Solomon Islands Overview of Solomon Islands In the Solomons, they talk about "The Islands of Pride," a reference not only to their country's natural beauty, but also to the people's contributions to the Allied cause in World War II. It's difficult now to imagine the bloody battles that took place in such an idyllic setting of glimmering lagoons, orchid-laden jungles, thundering waterfalls, forested peaks and thatched-hut villages. The islanders, like the Allied and Japanese forces, suffered dearly during the war. Nowadays, the islands have become a paradise once again (although a paradise with its own problems, from malaria and ethnic clashes to lumber companies cutting down the country's pristine rain forests). The wrecks of World War II ships that lie at the bottom of the sea are the sought-after treasure of recreational divers, and the relics of the islands' once-violent past can be found in museums. Author James Michener described the islands, even during war, as "passionately wonderful." And in many ways they still are. Although accommodations and infrastructure are primitive in most areas, adventurous water lovers will find good beaches, great diving and solitude.

    Research interests:
I am interested in population movements in the third world, generational change in rural populations, mobility and identity, and field methods, with a regional focus on the island Pacific, especially Melanesia. In the early 1990's, I returned to Solomon Islands and worked for the third time in twenty-eight years with the Guadalcanal communities who formed the basis of my doctoral dissertation. The aims of this research were both applied and basic. Applied, because the Solomons' need for information for socioeconomic planning, meant collecting details about population structure and dynamics for comparison with previous field data. The intellectual concern was with local epistemologies of movement as indicating structures of knowledge that have evolved independent of the Western intellectual tradition and might well inform its blinkeredness.
