"This money will help people with non-disaster related economic emergencies so they will not become homeless or go hungry," said Kenneth O. Burris, Jr., regional director for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Region IV office in Atlanta. "The program is one of the best examples of a public/private partnership working to help people who truly need help." Each year the Emergency Food and Shelter Program National Board develops a formula for distributing the funds based on the national unemployment and poverty rates. The EFSP National Board is composed of representatives from the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, Council of Jewish Federations, The United Way, and The National Council of Churches. A representative from the Federal Emergency Management Agency chairs the National Board. A local board in each county or city jurisdiction receiving EFSP funds determines how they will be spent. This may include such things as providing food, in the form of served meals or groceries; lodging in a mass shelter or hotel; one month's rent or mortgage payment; one month's utility bill; or minimal repairs to allow a mass feeding or sheltering facility to function during the program year. Except for the chairmanship, the composition of the local board mirrors the National Board.

Wyoming Key State Education Policies on K-12 Education This CCSSO report is designed to inform policymakers and educators about the current status of key education policies across the fifty states that define and shape elementary and secondary education in public schools. The report is part of a continuing series by the Council's Division of State Services and Technical Assistance on state education indicators and state policies. The Council began reporting on trends in state education policies in the 1980s, when most states legislatures and boards of education approved policy intiatives aimed at improving the quality of K-12 education. When this series began, CCSSO collected and reported 50-state information on policies regarding teacher programs, school time, and student attendance. In the 1990's, other categories of policies were added to the report including state content standards and curriculum, teacher assessments, and school leader/administrator licensure. Sources This report provides policy information for the 50 states and DoDEA as of Spring 2002. The current report is the seventh in the series. State policy information was obtained from a variety of sources. State education staff reported on policies through a survey administered in the spring of 2002 by staff of the CCSSO Division of State Services and Technical Assistance. The state Education Information Advisory Committee (EIAC) representatives approved the survey and served as the point of contact for each state.
