in general . . . Intro Watershed field offices Programs, in general Introduction:
Virginia's Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) coordinates and directs programs and services to prevent degradation of the Commonwealth's water quality and quantity. Most DCR soil and water conservation efforts are devoted to controlling nonpoint source pollution . In fact, DCR is the state's lead agency for developing and implementing statewide nonpoint source pollution control programs and services. Nonpoint source pollution is water pollution caused by diffuse runoff that is not confined to a single discharge point such as a wastewater treatment plant or industrial discharge pipe. Because of the diverse nature of NPS pollution, approaches to addressing the sources must also be diverse. It requires numerous programs and involves a number of state, local and federal agencies, and the private sector. Statewide nonpoint source pollution control programs and services support both individual natural resource stewardship and assist local governments with resource management. These statewide programs are funded through state agency budgets and through non-general fund revenues raised by programs such as sale of Chesapeake Bay license plates. Technical assistance, financial assistance, education and research efforts are enhanced by funds available from the federal Nonpoint Source Pollution Control Program (

Deerwood Soil and Water Management Association The Deerwood Soil and Water Management Association (DSWMA) is a group of 150 local landowners who are committed to the goals of:
  • Continued support of "on-farm" soil and water conservation demonstrations Improving the economic sustainability of the local farm community Improving our collective understanding of agriculture's impact on the envirnment Providing communication and extension activities based on sound, valid information: to rural and urban communities and school educational programs Enhancing wildlife habitat and general esthetics through our conservation activities
Deerwood was formally established in 1984 and in 1989 became one of 44 Local Organizations of Manitoba producers to control and coordinate local conservation program delivery. Deerwood's members farm within an 875 square kilometre area (342 square miles) along the Manitoba Escarpment in South-central Manitoba. The Deerwood group has shown leadership by integrating conservation activities into individual farm managemant plans and by addressing soil and water management problems where they originate. Deerwood's activities focus on the promotion, demonstration, and adoption of conservation measures including:
  • Zero and minimum tillage Rotational grazing Alternative stockwatering methods Small dam construction/watershed management Gully stabilization Grassed waterways Capping abandoned wells Shelterbelt planting and maintenance Soil nutrient management Forages on sensitive lands

    Objectives :
The role of water in crop production and management concepts is very complex. We must deal with a dynamic set of circumstances, crop requirements, climatic variables, soil characteristics, water resources variables and restrictions, irrigation lay-out and design restrictions, which all influence actual irrigation practice and in fact water use efficiency. The goal of partim "Soil Water Management" is to focus on the need for more efficient use of water in irrigated as well as in rainfed agriculture and the methodologies involved. In partim "Soil Salinity Management" the problems of actual and potential salinity and sodicity, combined with their management and reclamation, are described and discussed.

Course Description This course deals with the broad, multi-disciplinary topic of soil and water conservation. Lectures are presented on conservation principles and measures used on U.S. farms. The course is designed for students who will be involved in production agriculture, or soil conservation, or who will be participating in public decisions related to conservation of soil and water issues. Each student will acquire knowledge on specific practices to alleviate soil and water conservation problems, to understand the principles upon which these practices are based, and the challenges which may arise with there use. Lectures will relate to the physical processes associate with soil and water conservation, social and economic interactions and assess the role of government at various levels in the solution of soil and water conservation challenges. Houria Tazi Sadeq , Alliance Maghreb-Machrek pour l'Eau In order to develop successfully, a country must take account of global and regional conditions and pursue a development policy that combines economic growth, sustainable use of natural resources, and improvement of the quality of life of its people. In Morocco, an agricultural-pastoral country, where water is scarce and half the population lives in rural areas, the interaction between humans and nature is particularly intense, for three reasons:
    • For farming families, which make up 80 percent of the rural population, the place of residence is also the workplace, and the separation between life in the home and in the production site is not clearly marked, as it is in the city.
    • Rural areas are directly exposed to constraints imposed by climatic variables and water supply, especially with respect to seasonal activities, income contingencies, and spatial mobility.
    • The wide geographic dispersal of homes, encouraged by the customs of the country, with its inevitable negative consequences for basic infrastructure and various community installations, contributes to the socioeconomic and cultural isolation of families, and is an obstacle to the overall development of the country. Families are forced to lead a more traditional life that is less open to modernity.

    http://soils.calpoly.edu/ss/concentrations.html
SOIL SCIENCE CONCENTRATIONS The Earth and Soil Sciences Department focuses on the management of one of the earth's most precious natural resources, the soil. Students learn to identify and manage soils for agriculture, forestry, range and urban uses and to evaluate and improve environmental quality. This is achieved through a combination of field and laboratory courses, both offering extensive hands-on experience. Students are encouraged to enhance and apply their knowledge, make professional contacts and develop career opportunities through extracurricular activities. Two student clubs, the Soils Club and the Soil and Water Conservation Society, are both affiliated with national professional societies and offer diverse activities for student involvment. The Department also sponsors the Soil Judging team. Cal Poly's undergraduate soil science program has been the largest in the nation for over two decades. Our traditional role has been to educate students for positions in soil conservation, soil survey, soil, water and plant analysis, the fertilizer and agricultural chemical industries, farm and forest and range management, cooperative extension, land reclamation and graduate studies. Our profession, however, is expanding as society is compelled to deal with serious environmental problems. As soil scientists, we work to solve environmental contamination problems mainly by monitoring pollutants from industry, agriculture, transportation and urbanization. Cal Poly's program offers the following concentrations to prepare soil scientists for the 21st century.

Web: http://www.ohiodnr.com/soilandwater Mission Statement Provide leadership and services that enable Ohioans to conserve, protect and enhance soil, water and land resources. Historical Background In 1941, the Conservation Committee was established. Offices were located at The Ohio State University with the Cooperative Extension Service. In 1969, the Committee and its staff became part of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources as the Division of Soil and Water Districts. Meanwhile, in 1949, the Ohio General Assembly passed Amended Senate Bill 13 creating the Division of Lands and Soil to cooperate with all agencies engaged in soil conservation work and to complete an accurate and workable soil and land use inventory of the state. In 1982, the Division of Lands and Soil merged with the Division of Soil and Water Conservation Districts to form the Division of Soil and Water Conservation within ODNR. Main Purpose
    • Implement statewide agricultural, urban and nonpoint water pollution control programs through information/education, technical assistance and cost-share assistance to private landowners/land users and local communities.
