The first, January, issue of "Teaching English with Technology," a free electronic journal published by IATEFL Poland Computer Special Interest Group, met enormous response of teachers and educators all over the world. The letters written to the editor by subscribers indicate the fact that there is a demand for a publication of a purely practical type, made by teachers and for teachers, including articles describing practical applications of technology in the school reality, plans of lessons actually executed in the classroom, reviews of websites used in language learning or of ELT software. Also, it has been emphasised by some subscribers that the journal is even more valuable because of the fact that it is created in a non-English speaking country, by people who actually had to learn English themselves before they started teaching others. Thus, it seems that non-native teachers' own learning experiences add additional element to the value of the journal. As the editor of "Teaching English with Technology," I am honoured to present the second issue, which I do with my utmost pleasure. When comparing the first and the second issue, we can see that the journal stops being only Polish, but becomes international. This issue features the review of Gavin Dudeney's notable book

However, sometimes it is hard to find the really useful sites among the list of hits received from the search engine query. To answer that question, in this month's Website review I am going to deal with a few sites allowing us to learn and teach writing online. Flo-Joe http://www.flo-joe.co.uk/

63. WholeGrain Software--Diet Self-Study Software
It is original software designed for students to use reviews vitamin/mineral intakein relation to RDA, and reinforces what you've taught them in the classroom.
http://www.wholegrain.com/dssac.html
What is the Diet Self-Study software?
If you have taught a nutrition class at the college level, you are probably familiar with the traditional diet analysis software used in these courses-free software handed out by textbook publishers, or expensive and complex software that is difficult for beginning students to use Both of these will perform competent diet analysis for your students, but neither type provides the student with any background or interpretation, and neither engages the student in basic nutrient-related calculations. The Diet Self-Study is interactive diet analysis software that was written specifically for use by beginning students. It not only performs diet analysis, but it helps you teach students about nutrition by helping them understand what their analysis results mean.
What makes DSS unique?
Here's what DSS has that most ordinary diet analysis software doesn't have:
  • DSS was written by a nutrition instructor specifically for use as a student diet analysis assignment for nutrition/health science classes. This is not a re-hash or spinoff of a standard diet analysis program for dieticians.

AMERICA'S HEROES AND YOU, a new curriculum for students in grades 5 through 9, focuses on the lives of 11 American heroes to foster citizenship and offer positive role models for principals, teachers and students. The curriculum highlights the achievements of heroes like Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt, Cesar Chavez, and describes how each of their lives exemplified one heroic quality - such as courage, determination, self reliance, problem solving or self giving. In the discussion questions and follow-up activities students are invited to recognize that quality in themselves or in someone else close to them, and to use that quality in their lives to become better citizens of their school or community.

Pitching the Profession: Faculty Guest Speakers in the Classroom
    Linda A Mooney
Using an experimental design, the present study examines the impact of faculty guest speakers on introductory sociology students’: (1) certainty of registering for another sociology course, majoring in sociology, or minoring in sociology, (2) interest in taking another sociology class, and (3) perception of sociology as applicable to their lives, to their careers, and as a valued course of study. The results indicate that the experimental manipulation had very little impact on the seven dependent variables, leading to a discussion of the role and content of the introductory course and some suggestions for enhancing student recruitment efforts. Since The Geometer's Sketchpad revolutionized the way we teach geometry, people have seen little need for much else in the way of geometry software. Cabri has developed a bit of a following, but it and most other geometry software are usually described as "like Sketchpad , but ..." The Geometer's Sketchpad has remained the standard. Cinderella is more. Besides all the familiar constructions of Sketchpad Cinderella supports constructions in spherical and hyperbolic geometry, includes a theorem prover (more about that later), has more general animation features, and generates Java applets that paste easily onto web pages. You can also generate applets to create self-checking construction exercises. The creators of the software have a web site, http://www.cinderella.de , that demonstrates many of these features. The animation of a cycloid on a sphere is particularly spectacular. There is a nice animation of a linkage, and the self-checking construction of the bisection of a line segment gives an alluring hint of how Cinderella could be used in the classroom.

Win: Windows 3.1 or higher, 8MB RAM, CD-ROM drive.
DESCRIPTION: Fraction Attraction provides a stimulating environment where students can explore critical fraction concepts including: ordering, equivalence, relative size, understanding fractions as representing distance on a number line, addition and subtraction of fractions, and "counting on" fractions.
Fraction Attraction opens with Gilda, a cheerful alligator who acts as a carnival barker, inviting students to participate in one of four familiar arcade/boardwalk games. Frac Trac is a representation of the game in which players shoot water at a target to move race horses from start to finish. In Place Horses, the student must analyze the fractions/decimals illustrated on the horses' blankets and predict the finishing order. In Place Jockey, the order of finish is predetermined, and the student must place the correct number on the horse to match the finishing order. The game addresses the concept of a fraction representing a specific distance, as opposed to simply a point, on a number line. It also introduces students to "counting on" incrementally with fractions, decimals, and percents.

Purpose of the Project The major goals of the Cyber Teacher Project are to enhance the skills of classroom teachers to use technology in teaching; to increase the number of teachers who could be technological resources in their respective schools; and to expose K-12 students to the use of technology. Project Description Innovative Use of Technology Twenty-five LRSD teachers (participants) are admitted to the Project for a six week summer project taught by a four person faculty team from UALR (faculty).
