Abbreviation:
ND North Dakota got its name from the Dakota division of the Sioux Indians who lived on the plains before the Europeans arrived. "Dakota" means "friend." In 1889, North Dakota was admitted to the Union as the 39th state. On the same day, South Dakota was admitted. North Dakota lies in the center of the North American continent. It is mainly a farm state and most of its industries (food processing and farm equipment) are connected to farming. Farms and ranches stretch from the flat Red River Valley, in the east, across rolling plains, to the rugged Badlands in the west. North Dakota's crisp autumn days attract hunters to streams and lakes where migrating fowl pause on their way south. Summer visitors to the state enjoy the exciting rodeos that are held in numerous communities and colorful Indian ceremonies that are conducted on reservations in the state. North Dakota erhielt seinen Namen von dem Dakota-Stamm der Sioux Indianer, die vor der Ankunft der Europäer in der Prärie lebten. "Dakota" bedeutet "Freund". 1889 wurde North Dakota als 39. Bundesstaat aufgenommen. Zeitgleich wurde auch South Dakota zum Bundesstaat. North Dakota

Geography Geographic Center of the U.S.
Source: U.S. Geological Survey, Dept. of the Interior There is no generally accepted definition of geographic center and no uniform method for determining it. Following the U.S. Geological Survey, the geographic center of an area is defined here as the center of gravity of the surface, or that point on which the surface would balance if it were a plane of uniform thickness. All localities in the following list, therefore, are approximate. No marked or monumented point has been established by any government agency as the geographic center of either the 50 states, the conterminous U.S., or the North American continent. A monument was erected in Lebanon, KS, the conterminous U.S. center, by a group of citizens. A cairn in Rugby, ND, marks the center of the North American continent. Nicknames: South Dakota was long known as the Sunshine State because it's state motto, which appeared on the state flag, was "Sunshine State." In 1980, the motto, flag, and nickname was changed to "The Mount Rushmore State" because it was felt that South Dakota couldn't compete with the other Sunshine State, Florida, which enhanced its reputation for sunshine with the nickname Orange State . The nickname Coyote State was actually inspired by a swift horse. Other old nicknames are

Geography Rivers are the outstanding geographic features of the five Minnesota counties (Hennepin, Ramsey, Anoka, Dakota and Washington) included in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. Here the Mississippi pours over the only waterfall in its entire length and is joined by the Minnesota River from the west and the St. Croix from the northeast. A lock now brings watercraft past the Falls of St. Anthony to the upper harbor, in downtown Minneapolis.
The Falls of St. Anthony, given its present name by French missionary Louis Hennepin, is shown in this painting by the artist Henry Lewis as it looked in the 1840s.
Prized by Euro-Americans for its water power, the falls became a saw-milling center and the nucleus of an industrial city in the 1850s. Drawing from Harpers Monthly Vol. XXX No. 1534.
In the 1870s and 1880s sawmills at the falls gave way to flour mills, and Minneapolis became famous as the world's breadbasket. Drawing from Harpers Monthly Vol. XXX No. 1534.
Below the falls, the banks of the river rise steeply, forming a narrow gorge, and it is joined by Minnehaha Creek. This stream rises in a cluster of lakes to the west of Minneapolis. As it approaches the Mississippi, it pours over a scenic waterfall.

For what geographic areas does the Census Bureau produce estimates?
In addition to the Nation, the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, PEP produces estimates for census regions and divisions, counties and equivalents, incorporated places, minor civil divisions, consolidated cities, and metropolitan areas.
    Census Regions and Divisions
    Counties (and equivalents)
    Minor Civil Divisions
Legally defined county subdivisions are referred to as minor civil divisions (MCDs.) MCDs are the primary divisions of a county. They comprise both governmentally functioning entities that is, those with elected officials who provide services and raise revenues and nonfunctioning entities that exist primarily for administrative purposes, such as election districts. Twenty-eight states and Puerto Rico have MCDs. However, the MCDs function as general purpose governmental units in all or part of only twenty states. Within these twenty states, PEP produces estimates for all governmentally functioning MCDs and for nonfunctioning MCDs in counties that contain at least one functioning MCD. The legal powers and functions of MCDs vary from state to state. Most of the MCDs in twelve states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin) serve as general-purpose local governments. In the remaining eight states for which PEP produces MCD level estimates (Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Dakota) the MCDs, for the most part, perform less of a governmental role and are less well known locally, even though they are active governmental units.

    Population Estimates: Concepts and Geography
What is a population estimate? The Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program (PEP) produces July 1 estimates for years after the last published decennial census (1990), as well as for past decades. Existing data series such as births, deaths, Federal tax returns, medicare enrollment, and immigration, are used to update the decennial census base counts. PEP estimates are used in Federal funding allocations, in setting the levels of national surveys, and in monitoring recent demographic changes. A methodology reference accompanies most of our population estimates offerings. How are estimates different from projections? There is not a distinct dichotomy between population estimates and population projections, but there are some differences in time reference and derivation. Estimates usually are for the past, while projections typically are for future dates. Estimates generally use existing symptomatic data, for example, (births, deaths, migration), collected from various sources. Projections must assume future trends for fertility, mortality, and other demographic processes. At the Census Bureau, the population projections use the latest available estimates as starting points. In our current product offerings the user may see both an estimate and a projection available for the same reference date, which may not agree because they were produced at different times. In such cases, estimates are the preferred data.

    Description
The legends of Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull and the Arikara, Cheyenne and Sioux Indian tribes still reverberate across the land.
In 1805, into this unexplored territory we now call South Dakota, the Lewis and Clark expedition wound its way up the Missouri River on their epic journey to the Pacific Northwest.
As the geography of America expanded, and details of this new land (west of the Mississippi) spread to the east, settlers by the thousands arrived in the Dakotas.
The Indian's sacred land was now violated, and their understandable reaction was bloody and severe.
When gold was discovered in the Black Hills in 1876, the land was inundated with miners and prospectors. The Indians rebelled again, but were eventually defeated, and relegated to reservation life.
This large slice of the American West is today home to huge cattle ranches, productive farms and modern cities.
The Badlands and Black Hills, including Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Monument are major attractions, and the state welcomes millions of annual visitors. Read more about it here!

    Online AP Courses
    Are Not the Answer

By. Phyllis Kuehn Professor of Educational Research
California State University Fresno, Calif FRESNO STATE Teachers in South Dakota say that it was a lack of motivation and discipline that led to a dismal completion rate for high-school students taking online Advanced Placement courses . A more important factor is that many students who are college-bound are in reality not prepared for the language tasks (reading, writing, listening, note taking) that they face at the college level. Both native speakers of English and second-language learners may have good spoken-English skills, but many despite success in high-school studies have low academic-language proficiency. Academic language, the kind of language used in college textbooks and lectures, is distinctly different from the spoken language of everyday social interactions. Sentences are more complex, and vocabulary is more sophisticated and abstract. Students who lack good academic language, as is the case with nearly 50 percent of the students entering my institutional system, have trouble comprehending texts, lectures, and tests.

Geography 320 US and Canada Site and Situation city assignment This paper is to be about 2 pages + bibliography. Double-spaced, 1" margins, typed. Please have each city on its own page! No more than a page per city should be necessary. We are looking for the reason thei city was founded where it was; what its relationship is/was with the surrounding area (situation); if this has changed since its founding, how and why. I do not need to know the Chamber of Commerce hype.
You are to choose 2 cities from the list at the right and analyze the city's site and situation. You will need to look at a variety of maps(see below) and both zoom in and zoom out to look at the city's physical features (site morphology) and its relative location and hinterlands (situation). I have emphasized location, site and situation in class. You should know what they are by now, but just in case:
Site: This extends the location description to include the ground a town occupies. The physical features of the landscape favor the placement of towns. It also allows for classifying towns according to physical features: rivertowns, gateways, natural resources. Site can also include the street layout, the demographic patterns and city functions or zones.
