LINKS U.S. Department of Education State Departments of Education Regional Educational Laboratories Other Educational Organizations SERVE, directed by Dr. John R. Sanders, is an education organization with the mission to promote and support the continuous improvement of educational opportunities for all learners in the Southeast. The organization’s commitment to continuous improvement is manifest in an applied research-to-practice model that drives all of its work. Building on theory and craft knowledge, SERVE staff develop tools and processes designed to assist practitioners and policymakers with their work, ultimately, to raise the level of student achievement in the region. Evaluation of the impact of these activities combined with input from affected stakeholders expands SERVE’s knowledge base and informs future research. This vigorous and practical approach to research and development is supported by an experienced staff strategically located throughout the region. This staff is highly skilled in providing needs-assessment services, conducting applied research in schools, and developing processes, products, and programs that inform educators and increase student achievement. In the last three years, in addition to its basic research and development work with over 170 southeastern schools, SERVE staff provided technical assistance and training to more than 18,000 teachers and administrators across the region.

C ONTINUING E DUCATION An event 200 years in the making! Increasingly, business, industry, and professional associations are requiring their constituents to return to school to maintain a high level of currency in their field. The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a system that documents participation in non-credit courses. In 1968, the National Task Force to Study the Feasibility and Implementation of a Uniform Unit for the Measurement of Non-Credit Continuing Education Programs was established to determine the need for recognizing the efforts of individuals who participate in non-credit activities. Since 1970, when the Task Force issued recommendations, several states have adopted the CEU. These include Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Virginia. The University of South Carolina is one of many individual universities to adopt the CEU to document its non-credit continuing education activities. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools is the first regional accrediting agency to require that all member institutions use the CEU to document non-credit special activities. RESIDENTIAL EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL STAFF:
Greeting! I'm Vicki L. Gist , Assistant Director of the Residential Education office. I am a native of Union, South Carolina with a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a master's degree in Higher Education Administration, both from the University of South Carolina, Columbia. My previous professional experiences include work in Judicial and Safety programs and Multicultural Student Affairs. Additionally, I spent a summer at Dartmouth as the first graduate intern for a co-sponsored program between the Office of Residential Life (as the Coordinator of Summer Staff and Programs), and the Amos Tuck School of Business (as the Coordinator of Residential Life for the LEAD Summer Business Institute). I joined the professional staff of the Residential Education office in July of 1998 as the Area Director for West Campus, and Coordinator for Multicultural Education.
A large part of my work involves supervision of the professional Community Directors who live in the residence halls, coordination and implementation of the selection and training programs for our live-in student staff (Undergraduate Advisors and Program Liaisons), providing direction for the office's Academic Affinity and Special Interest programs, and working with staff and students to create learning opportunities for our residents. Professionally, my interests include multicultural education and leadership development, and the things that keep me happy are reading, listening to music, shopping and laughing. My office on the 3rd floor of Gerry Hall feel free to stop by and chat.

Developing healthy children and parent leadership skills.
Mission
The Southeastern Center seeks:
  • To generate and diffuse knowledge necessary for culturally competent family support and parent leadership programs (especially those focusing on infancy and early childhood) in the region.
    To provide high-quality
continuing education, technical assistance, and network development for family support providers, policy makers, and advocates in the region.
To serve as a focal point for studies and discussions that may improve the demonstrable efficacy, efficiency, and conceptual clarity of family support and parent leadership programs.

About the Center

Recognizing the special significance of support for families of young children in promoting their healthy development, many national and state organizations have recently launched major initiatives with such a purpose. Perhaps one of the most ambitious of these is Healthy Families America, the initiative of Prevent Child Abuse America (formerly the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse) to support home visitation for families of infants and toddlers.

Improving Reading in South Carolina: The South Carolina Reading Initiative (SCRI)
Many teachers have embraced the SCRI program, which requires a three-year commitment by teachers. Teachers are excited about what they are reading and learning, how they are improving as instructors, and how their classrooms are changing as a result of the initiative. "Due to the SCRI program, teachers and students have recaptured the true essence of what school and learning is about," says Betty Scott, a School Literacy Coach at St. Marks Elementary in Williamsburg County, South Carolina.
