Why Teach Music?
by Deborah Jeter

Why Teach Music?
Ever wonder why music has gotten a bad rap within the education system so many times throughout the years? I have. It's bothered me that with all the documentation stating how important music is for the development of the whole child/person, that more people aren't aware of it's critical importance. Without going into the research, 'cause that would be like "preaching to the choir" at this site, (a community of music lovers). I am going to focus on some general and obvious ways music enhances our thinking, our reasoning, our emotions, and our intelligence. The following information was primarily obtained from Southern Music Company in San Antonio, with some of my own beliefs inserted on a "soap box" here and there. I chose to share this information, because many of us will be taking on new students, privately or publicly in the near future. Not only is it a good reminder for us on those more difficult and trying days where we sit and wonder why do I put myself through this?, but it is also a good reference to hand out to parents, and even music-sceptics. It can't hurt! Why Teach Music?

Sidenote: This is an online course for high school students, in Math, Science and Social Studies. iSchoolZone is being used by Schools across the country, to help raise their level of understanding and their test scores. This course is much like their software version of Castle Software. View our review here of Castle Software Social Studies, Science and Math courses are included. iSchoolZone is a new product, offered by Castle Software and is quickly catching on with both homeschoolers and public educators as well. It's ease of use for both the teacher and the students is most likely the reason it is so well favored. It offers great features that many online services do not compare to, as it is a full array of lessons, review and testing tools all in one and is adaptable to any student, anywhere and in any school structure. Teachers can tailor the lessons and tests to match each students own level. This helps when you have identified a problem area you wish for the student to work on, preset it to teach and test them in the areas they need the most help in. Monitor successes per student or as an overall class score in each of the units studied. You are able to review the reports at any time, or print them to put on file for the student.

The musical scale is explained. Octaves, sharps, and flats are defined. A unique audio visual flash card system helps teach the viewer to recognize and name a pitch on the staff. LESSON THREE explains the part played by rhythm (time) in music. Clear, animated graphic examples show how the beat regulates music. The importance of keeping proper time is explained. LESSON FOUR describes and explains musical notes. Whole, half, quarter, and eighth notes are defined, and their relationships to time are explained and illustrated. Clear, animated graphics bring together all of the information presented in the video to show "HOW TO READ MUSIC."

    TYPING PROGRAMS FOR KIDS
Recently, I reviewed several kids' typing programs on radio. So many people sent email and made further inquiries that I've expanded the original content to an in-depth article. It covers why children need to know keyboarding and what features you should look for in a good typing program. It concludes with an analysis of 10 educational software typing programs that are currently on the market. The following products were reviewed:
    I. INTRODUCTION
In the age of electronic communication, typing has become a necessary skill. Knowing how to "operate" a keyboard is not adequate. Many adults and children are familiar with the hunt-and-peck method, but without typing proficiency, they are not able to be productive on the computer. In a classroom situation, children with poor keyboarding skills waste valuable time and miss out on enjoyable learning opportunities. The computer offers many experiences that fuel the child's imagination. The keyboard becomes the tool for expressing their thoughts and ideas. With proper keyboarding skills, homework assignments become much easier. Children are able to learn spelling words, write reports, send letters or email and navigate the Internet. For young children, keyboading skills lead to higher achievement in spelling, vocabulary and literary composition.

My mistake Kyle, confused my two software programs. I did have 2
kids who really enjoyed Widget Workshop, but they were very
advanced. The software I meant escapes me now, but I can picture it
perfectly, and it's at school. If anyone wants this title, let me
      know.
Your mention of The Incredible Machine though reminds me that my
kids went nuts over that too. I had four groups of two that would
stay in during recess for about 2 weeks in order to play it. Great
logical game. Another great piece of software for logic is The
Logical Journey of the Zoombinis. On 8/01/02, Kyle wrote: > Joe, just curious how your second graders liked Widget Workshop. > I've read reviews that while it's labelled as being designed for > kids 8 and above, there was greater interest in the "above" range, > rather than the 8 year-old crowd. Choosing the right software
MALLIKA MANI An awesome array of educational software is flooding the Indian market. Most heads of institutions I meet wonder how to choose the right software from the many sent to them for trial by vendors. Parents too are lost among the stacks of titles in book shops. In the article on critical literacy (Quest, May 14), we looked at the basic criteria that should guide us in choosing and evaluating websites. We also need guidelines to choose educationally appropriate multimedia software for our students. It is no mean task as the medium is comparatively new and authentic reviews are a rarity. As teachers we tend to be limited by the idea that skill development can only be nurtured by the learning sequence laid out in textbooks and workbooks. It is unrealistic to expect every student in the classroom to learn the same way. Technology, especially multimedia helps us reach out to students by tapping their visual, auditory and kinesthetic modalities - at their own pace. Technology like any other innovation is a mixed blessing. But it is here to stay. We need to understand and master the medium to exploit its true potential. Some of the well-known educational games demand high levels of thinking, quick decision making and collaborative effort. None can deny that such software can be an invaluable tool in the classroom to nurture creativity and higher order thinking skills.
