... Back to Contents page Introduction A message From Brigitte Mabandla, Deputy Minister Of Arts, Culture, Science And Technology I would like users of this catalogue, both South Africans and international visitors, to see it as an invitation to experience the rich and varied arts and culture one finds in South Africa. On these pages are informed analyses and descriptions of a wide range of what our country has to offer, written by respected experts in each field. Each article is, in itself, an important document about the history of its subject matter. The Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology has developed this resource because we feel that it fills a gap. South Africa boasts a kaleidoscope of culture, yet, unless you are an insider, it is very difficult to access. This is the case even among South Africans themselves. The majority of white South Africans have never gone to a shebeen even where many exist a few kilometres away, and the majority of black South Africans don't go to see an opera even if it only means a simple bus trip. It follows than even fewer South Africans consider travelling to another city within the country simply to experience a different manifestation of South African culture. Tourists from other countries are increasingly interested in experiencing South Africa's culture, arts and heritage. Often, however, they do not know how to access these aspects of our country. Through this catalogue we hope to help you to scratch the surface of what makes our country unique.

FINE ART .... Overview Go to: University Collections Crafts Contents page By Bongi Dhlomo-Mautloa T he beginning of the final decade of the century, with the lifting of the cultural boycott, opened up South Africa to the African continent and the world and ensured this country's artists their place amongst the international art world. Because the majority of the population have, historically, been restricted to only a limited education, the community of art practitioners, art educators, patrons, supporters and promoters make up only a very small percentage of the more than 43 million people in South Africa. In the 1960s, the Polly Street Art Centre in downtown Johannesburg, the Rorke's Drift Art and Craft Centre in Northern KwaZulu-Natal and the Johannesburg Art Foundation started to offer art classes for black African students who were excluded from accessing art classes through the South African education system. The Jubilee Art Centre in central Johannesburg joined these alternative art education centres in the 1970s but was forced to relocate to the Mofolo Art Centre in Soweto when the Group Areas Act made it illegal for black students to be educated in the city. More and more centres like these, eg Abangani Art Centre in Durban, Community Art Project in Cape Town, the Federated Union of Black Arts and the Open School in Johannesburg emerged in most major cities in response to demand by students who wanted an art education.

Gang Rape and the Culture
of Violence in South Africa
Published in German under the title, , in , No. 2, pp. 39-42, 1993. Lloyd Vogelman is a founder and former Director of the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation. Sharon Lewis is a former Researcher at the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation. Violence against women is a virtually universal phenomenon, and it is widespread, common and deeply entrenched in most societies. Rape, one of the most conspicuous forms of this violence, has reached epidemic proportions in South Africa. It occurs in all spheres of society and all women are potential victims. Women's fear of rape has begun to affect their basic day to day decisions and reduce their quality of life. This paper will explore and attempt to explain the high incidence of rape in South Africa. The focus of the paper is on the phenomenon of gang rape, which in many ways crystallises the power issue which is at the nexus of rape. Gang rape is also an increasingly common form of rape: in a recent South African study, approximately forty four percent of rapists had engaged in gang rape , while in the United States it is estimated that one in four rapes are gang rapes.

Until recently, filmmakers could work only within a culture that reluctantly took black South Africans into account. Therefore, to explore what South African cinema has been and could become, the authors do not limit their discussion to film production but approach cinema as a manifestation of cultural history. How has the purpose of cinema been viewed at different times in South Africa, by different governments and social groups? What is the relation between film and a sense of nationhood in South Africa? Such questions lead to a consideration not only of films made by South Africans in South Africa but also of an unfolding film culture within a series of stages that have yet to give rise to a national cinema. "A compelling and refreshingly provocative overview and analysis of the history, development and constantly unfolding state of film and film culture in South Africa and its impact on South African experiences. This impressive collection of essays addresses a broad range of issues and questions about cinema and society. At the same time, it offers an abundance of information and critical perspectives on individual films as well as the complex of political, economic and other institutional factors that have shaped and continue to shape film practices in South Africa."

CULTURE-SOUTH AFRICA: 200 Years of Sexual Abuse End in Proper Burial Anthony Stoppard JOHANNESBURG, Aug 6 (IPS) - The remains of Sarah Bartmann a Khoi woman who died over 200 years ago are to be buried with honour as part of South Africa's National Women's Day celebrations on Friday (Aug 9). The laying to rest of Bartmann - whose remains were kept on display in a French museum from her death in 1815, until 1974 - have been hailed by traditional leaders as an opportunity for the Khoi-San to regain their dignity. The Khoi are among the earliest indigenous peoples to settle in Southern Africa - and are recognised as one of the first nations of the world. While there is dispute about some of the historical points, there is little doubt that Bartmann's story is one of the saddest of European colonialism in Africa.

CULTURE-SOUTH AFRICA: Government Plans For Open University Opposed Anthony Stoppard JOHANNESBURG, Jan 16 (IPS) - - Plans to create Africa's largest distance learning education is being frustrated by managements opposed to the changes. As part of a plan to restructure higher education in South Africa, the Department of Education plans to merge Unisa, with two other distance learning institutions, Technikon Southern Africa (TSA) and the distance learning-centre of Vista University. While the majority of the students the three serve are South African, they all have learners registered across Southern Africa and the rest of the continent. With just under 112 000 students, Unisa is one of the biggest distance learning institutions in the world. While the bulk of these students are in South Africa, there are over 6000 in Southern Africa and the rest of the continent - and another 2 500 across the world.
