Solomon Islands Migration from all directions over thousands of years has combined with a scattered, comparatively isolated population to produce a country rich in cultural diversity. Melanesians, Polynesians, Asians, Micronesians and the odd Westerner all call the Solomons home, imbuing the islands with a variety of islander traditions unrivaled in the Pacific. With ancient customs still widely practiced in thousands of small villages, local life is an often-unexpected bonus for visitors. Despite centuries of exploitation and let-downs from Western 'visitors', the locals are generally more than happy to allow you access to their land, as well as help you find your way around their part of the world. After its first discovery by the Spanish, the 992-island group was lost for centuries. Travelling to the Solomon Islands remains an adventure even today, however the varied attractions upon arrival more than compensate even the most jaded explorer. Those lured to the Solomons by the promise of extraordinary natural features will not be disappointed; the islands have a well-deserved reputation as possibly the world's best destination for scuba divers, snorkellers and fishing freaks. Despite its long, often bloody history, most historical interest in the Solomons surrounds its pivotal role as a strategic site in the Pacific in WWII. The waters of Iron Bottom Sound are testament to the ferocity and destructive power of battle.
Warning
Following a coup in June 2000, the Solomons suffered widespread lawlessness and civil strife, including armed street battles in Honiara. Officials promised to restore law and order, and to that end the Prime Minister brokered a peace agreement in October 2000 between the two major warring factions, the MEF (representing ethnic Malaitans on Guadalcanal Island) and the IFM (representing natives of Guadalcanal).

Ecotourism Melanesia's SOLOMON ISLANDS
THE SOLOMON ISLANDS
The Solomons
are only three hours flying time from Australia, yet receive less than 5, 000 tourists per year, many of them divers. The country has shied away from mass tourism and sprawling luxury resorts in favour of small-scale ecotourism facilities run by local operators and village communities. Ecotourism in the Solomons focuses on the unspoiled natural environment (both above and below the waterline) and the age-old Island cultures.
The people are mainly Melanesian and number around half a million. Since gaining independence from Britain in 1977, the country has been governed democratically by a Westminster-style parliament with 50 members. Ninety percent of the people still lead subsistence lifestyles in rural villages on the dozen or so larger, mountainous islands. Hundreds of smaller islands lie uninhabited.
The capital, Honiara, is a bustling industrial town of some 50,000 residents, and serves as a jumping-off point for travellers venturing out to sample the attractions of the various island provinces. Divers tend to head for the Western Province, where reefs are pristine and plenteous and the sunken remains of WW2 ships and aircraft remain undisturbed in shallow waters. Cultural tourists are well catered for in Malaita, which still has isolated bush villages virtually unchanged since last century. Brides are still paid for with shell money and pigs, and stories of magic men and giants abound.
