CULTURE
Greetings Somali warmly greet each other with handshakes, but shaking hands with the opposite sex is avoided. Common verbal greetings include:
  • Assalam Alaikum (Peace be upon you) Nabad miyaa (is their peace). Subah wanaagsan (Good morning) Galab wanaagsan (Good afternoon) Habeeb wanaagsan (Good night)
Gestures Somali use sweeping hand and arm gestures to dramatize speech. Many ideas are expressed through specific hand gestures:
  • A swift twist of the open hand means "nothing" or "no". Snapping fingers may mean "long ago" or and "so on" A thumb under the chin indicates "fullness". It is impolite to point the sole of one's foot or shoe at another person. It is impolite to use the index finger to call somebody; that gesture is used for calling dogs. The American "thumbs up" is considered obscene.
Dating and Marriage
Dating in the Western sense does not exist in Somalia. Young urban people often meet at universities or at work and persuade their parents to help them establish a courtship. Rural marriages are usually arranged. One-to-one dating is reserved for after the engagement party or after the marriage contract has been signed.

UNESCO Culture of Peace Programme
Although Somalia has long since ceased to be a focus of media interest, the war between rival clan-leaders in that country continues. Because the majority of the Somali population is keen to see an end to the war, UNESCO. working with the European Union, has decided to give them its backing by launching another national `Culture of Peace' programme specifically for Somalia. The `Culture of Peace' programme was developed by UNESCO in 1994 on the basis of the `Agenda for Peace'. Its main objective is to promote the transformation of violent into non-violent forms of conflict resolution. This transformation is to take place primarily through the provision of support to groups that are of significance to peace in countries where there is conflict. The joint action and support of local non-governmental organizations is of prime importance in this connection. In preparation for the introduction of this programme in Somalia, a number of conferences have been held, to work out the practical details. The latest of these took place in Addis Abiba in June this year. The programme is to be implemented via a Somali umbrella organization, the Somali Peace Line (SPL), which will co-ordinate the various Somali peace groups. Another aspect of the SPL's task is to identify and check out projects that are of relevance to peace in the areas of communication and peace education. This includes projects within the framework of formal and informal education, training programmes of all kinds, and the setting-up of radio, cultural, and sports programmes. The major target-groups are the militias, unemployed young people, women, traditional/religious leaders, artists, journalists, and intellectuals. Anyone interested in further information can write to Thania Paffenholz at the following address.

According to the international human rights organisation Amnesty International, under Barre "a persistent pattern of political repression and gross human rights violations developed...[including] routine torture of political prisoners, thousands of detentions without charge or trial, grossly unfair political trials, many of which resulted in executions, and extrajudicial executions of thousands of civilians." Survivors: Portraits of Children and War
The United Nations Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict recently released the following numbers. In the past decade:
  • 2 million children have been killed in conflict situations
  • Over 1 million have been made orphans
  • Over 6 million have been seriously injured or permanently disabled
  • Over 10 million have been left with grave psychological trauma
At the present moment:
  • There are over 20 million children displaced by war
  • Some 300,000 young persons under the age of 18 are currently being exploited as child soldiers around the world
  • Approximately 800 children are killed or maimed by landmines every month
Last year innovative theater director Ping Chong joined with the Center for Multicultural Human Services to create "Children Of War," a new multi-disciplinary theater work based on the personal testimonies of a diverse group of young people who have experienced war and domestic trauma. The piece evolved through discussions between Ping Chong and the participants. "Children Of War" is part of Ping Chong's "Undesirable Elements" series which explores history, culture, and ethnicity's effects on individuals and their communities.

http://www.dnd.ca/somalia/vol1/v1c5e.htm
MILITARY CULTURE AND ETHICS
The culture and ethics that inform the Canadian military are important to an understanding of the events that took place in Somalia. While a series of isolated incidents may seem unrelated on the surface, they may also reflect deeper institutional shortcomings regarding ethical matters and underlying cultural attitudes regarding duty and accountability. This chapter briefly explores some elements of Canadian military culture and ethics as a background to our inquiry into the experience of the Canadian Forces in Somalia. The specific focus is three aspects of military life: its corporate separateness from society, changes in the nature of military professionalism, and the role of ethics in the military.
SEPARATENESS
Common to most modem military organizations is the notion of being different from the rest of society. The Canadian military is no different from other armed forces in feeling a consequent separateness from society. In 1869, William Windham described armed forces generally as "a class of men set apart from the general mass of the community, trained to particular uses, formed to peculiar notions, governed by peculiar laws, marked by peculiar distinctions". According to a recent DND statement of the Canadian military ethos, the Canadian military sees itself as "a distinct sub-set of the entire Canadian fabric".

Somalia's gun culture the bane of peace
By Ali Musa Abdi
NAIROBI SOMALIAN WOMEN PROTEST VIOLENCE
With almost every able-bodied male in Somalia possessing a gun, the truce signed by faction leaders on Sunday is seen more as a symbolic gesture than a guarantee that peace will suddenly return after more than a decade of bloodletting. Freelance gunmen are largely young adults or teenagers who owe no allegiance to any of Somalia's numerous warlords or leaders of armed clan-based factions. "All armed men in a faction are not answerable to a leader," Liban Sheikh Ahmed, a militia leader in central Mogadishu's Bermuda neighborhood, said on Tuesday. "The boss of a faction is not automatically the owner of the guns and battle wagons claimed by his faction." In some cases, one "battle wagon" can be co-owned by several groups: the gunmen who stole the vehicle, those who brought the machinegun and those who pay for repairs. The fact that most of Somalia's armed groups are not clearly defined is also expected to make it difficult to apportion blame during inevitable outbreaks of violence. Some businessmen are known to have their own armories or to finance clan warriors, Ahmed said.

    ** Description **
Somalia, the Horn of Africa nation, is finally recovering from recent wars and famine. Written by a native Somali, Culture and Customs of Somalia gives students and interested readers an in-depth look at the land and people, past and present. It is the only accessible, comprehensive, and up-to-date general reference on this country.
This Muslim country has strong pastoral roots and is known as a land of poets with a long oral cultural tradition. Some highlights found herein include discussion of handcrafts and artisanry, distinctive architecture and nomad housing, camel culture, intriguing food and eating customs, rites of passage, leisure and economic pursuits, education, and the Somali musical genres. A chronology, glossary, and numerous photos enhance the text.
"...refreshingly original in its description of aspects of Somali culture and surprisingly parochial in the survey of Somali political history."

These artists and singers perform at community events, weddings and holiday parties on a regular basis, and other Somalis come from all over the world to see these artists perform. All of this contributes to the development of Somali culture in Canada.
FOOD The main meal of the day is eaten at midday; morning and evening meals are lighter. People usually begin the day with a flat bread called Anjeeero, liver, toast, cereal or porridge made of millet or cornmeal. The midday meal consists of rice or noodles with sauce and perhaps meat. Beef is less popular than goat or camel meat. In Somalia, certain cuts of meat are considered suitable for men, while others are reserved for women and children. The evening meal is very light and might include beans, muffo (patties made of oats or corn), or a salad with more Anjeero. Special tea is the favourite drink, but sheep, goat and camel's milk are also popular. Cow's milk is used only when the others are not available.
