  • Four days walking the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu , with loads carried by porters. Three days out of remote Lares , north of Cuzco , with loads carried by llamas and horses. The popular Santa Cruz Trek, in the Cordillera Blanca mountains, Huascaran National Park , with loads carried by donkeys.
  • We avoided altitude sickness by ascending gradually with each trek, walking a total of 85 miles, and eventually hiking to an elevation of 15,600 feet in the spectacular Cordillera Blanca mountain range. Luckily my friends Cecile and Dave had booked our trip package directly in Peru with Atalante Quechua for half the price of a US-based adventure travel company.

Zentmyer Department of Plant Pathology, University of California, Riverside, CA 92521, USA Abstract. Archaeological and other evidence indicates that avocados were cultivated in Mexico, Central America, and western South America in very early times, possibly up to 6000 years ago. There are also prehistoric records of avocados in California. Information will be presented on all of these aspects, including pre-conquest avocados in Mexico and Guatemala, results of explorations in Peru, and fossil records from California. Mexican records include those from Tehuacan Valley and Oaxaca Valley. Avocados in Guatemala have been recorded from the Ocos region on the Pacific Coast toward the Mexican border, in Kaminaljuyu in the Finca Las Charcas Archaeological site near modern Guatemala City from approximately 800 B.C., in ancient excavations of the Sacatepequez phase in the Department of Sacatepequez, in Iximche in the central highlands of Guatemala, and at San Andres Sematabaj near Lake Atitlan. Remains of avocado seeds have also been reported as frequent in archaeological sites on the coast of Peru, and in the Moche Valley of Peru, the latter dating to 2000 B.C. Schroeder has reported fossil records of

    Atlatl Archeology
    Precision Atlatl and Dart Systems
    By: Bob "Atlatl Bob" Perkins
O ver 12,000 years ago, hunters tracking herds of the last ice age across the frozen tundra of what is now the state of Alaska became the first immigrants to enter the North American continent. These hunter-gatherers brought with them a weapon that reigned supreme among them and their descendents for thousands of years to come, the Atlatl. It was the first true weapons system developed by humans, originating in Europe over 30,000 years ago and spreading to every corner of the globe that humans occupied. In fact the Atlatl and Dart were used and improved upon for so long by our ancient ancestors that, comparatively speaking, the Bow and Arrow can be considered a recent development in projectile technology. So powerful and effective was the Atlatl that scientist and scholars speculate that it, along with the overkill tactics so common to the human race, caused the extinction of the Woolly Mammoth in North America before the end of the ice age.
Largely replaced by the Bow and Arrow around a birth of Christ, it was still being used by some Native Americans during the age of discovery, 500 years ago. When Columbus encountered natives using the Atlatl during his voyages to the New World, Europeans who had long forgotten the weapon, soon became familiar with it again. These encounters were most certainly with the business end of the weapon, the European wondering, "what was that?", just before dying.

Mining and Industrial Archeology Cornwall has an incredibly rich mining and industrial tradition. From before Roman times tin, copper and other minerals have been extracted from the ground, first by streaming and then later by digging deeper and deeper underground and further out under the sea. Sadly, the last working tin mine, South Crofty, is presently closed but Cornwall and its pioneers have left the world a legacy including the Davy Lamp, the world's first public street lighting and a unique industrial archeolgy. Above all, the diaspora that followed mine closures in the nineteenth century resulted in Cornish miners becoming pioneers of new hard-rock mines in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, South America and South Africa. One product of the Cornish mining history has been a rich output of literature, past and present, about minig, the mines and miners. We are pleased to stock all known British published booksin print about Cornish mining as well as titles specially imported from the USA, South Africa and New Zealand. Our database includes over 100 books about mining, and industrial archeology. The titles below are new titles or ones recently added to the database.

    The Amazon Rainforest of Brazil
    Heart of Amazonia
Come with us to experience the great beauty and mystery that still exist in the Amazon! From the crystal clear waters of deep forest streams to the massive canopy of the highland rainforest...from tiny leaf cutter ants to the largest mammals swinging by their tails in the trees, we will coax from our observations the marvelous story of the most fantastic collection of wildlife on earth. The Amazon is the world's largest rainforest and the last great wilderness on Earth. Though as big as the continental United States, most of Amazonia is without human settlement where the fantastic beasts that have roamed its vast rainforests since time immemorial still live.
Itinerary (11 days including 9 day cruise)
Day 1 Day 2 Early this morning explore the rainforest along the waters edge in our launches. We should hear and perhaps see howler monkeys and there should be a morning serenade of toucans along with a hundred other kinds of birds. Walking in the forest we will get a good start on understanding Amazon ecology. Around midday return to the boat and continue sailing, perhaps stopping at a place to swim. In the early afternoon we will explore the forest in our launches and listen to the sunset chorus of birds and frogs. This evening after dinner we may hunt for nocturnal wildlife and even catch a small caiman to examine closely. (BLD) Day 3 This morning starts with an early exploration of the waking forest. On our walk in the forest we will keep our eyes open for bearded sakis or squirrel monkeys. Return for breakfast and a swim and travel during the middle of the day on the Tucano. Mid-afternoon excursion in our launches. Tonight we will make some headway on our course and stop at a good place for our morning expedition. (BLD)
