    INTRODUCTION
Background: After the British seized the Cape of Good Hope area in 1806, many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to found their own republics. The discovery of diamonds (1867) and gold (1886) spurred wealth and immigration and intensified the subjugation of the native inhabitants. The Boers resisted British encroachments, but were defeated in the Boer War (1899-1902). The resulting Union of South Africa operated under a policy of apartheid - the separate development of the races. The 1990s brought an end to apartheid politically and ushered in black majority rule.

Geography France is endowed with a number of exceptional geographic features which, throughout its history, have greatly contributed to its economic development and its place in the international arena. They include the remarkable balance and rich diversity of its natural environment, and a privileged location on the map which predestines it to be a world crossroads. A Strategic Location An Essential Link in Europe France is part of Europe and, more particularly, of the European Union. Founded in 1957 by the Treaty of Rome, the EU originally included six countries (France, the former Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg). It now consists of fifteen countries. It is not an overstatement to say that France is a cornerstone of Europe by reason of: Its size: as stated earlier, measured on a world scale, France is not among the largest countries but, within the framework of Europe, the position is different; France is, in fact, the largest country in the EU and represents 16% of its total area. It is larger than Germany or Italy and twice as large as the United Kingdom.

South Africa Yesterday and Today The Covenant by James Michener, 1980, Fawcett or Ballantine Books.
Many readers feel that Michener has an unerring feeling for the birth of nations, and this is one of his best all-encompassing historic novels. He traces South Africa's past from 500 years ago to contemporary events, told from the perspective of three families, African, Afrikaans, and English. Although this book was published before apartheid ended and therefore doesn't contain the latest events of South Africa, it is still well worth reading.
