At the Olympics, only women participate in this sport. Did You Know? United States second baseman Dot Richardson, who hit the game-winning home run in the gold medal final against China in 1996, is an orthopedic surgeon. Pitchers can throw fastballs that reach speeds between 65-74 mph. And considering the distance between home plate and the pitcher's mound is a third less than baseball, softball batters have generally the same split second baseball players have to make a decision.

Sync FanaticZone to your Palm Pilot Web posted Friday, August 11, 2000 Former Gator makes Olympic history Story from FanaticZone.com wire services By PAUL NEWBERRY The Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS - Jenny Thompson and former Florida Gator Dara Torres flapped toward the finish line with almost perfect synchronization, two of America's greatest swimmers chasing another taste of Olympic glory. Thompson reached the wall a split-second before Torres to win a stirring 100-meter breaststroke at the U.S. trials Thursday night. But Torres was a winner, too, becoming the first American swimmer to qualify for four Olympics. "This is a pretty sweet victory," Thompson said. "There's a lot of pressure. People think this just comes to me, but it's not as easy as one might think." Thompson, a five-time gold medalist, shook off memories of a poor performance at the 1996 trials to earn her third trip to the Olympics in 57.78 seconds. Torres, swimming right beside Thompson, was virtually stroke-for-stroke over the final 25 meters, falling just short in 57.86. The 33-year-old Torres, who returned to swimming last year after a seven-year retirement spent dabbling in modeling and infomercial work, held a slight lead in the women's race at the turn. Thompson caught up on the return trip and barely touched first.

Korzeniowski walks into Olympic history books
By STEVEN DOWNES
SYDNEY (September 28, 2000 11:00 p.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com ) - Poland's Robert Korzeniowski walked his way into the history books in Sydney on Friday morning, when he became the first man in Olympic history to win the 20km and 50km race walk double, retaining his title in the longest event on the athletics programme - another historic first. Latvia's Agars Fadejevs took silver, while Mexican Joel Sanchez finished with the bronze. Korzeniowski who took the event to a new level. The 32-year-old Krakow sports teacher won the 20km walk here last week in controversial style - when Mexico's Bernardo Segura was disqualified 11 minutes after he had crossed the line in the belief he had won the gold. But Friday's triumph was much more clear-cut. Korzeniowski finished in 3hr 42min 22sec, removing his sun glasses to reveal the sweat on his face in the baking Sydney sun.

Thursday, July 13, 2000 PROFILE: Carol Montgomery Montgomery ready to make Canadian Olympic history
By DONNA SPENCER
Canadian Press
Carol Montgomery's heart has always been in running.
She may be a medal threat in the women's Olympic triathlon in Sydney, but it's her 10,000-metre race on the track 11 days later that really has her pumped. "I don't have much chance of making the 10,000 final as a runner, but that's what I'm looking forward to almost more so than the triathlon," said the 34-year-old, who will be the first Canadian to compete in two different sports at the same Olympics.

Jun 05, 2002 MSU Phenom Named To One Of Two National Teams
STARKVILLE, Miss. Former Mississippi State softball standout Kellie Wilkerson, who recently became the first female four-time all-American in school history, was Tuesday rewarded with special status, as the Jacksonville, Fla., native was one of 17 players named to the USA Elite team. Wilkerson was joined on the team by three other former SEC players in LSU standouts Britni Sneed and Trena Peel, as well as former Alabama all-American Kelly Kretschman. The Elite Team was chosen from participants at the Women's World Championship Tryout Camp, May 30-June 2, in Chula Vista, CA. The Elite Team will help prepare the World Championship team for the upcoming international events by competing in scrimmages and exhibition games prior to these events. Both teams will compete at the Canada Cup in Surrey, B.C., Canada, July 12-21. Wilkerson finished her career at Mississippi State owning or sharing 26 single season or career records, including career batting average (.429), home runs (44) and RBIs (175). She currently ranks fourth on the NCAA's career walks list as well, drawing 177 free passes in her career with the Maroon and White. As a pitcher for the Bulldogs, Wilkerson finished her career with a 22-11 record and a 1.62 ERA and 32 saves, striking out 175 batters in 208 innings of work. She owns both the NCAA career and single season (14 in 2001) saves records.
