cults"), Islám, and the Bahá'í Faith.
