Silencing South Africa's gun culture
By Africa Correspondent Jane Standley
At least 30 people are shot dead in South Africa every day and there are more than four million registered firearms in the country and millions more illegal guns. These grim statistics have forced the government to try to tighten the laws on gun control. But with some of the highest levels of violent crime in the world, the government has been accused of doing too little, too late.
Gelusksdal school is now a gun-free zone But some campaigners who want a gun-free society have begun their own initiative to combat South Africa's dependence on guns. Teacher Mike Moses began his own crusade against guns when his pupils began bringing them into the classroom. At 16 all the students can legally own firearms. Now he has support from the small campaigning group Gun Free South Africa, and Gelusksdal Secondary School is a gun-free zone. Jane Standley reports on the efforts in Gelusksdal to combat gun-culture Charlene Badnes is one pupil who has direct experience of what damage guns can do. "My father was killed," she says. "I hate guns."

Culture Bearing the rich legacy of an area that saw the first meetings of Khoisan, British, Dutch, German and Xhosa peoples, the city of Nelson Mandela Bay can rightfully boast a unique historical heritage. Strong growth in cultural tourism is indicated internationally, and the Eastern Cape's Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has recently initiated a twinning agreement with China to make further advances in this sub-sector. Historical rambles trace the colourful early decades of the European colonisation of the Eastern Cape. The well laid-out Donkin Heritage Trail links numerous places of historical interest in the central city area. The history and elegant lifestyle of the Victorian era is preserved at No 7 Castle Hill Museum, the oldest surviving Settler cottage dwelling in Nelson Mandela Bay. The colonial City Hall is a national monument, while the main public library is an excellent example of Victorian Gothic architecture. Various memorials are situated throughout the city environs, and social, historical and traditional township tours are available.

“I definitely feel incorporated in the student body here but it is still striking to me how segregated it is, although I guess it really shouldn’t surprise me.” South Africa: Academic Culture
The undergraduate degrees at the University of Cape Town and the University of Natal are three-year degrees and local students are already quite specialized in their fields by the time they enter second- or third-year courses. Therefore, it is expected that UC students applying to these programs will have completed the basic prerequisites and taken some upper-division courses in their major. UC students need to be familiar with the methodology of their major if they expect to enroll for upper-division credit in that discipline.
Academic expectations are high, particularly at the upper levels, at the South African universities. Instruction takes a more independent approach than students usually experience at UC. Assigned readings and other class requirements may make course work appear deceptively light, but students are expected to set their own pace of mastering the subject matter and to incorporate readings and lectures without detailed schedules from instructors. Science courses include strong practical lab requirements that are usually integrated into each weekly course.

SOUTH AFRICA: Understanding youth culture is key UN Integrated Regional Information Networks - January 15, 2003 JOHANNESBURG, 15 January (IRIN) - Over 60 percent of HIV/AIDS infections in South Africa occur before the age of 25, a recent report from the South African University of Cape Town has revealed. The report focuses on "high risk" sexual activity among the youth and makes particular reference to South Africa. HIV/AIDS awareness programmes aimed at promoting safer sex practices should come from understanding youth sexual culture, the report suggests. Moreover, the report warns that unless steps are taken to challenge socio-economic conditions which support high-risk sexual behaviour, HIV/AIDS education is not likely to make much of a difference.

96. Culture - Study Abroad In South Africa
recent times, migrant workers and immigrants have come from neighbouring countriesand indeed the whole of africa. A new south african culture is being
http://www.studysa.co.za/about/culture.html
outh Africa must surely be the only country in the world with 11 official languages. This reflects not just a country made up of many peoples, but a country which is in effect many sizeable nations in one. In the cities, these cultures mix together in a unique and vibrant blend which is something more than the sum of its parts.
Our nation is made up of people of diverse origins. Indigenous South Africans include the great Zulu and Xhosa nations who dominated the eastern parts of the country until the late 19th century, the Pondo, the Venda from the misty northern province, the Sothos from their mountain Kingdom, the Setswana, the Fingo, the Tsonga, the Pedi and MaShona and many more.
These people from the north found the Khoi and the San, original inhabitants of our mountains, deserts and rocky coastlines. More recent arrivals were the Dutch colonists and Huguenot refugees from France who together formed the foundation of the Afrikaner nation, the settlers from Great Britain and all over Europe, the Malays who came as slaves to the Cape, the Indians who came as indentured sugar cane cutters almost 100 years ago, the Chinese and others. And in more recent times, migrant workers and immigrants have come from neighbouring countries and indeed the whole of Africa. They came for different reasons, stayed, struggled and eventually came to call this country home.
In the cities these cultures mix, and blend to form something uniquely South African.

100. South Africa- Education & Culture
Education culture. Education Apartheid also made its mark on educationin south africa. The government spending on black education
http://www.angelfire.com/ok/southernafrika/educationandculture.html
Education Apartheid also made its mark on education in South Africa. The government spending on black education has increased since the mid 1980’s. At the end of apartheid, the amount spent of white pupils was four times what was spent on black pupils. The teacher to student ratio was one to sixty for blacks in urban areas, one to ninety for blacks in rural areas and one to thirty, or less for whites. 41% of black students passed the secondary school final exam in the early nineties. You needed to pass this exam to go to university. 96% of white students passed, 95% of Indian students passed and 83% of Coloured students passed. The black literacy rate is less than 50%, while the white literacy rate is almost 100%. As apartheid was cancelled, more non-white students began to attend educational institutions, that were only attended by whites before. Most blacks that attend these schools are well off. Culture There are distinct cultural developments. The English culture is the dominant influence. The distinction between Afrikaners and English is diminishing, especially with young people. The Afrikaner culture is strongest in rural areas. There has been a new sense of self pride in the Coloured community. They have found expression in writing, theatre and music. Almost all cities in South Africa have public libraries. The largest is the Johannesburg Public Library, with more than 1.6 million books. The National Museum in Bloemfontein has archaeological, paleontological and anthropological connections. The Africana Museum in Johannesburg has historical and ethnological connections. There are many other museums too.
