http://www.bearden.org/spebear.html
SPECTACLED BEAR Tremarctos ornatus Description: The spectacled bear is a small black bear with cream-colored facial markings around its eyes that give it its name. Females weigh about 150 pounds and males may reach 250 pounds. They have a total body length of 60 to 72 inches. Range: The spectacled bear is found in Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
Habitat: It lives in a variety of forested Andes mountain habitats, ranging in elevation from 500 to 14,000 feet. The spectacled bear is an excellent tree climber and forages in the trees. It is most often found in what is called the cloud forest, a lush, misty ecosystem of the Andes. The spectacled bear is thought to play a vital role in the forest by scattering seeds through its droppings, a function called seed dispersal. Diet: The favorite food of the spectacled bear is fruit and it will also eat varieties of bromeliads, rodents and insects. When feeding in fruit trees the spectacled bear will bend back many branches forming a "nest" that will serve as a feeding platform and a daytime refuge. When a spectacled bear strays into human farmland it is often shot on sight because it is considered a pest species for both the farmer's crops and livestock. Social Organization: Little is known about the behavior of this shy forest bear. It is believed that they are mostly nocturnal and spend the day time sleeping in self-made tree nests, large tree root cavities or on ground beds. At sites of abundant food, as with fruiting trees, several bears can be seen feeding in close proximity with very little interaction between them. Only mothers with young have been seen traveling together so it is assumed spectacled bears lead solitary lives.

South America finds its way to Tucson zoo
By Carol Romero
A three-acre South American animal exhibit will open in early 1997 at the Reid Park Zoo. Zoo officials think the addition will increase attendance that will result in raising the educational valu e of all of the exhibits. The City of Tucson could gain research, conservation and educational capabilities from the planned exhibit. "We do not know exactly how many animals there will be at the opening," said Vivian Warren, zoo education curator. "We are still in the process of locating animals from around the country." All of the animals being acquired for the new addition have been in other zoos within the United States. The zoo trades, purchases and borrows animals from other zoos to enhance the collection. The animals that will be on display include a spectacled bear, anteater, llama, rhea, capybara, caiman, tapir, jaguar, piranha, sloth, water fowl and South American bird species, Warren said. The zoo already has the tapir, llama, caiman, sloth and many birds that will be on display in 1997. They are currently being housed behind the scenes until the opening of the new area. All animals that enter the zoo go through a quarantine period of at least 30 days to ensure the health of all other animals. Quarantine is conducted in a health center at the zoo. After quarantine , animals are introduced to their new homes under the supervision of the zoo's staff.

Zoos treat nutrition as a vital key to animal conservation.

When Elmer Franken hand-feeds a dead mouse to a South American condor, he prefers a fuzzy rather than a pinky. A pinky is so young that it hasn't yet grown fur or a tail. A fuzzy has both fur and tail. "There's enough tail to hold onto [with a fuzzy]," Franken explained, and condors "have very sharp beaks." Eminent chefs such as Georges Perrier might never have experienced the daunting dietary concerns of Franken, a keeper at the Philadelphia Zoo. And, yes, "pinkies" and "fuzzies" are how zoo folks refer to such delicacies. On a recent morning feeding of the condors, Franken was showing how he has trained one soarer of the Andes to accept delectable mouse morsels up close. Along with throwing them dead rats and quails from a distance, Franken occasionally likes to hand-feed a male.

Saving the Black Rhino
Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Gets Involved
And So Can You
The mission of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is 'to improve the future for wildlife' but the goal of saving critically endangered black rhinos cannot be accomplished alone. The Zoo worked with many conservation groups including the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA), the International Rhino Foundation, the South African National Park Board, Kansas City Zoological Park, and the Cincinnati Zoo to pair black rhinos, Inge and Spike. Their future offspring will strengthen the genetic diversity of the black rhino population. AMERICAN ZOO AND AQUARIUM ASSOCIATION:
Known as AZA, the American Zoo and Aquarium Association represents virtually every professionally operated zoological park, aquarium, and wildlife park in North America. AZA supports membership excellence in conservation, education, science, and recreation. SPECIES SURVIVAL PLANS:
The AZA established Species Survival Plans (SSP), a cooperative population management and conservation program for selected species or rare, threatened, and endangered animals in North American zoos and aquariums. Each SSP manages the breeding of a species in order to maintain a healthy, genetically diverse and self-sustaining population. It's like a computer dating service designed to produce the healthiest babies for the zoo population. Maintaining a healthy captive population is essential to the survival of any species facing the threat of extinction. Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is participating in the 51 SSPs including the black rhino SSP.

The Bali Mynah
WHAT IS IT? It's one of about 15 species of mynah, a type of Asian bird that can be trained to mimic human language. It's much smaller than the Greater Hill mynah, the big black-and-yellow bird most people think of when they think of mynahs. It's almost all white, with turquoise eye patches and black wing bars. Males and females both have a white crest that they raise during courting. WHERE DOES IT LIVE? It lives on Bali, one of about 13,600 islands that make up the Republic of Indonesia, in southeast Asia. It has never lived anywhere else, but its range has shrunk dramatically. IS IT ENDANGERED? Extremely. There are fewer than 20 left in the wild. The birds live on 30 square miles of Bali Barat National Park. They used to range across about a third of Bali. In 1913, when the birds were first discovered by scientists, there were large flocks - maybe as many as 2,000. WHAT HAPPENED? In the late 1960s, hundreds of birds were trapped and sold to zoos, mainly in North America and Europe. In 1973, Indonesia made it illegal to hunt the birds. But once people realized how rare they were, they became a kind of status symbol in Indonesia. Poaching is still a problem. The birds are sold illegally for $2,000. WHAT'S BEING DONE?

Vital Stats
Two female Sumatran tigers were born Monday, December 16, 2002 at Woodland Park Zoo. At birth, each cub weighed approximately 2.3 pounds. The litter represents the first offspring between 10-year-old mother JoJo and 9-year-old Rakata (RAH-ka-ta), and the first birth of the endangered species at the zoo since 1992. The cubs remain off public exhibit.
  • On February 20, the cubs weighed just over 17 pounds. From nose to tail, one is 34 inches long and the other is 35 inches long. The cubs are very strong and feisty and are resistant to being held by staff for weigh-ins or other necessary procedures. Nursing bouts are frequent and both are eating very well. JoJo continues to show excellent, attentive maternal care.
What the birth means for the Sumatran tiger Species Survival Plan (SSP)*
The birth of the cubs is very significant for the SSP. Only one Sumatran tiger birth occurred in North American zoos last year to date. Zoos have been struggling to breed tigers because of an aging tiger population, a limited number of breeding animals and a low birth rate. The current North American population of Sumatran tigers consists of only 31 males and 24 females in 27 institutions. In order to maintain a genetically, viable pool, the population must grow.

Animals are used to teach students about survival skills Jan. 31, 2003 By Karyn Brodsky
Post-Tribune correspondent MUNSTER — It has long been believed that visual aids are helpful when teaching children. So how about when the visual aids are live? A number of exotic animals were shown to kindergarten through fifth-grade students at Ernest R. Elliott Elementary School to demonstrate how animals sense their surroundings and use that information for survival. Presenter John Oliver introduced the children to his personal pets, including a legless lizard from Afghanistan, a South American chinchilla, a South American green tree iguana, a South American red-footed tortoise, an African Pygmy albino hedgehog, and a common brown boa constrictor. Though all the animals represented species that live in the wild, most of Oliver’s were raised in captivity. “Animals adapt to situations and are a lot smarter than we think,” said Oliver.
