SC SHRAB Strategic Plan, 2000-2005 The following are the key elements of the SC SHRAB’s strategic plan to advance the state’s historical records programs and preserve South Carolina’s documentary heritage. It is much more than a plan for the Board, but is rather one for South Carolina. As such, it requires cooperation and collaboration from all the state’s historical organizations and institutions and from the widest range of the state’s citizens and leaders. The Board identified six equally important priorities and developed related goals, set objectives, and established indicators for measuring performance. It will review progress regularly and will disseminate the results widely through its annual and other reports. A full, illustrated, version of the state plan, Into the 21 st Century: A Plan for South Carolina’s Historical Records, 2000-2005 , contains detailed background on the planning process and findings and needs.

    Strategic Plan
The evolution of McKissick Museum over the past twenty years into one of the largest university museums in the southeast is reflected in its commitment to establish and achieve strong long-term goals. In particular, the Museum's dual emphasis on programs dedicated to southern vernacular culture and graduate level education has given it a distinctive role among the many regional museums. Although McKissick was only established in its current building in 1976, the collections and some programs date back to the early 19th century and the beginnings of the South Carolina College. With this rich history and contemporary strengths it is understandable that the emphasis of the strategic activities for the coming year are in making the institutional resources, including staff expertise, holdings, and programs, better known. Through the many months of planning activities during the two previous years the staff established five areas of administrative and programmatic jurisdiction in which to ground the five-year goals and objectives. The goals and specific activities will be evaluated and reformulated during the 1999-2000 fiscal year.

    What Is Forest Health Protection?
    Who We Are
Forest Health Protection (FHP) traces its roots to the early 1960's. Plagued by serious insect and disease outbreaks, such as southern pine beetle, chestnut blight, gypsy moth and fusiform rust, the Forest Service saw the need for a specialized unit designed to work exclusively on pest problems related to forest resource productivity and management. The unit provides technical assistance in the prevention, detection, evaluation, and suppression of forest insect and disease pest problems. In addition, expertise is available in the areas of seed orchard pest management, nursery disease problems, pesticide use, protection of wood in use, and remote sensing for monitoring insect populations and/or damage. FHP is comparable to other specialized Forest Service units, such as engineering, recreation, and wildlife. The most significant difference is that we provide forest health assistance not only to managers of National Forests, but to managers of all forested lands.

Carolina Business ~ Why It Works
ecently Forbes and Forbes.com announced the Forbes/Milken list of Best Places for Business and Careers for 2002. They rank 200 metropolitan areas based on the latest government data for employment and wage growth over one- and five-year periods. New to this year’s ranking process was a job momentum category that tracks employment during the first quarter of 2002 to gauge how the metro areas are handling the effects of 9/11 and the economy. Eleven Carolina towns made the list, a remarkable achievement until one stops to consider all the reasons business works in the Carolinas. Even now, in these times of economic fluctuation and uncertainty, this remains a great place to start a business, expand a business, or make a career shift.
