BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... PEOPLE Color SOLOMON ISLANDS The Solomon Islands form an archipelago in the Southwest Pacific about 1,900 kilometers (1,200 mi.) northeast of Australia. The terrain of the Solomon Islands ranges from ruggedly mountainous islands to low-lying coral atolls, the Solomons stretch in a 1,450-kilometer (900 mi.) chain southeast from Papua New Guinea across the Coral Sea to Vanuatu. The main islands of Choiseul, New Georgia, Santa Isabel, Guadalcanal, Malaita, and
Makira have rainforested mountain ranges of mainly volcanic origin, deep narrow valleys, and coastal belts lined with coconut palms and ringed by reefs. The smaller islands are atolls and raised coral reefs, often spectacularly beautiful. The Solomon Islands region is geologically active, and earth tremors are frequent.

    INTRODUCTION
Background: The UK established a protectorate over the Solomon Islands in the 1890s. Some of the bitterest fighting of World War II occurred on these islands. Self-government was achieved in 1976 and independence two years later. Current issues include government deficits, deforestation, and malaria control.

    Geography
Solomon Islands consists of a double chain of over 900 islands, extending 1,600 kilometres along a north-west : south-east axis from Papua New Guinea towards Vanuatu. The sea area of 1.34 million square kilometres is in marked contrast to the 28,000 square kilometres of land area. The climate is tropical, with marked heavy rainfall and cyclonic activity over a 3 to 5 month period each year. Cyclone activity is most severe in the southern and central provinces and is a major influence on the structure and composition of forests and reefs.
The main islands are characterised by a rugged and mountainous landscape, mainly volcanic in origin and fringed with uplifted terraces of coral rock. Seismic activity is common throughout the region. The islands are forest covered and surrounded by a narrow fringe of coral reefs and numerous lagoons. Numerous short rivers drain the islands' rugged terrain. Environmental Values Exceptional areas of karst forest occur on Choiseul and Malaita. Several of the main islands' peaks have cloud forest, notably supporting rare and endemic plant and animal species. The coastal zone comprises an extensive and particularly diverse environment with lowland forest, swamp forest, mangroves, lagoons, coral reefs, atolls and barrier islands forming a natural mosaic.

    SOLOMON ISLANDS
General Information / Location Geography Climate
Location/Geography Forming a scattered archipelago of mountainous islands and low-lying coral atolls, the Solomon Islands stretches about 900 miles in a south-easterly direction from the Shortland Islands to the Santa Cruz islands. There are six major and approximately 992 smaller islands, attolls and reefs. The archipelago covers are area of about 249,000 square nautical miles while the land area is 10,938 sq. miles (28,446 sq. Km). Solomon Islands lies between 155 30' and 170 30'E. longitude and between 5 10' and 12 45'S. latitude. The six biggest islands are Choiseul, New Georgia, Santa Isabel, Guadalcanal, Malaita and Makira. They are characterized by thickly-forested mountain ranges intersected by deep, narrow valleys. Climate The climate is tropical, though temperatures are rarely extreme due to cooling winds blowing off the surrounding seas. Daytime temperatures are normally 25 to 32 c., falling about 3 to 5 at night. From April to October, the Southeast trade winds blow, gusting at times up to 30 knots or more. November to March is the wet season - the northwest monsoon - typically warmer and wetter. Cyclones start in the Coral Sea and the area of the Solomon Islands, but they usually steer towards Vanuatu and New Caledonia or down the coast of Australia.
