Helping Preserve the History of the Anti-Apartheid Movement
It was all there, stored much the way the history of your family might be boxed away in dusty attics of family members scattered here and there. All that was needed was a good dose of organization. Old photos in one box, a sheaf of letters in another, and mixed in, the memorabilia that recorded the turbulent history of South Africa. Archiving such a collection was a daunting but significant task, for these boxes contained many of the artifacts that preserve the story of the anti-apartheid movement. Eight School of Information graduate students, two professors, and two archivists from the U-M Bentley Historical Library took on the assignment at Fort Hare University in Alice, South Africa. Associate Professor Margaret Hedstrom and Assistant Professor David Wallace led the team. This was the second summer that SI has worked with the University of Fort Hare; in 1997 Hedstrom surveyed what needed to be done and recommended a plan. On this latest trip, archivists Brian Williams and William Wallach of the Bentley provided their expertise and assisted doctoral student Denise Anthony and master's students Heather Briston, Cal Lee, Jennifer Lewis, Lisa Robinson, John Simpson, Ntombizandile "Punky" Kwatsha, and Tabitha R. Oglesby. Kwatsha is an archives assistant from Fort Hare who came to SI in fall 1997 to earn a Master of Science in Information.

A short history of South Africa Early days
If the history of South Africa is in large part one of increasing racial divisiveness, today it can also be seen as the story of - eventually - a journey through massive obstacles towards the creation, from tremendous diversity, of a single nation whose dream of unity and common purpose is now capable of realisation. The earliest representatives of that diversity - at least the earliest we can name - were the San and Khoekhoe peoples (otherwise known individually as the Bushmen and Hottentots or Khoikhoi; collectively called the Khoisan). Both were resident in the southern tip of the continent for thousands of years before its written history began with the arrival of European seafarers. And before that, modern human beings had lived here for more than 100 000 years - indeed, the country is an archaeological treasure chest.

These chief executives formally met in January 1971 to discuss a coherent strategy for European business to face challenges in the international marketplace. He secured the patronage of the Commission of the European Communities, as well as the encouragement of Europe's industry associations.
Over the course of three decades, the Forum has grown from those humble beginnings to a unique, member-based institution comprised of the 1,000 foremost corporations worldwide. The World Economic Forum provides a platform for dialogue and serves as a catalyst for action. This has led to achievements in various areas including: peace building, health, development and corporate citizenship.
The Forum moved its Annual Meeting from its traditional setting in Davos, Switzerland to New York in an act of solidarity with the city.

The Forgotten People of the West Coast: Who were the GuriQua?
The coastal regions of the south-western Cape were densely occupied by pastoralists, or herders, known as the Khoikhoi. The West Coast region was the land of the CochoQua, which included Saldanha Bay to Vredenburg. The ChariGuriQua or GuriQua occupied the lower Berg River area, St Helena Bay and points around Piketberg. Archaeological sites on the West Coast, like Kasteelberg, show occupation by herders between 1800 and 1600 years ago. Places where whales often strand themselves along the shore are known as 'cetacean traps', which are areas where minima in the earth's magnetic field cross the shoreline, and where there are offshore reefs. St Helena Bay, or more specifically, Slipper Bay appears to be one of these 'cetacean traps', approximately 12km from Kasteelberg. It is well recorded that whale meat was used by the Khoikhoi. The GuriQua and the SonQua (Bushmen) are forgotten in the history of the West Coast. They were here to witness the arrival and departure of Vasco da Gama. He stayed a mere 8 days in St Helena Bay and is revered as one of the greatest navigators and explorers. The history of the Khoikhoi and the SonQua after 1652 is well documented and it would be impossible to summarise it in this short review, except to mention the 1713 small-pox epidemic, which was one of the main causes for the virtual disappearance of the Khoikhoi from the south-western Cape.
