Pat Conroy's Bio Pat Conroy's Books Biography/Background Pat Conroy was born on October 26, 1945, in Atlanta, Georgia, to a young career military officer from Chicago and a Southern beauty from Alabama, whom Pat often credits for his love of language. He was the first of seven children.
Since the family had to move many times to different military bases around the South, Pat changed schools frequently, finally attending the Citadel Military Academy in Charleston, South Carolina, upon his father's insistence. While still a student, he wrote and then published his first book, The Boo, a tribute to a beloved teacher.
After graduation, Conroy taught English in Beaufort, where he met and married a young woman with two children, a widow of the Vietnam War. He then accepted a job teaching underprivileged children in a one-room schoolhouse on Daufuskie Island, a remote island off the South Carolina shore. After a year, Pat was fired for his unconventional teaching practicessuch as his unwillingness to allow corporal punishment of his studentsand for his general lack of respect for the school's administration. Conroy evened the score when he exposed the racism and appalling conditions his students endured with publication of The Water is Wide in 1972. The book won Conroy a humanitarian award from the National Education Association and was made into the feature film

    Soldiers aim for the classroom
July 31, 2002 BY ASSOCIATED PRESS CLEMSON, S.C. The next campaign for some military veterans is for the classroom. The South Carolina Troops-to-Teachers Coalition, a statewide group headquartered at Clemson University, is launching a pilot program to offer substantive help to soldiers who may consider teaching as a post-military career. The group plans to expand the program nationally next year. The coalition will provide advice, coursework, training and field experience that will lead to certification and placement, according to Nancy C. Dunlap, project leader and associate director of the school of education at Clemson. University faculty will develop a curriculum based on what teachers need to know and do to become successful teachers. And prospective teachers will work in paid internships with mentor teachers. The program is directed especially to commissioned and non-commissioned officers with a bachelor's degree or higher. "Military personnel represent a wealth of talent, experience, diversity, knowledge, expertise, skills, and world view," Dunlap said. The new recruits can help close the gap in an expected teacher shortage, especially at rural and inner-city schools, she said. And they will provide more of what schools are now missing: black, Hispanic, and male teachers. They would be mature, physically fit and drug-free role models for youngsters.

    Exemplary Practices in Teacher Recruitment
    South Carolina
The South Carolina Center for Teacher Recruitment (SCCTR) is the oldest and most effective teacher recruitment center in the nation. It began as a center that piloted a Teacher Cadet Program in four high schools and now operates 12 programs aimed at identifying, attracting, placing and retaining well-qualified teachers in South Carolina classrooms. The SCCTR also assists state and local leaders in addressing the issue of teacher recruitment and retention. State leadership for career/technical education in South Carolina is working with the SCCTR staff to make career/technical teachers a target group and to develop a strategy for these teachers. South Carolina is anticipating hiring as many as 250 career/technical teachers over the next four years. The SCCTR target groups are middle and high school students, college students and adults. The Center provides these major programs: Minority Recruitment — This program offers activities to increase the number of minorities entering education. It includes a partnership with the South Carolina Association of Black School Educators and the Eisenhower Consortium for Mathematics and Science Education. ProTeam Middle School Program — This program is designed to interest middle school students in the education profession before they become "turned off" to the possibility of a career in teaching. Participating in teacher-like activities is essential to the program.

    Abstract:
The nation is facing a shortage of teachers; the military has personnel with wonderful talents and abilities to become teachers. What an opportunity to build a bridge! This unique project is designed to provide military personnel with the skills and knowledge to become teachers when they retire. Participants, regardless of where in the world they are deployed, can begin their coursework while still on active duty. Upon retirement, they will enter a one-year internship in South Carolina Schools. This program is the result of 3 years of development by the South Carolina Troops-to-Teachers (T3) Coalition; the Coalition consists of 4 universities, 5 state agencies, and IBM/Lotus. The program consists of ten modules that were crafted by university faculty based on what teachers need to know and be able to do.
Military personnel represent a wealth of talent, experience, diversity, knowledge, expertise, skills, and world views. What opportunities exist to install this leadership and talent in the inner-city and rural schools most in need! And our new cadre of teachersour military recruitscan "be all that they can be" yet again.

Schools for children of military members stationed at various bases in the United States were already well-established. First administered by the military branches they served, the growing number of schools was soon transferred to civilian managers, then organized into two separate but parallel systems: the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) overseas, and the Department of Defense Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) in the United States. In 1994 the two systems were brought together under an umbrella agency, the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA). Organization The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is a civilian agency of the U.S. Department of Defense. It is headed by a director who oversees all agency functions from DoDEA headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. DoDEA's schools are divided into three areas, each of which is managed by an area director. Within each of these three areas, schools are organized into districts headed by superintendents.

The United States of America is a failed proposition and like all governments that consolidate power into a few hands, the power corrupts and degenerates. The Constitution has been ignored by national politicians and appointed judges and they do not recognise any limit to their power or authority. Laws are passed and programs implemented to control ever facet of daily life while taxes approaching 50% of earned income are extracted from the needs of daily life.

A former schoolteacher and an attorney, Inez is committed to raising the quality of education in South Carolina through comprehensive and sustained reform. Her priorities include raising academic standards through accountability, making sure every child starts school ready to learn, improving the quality of the State’s principals and teachers, ensuring that schools are safe and healthy places for learning, and increasing the support of parents and communities in public schools. As Superintendent, Inez is leading the way on these important issues. Her first term has been marked by rising SAT scores, falling violent crime rates in our schools, and more children testing ready for school than ever before in the State’s history. Her accomplishments include leading the successful effort to provide over $750 million for school construction without raising taxes, reducing class size, creating more alternative schools, raising teachers’ salaries, and providing more guidance counselors and resource officers for our schools. She created the first-ever School Leadership Executive Institute to train our principals and superintendents and helped Governor Hodges launch the landmark First Steps to School Readiness initiative to ensure that every child starts school ready to learn.

Holtz will speak to Gamecocks about Iraq By Brett Jensen / Independent-Mail
    March 19, 2003
"It’s a serious time because you don’t know what’s going to happen," Holtz said. "I hear all these (people) saying they’re going to surrender. I’m going to tell you this — you go tell (Tennessee coach) Phillip Fulmer he’s got until Wednesday to vacate that job up there. I wonder how you get that done." Holtz has plenty of experience to draw upon when talking to his team about war. He was an assistant coach at various schools throughout most of the Vietnam War, and served as head coach at N.C. State from 1972-72, which were the final years of the war. "In 1968, we had a great football team (at Ohio State) ? and I remember we went up to Wisconsin, and I’ll never forget, the students had taken over the administration building," Holtz said. "There was a big riot and everything else. The same thing was happening at Ohio State to a certain extent. But it was a very turbulent time." Holtz served as an military reservist and in May of 2001, he participated in a six-day tour of the Middle East sponsored by the U.S.O. Holtz said he spoke to troops stationed in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
