Cons None Full Review Begging to learn I started my six-year-old daughter off with this CD during the summer before she entered first grade. I would never push my children to learn beyond their abilities, but my daughter enjoyed playing this game so much that I would let her spend a half-hour on it each day. Well, I really didn't have a choice. If I didn't, she would beg me to get on the computer and play! She was able to get in, get started and play on her own after I showed her how to navigate to get into the different activities. Once she was familiar with where the activities were located, she could find her way on her own. The Reader Rabbit's 1st Grade CD is head and shoulders above the Reader Rabbit Reading series for the variety of games, the graphics, the characters and the wide reach of the lessons it helps teach your child.

"To Market, To Market" is a software program that can be used for teaching early number concepts. The activities included in the software are engaging and entertaining. The program is designed to build on children’s intuitions about the nature of number. This reflects what mathematics educators and researchers have learned about how children construct concepts of number. Children, using the software, discover relationships (more, less, one more than, one less than, and part-part-whole) that provide a foundation for developing understandings of mathematical operations. The use guide of "To Market, To Market" contains valuable information for teachers. A short summary of research pertinent to children’s learning early number concepts is included. I particularly appreciated the chart showing how the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards and principles are addressed by various games in the program. A matrix of specific concepts and skills matched with games and levels of games allows teachers to direct students to appropriate places for students to work. Teachers will also find the ‘Using the Game to Teach’ most helpful. These pages contain instructional guidance, user tips, and classroom guidance. The resources show teachers

The following review is a continuation of a series of reviews about Business English software in three volumes. The last of this series was a review of Volume II Volume III is entitled Career Advancement and concentrates on the job finding process and in-house communication skills with a short section on British English. It includes:
  • Unit 9: Assignment in U.S. or U.K.
  • Job Advertisements
  • Research a Company
  • Review a resume
  • Draft a Cover Letter
  • Interview Errors
  • Discuss Benefits
  • A Job Offer
  • Resigning from a Company
The first four sections of this unit tracks the application process for a job at an international coffee house which plans to expand overseas. It begins with reading the basic documents of a job search: the job advertisement, a short writeup of the company, the resume of the interested applicant and, finally, a draft of the cover letter. This approach helps familiarize the student with the standard documentation used in a job search. The interview process itself is presented in a challenging and highly interesting manner. The section begins with a nightmare! This whole "nightmare" interview includes about every major mistake that a prospective interviewee could make during an interview. This complete disaster is then followed by the "real" interview that goes very well indeed. By presenting the job interview in this manner students have an excellent opportunity to learn the ins, as well as, the outs of what makes a successful interview. the final listening section is an extremely nice touch which concerns the resignation from a company, an often overlooked but very sensitive matter.

Introduction
Exploration and concept building are at the heart of our software. Cognitive Technologies Corporation's products all employ interactive tutoring, conceptual building, and exploration activities to teach, motivate and build confidence. CTC creatively uses computer technology to transform the learning experience. Studies show that students who use software with animated graphics and navigational techniques that give the user control over the learning experience, learn more and score significant increases on IQ tests (studies released by the Software Publishers Association, Spring 1996 research reports). The teaching techniques used in our programs have helped students score higher on national standardized tests.

  • Willingness to expand one's "definition" of literacy.
  • Encourage understandings of writing as a complex social activity used in a variety of contexts and media for a variety of purposes; teach students how to read contexts
  • Facilitate the transfer of literacy strategies learned in composition/rhetoric classes to other writing contexts
  • Instruct students on how to become better "readers" of their own writing as well as that of their peers as a means to teach them how to become better writers
  • Writing helps students master course material. Writing projects should aim to facilitate learning, rather than just test it.
  • Elevate the position of more informal writing as a component of the composition classroom because it allows students to take risk, it reduces stress and gives them practice in communicating.
  • Develop a collaborative writing activities and assignments
  • Create a peer-based environment, which allows for a decentering of the classroom-sharing of ideas at all stages of the writing process.

http://www.languagemagazine.com/internetedition/ma00/salehi.html
Teacher Training: A Question Of Technology As more and more colleges and institutes purchase technological resources to enhance their curriculum, the need for parallel teacher training is increasing. Successful teacher training courses on technology require effective course development. How can this be done?
In 1996, my colleague Karen Goettsch and I began sending out questionnaires to see how teachers felt about the different types of technology, asking questions about audio, video, computer software, the Internet and email. We wanted to know what teachers were using, what kind of training they were getting, and what kind of training they wanted to get in the future. Teachers by and large responded that they felt it was not enough to get training in using technology. Most teachers primarily wanted to know how to integrate technology into their existing classroom curriculum; to learn how to evaluate different types of educational technology, develop lesson plans, and determine whether it was worth it all.
We used this research to write a book on the topic and to develop various workshops on teaching ESL with technology. We began teaching a class through the Hamline University Graduate Studies program in St. Paul, Minnesota. In this class we work to make teachers more comfortable with using a wide range of technological materials. We emphasize the need for teachers to analyze their students and work from there. Above all, we stress that technology should not be used just because it is currently the latest craze, but only when it can truly enhance their classroom curriculum, and facilitate learning.

    Choosing School Software
by Tammy Payton This article has appeared on the following website: the Well Connected Educator Articles and Interviews
Congratulations! Your school has earmarked money for software, and now you're wondering where to begin! How do you discover the software that will best fit your needs? What kind of software program should you use? What kinds of computer programs are available? What are management systems, and do you need to purchase one? These were questions that we asked ourselves when our school had a major technological renovation in 1994. After serving on the software adoption committee, I began developing questions that helped us evaluate software. This article is a product of our discoveries.
    Software Comes First
Ideally, choose your software before committing yourself to what hardware and platforms you'll be using. By choosing the software before you purchase your computers, you can be sure that the programs will run efficiently. Schools often purchase their operating systems and network software before they've chosen the software. This limits your choices. All software that you purchase has specific system requirements in order for it to run properly. If you've already purchased your hardware, then you need to narrow your software choices to those that will operate on the system and the system's capabilities that you have. If you have a networked system, be sure to see if the software you are looking at has a networked version.
