The Council on Child Abuse and Neglect offered the first multi-disciplinary, field-specific seminar in the state in 1976. This event, started in a local church with 50 participants, has grown into a three day annual conference attended by more than 800 professionals and is highly respected throughout the Southeast. The conference exposes front-line workers to national, regional and local experts presenting "state of the art" information. In 1978, a Parent Aide program was initiated. This intensive home visitation program was the first paraprofessional, family-centered, home based prevention program of support and education for maltreating parents. The program was initially offered for Richland County residents, but is now offered in the four-county Midlands area. More than 2500 families have participated in this program since its inception.
