South Dakota shows some of the earliest geologic history of the continent in the rock formations of the ancient Black Hills and in the Badlands. In the area between the White River and the south fork of the Cheyenne, the Badlands display in their deeply eroded clay gullies not only colorful, fantastic shapes, but also a wealth of easily accessible marine and land fossils (the Badlands National Monument preserves the area for its startling scenery and geologic interest). From east to west the state rises some 6,000 ft (1,829 m) to Harney Peak (7,242 ft/2,207 m) in the Black Hills, highest point in the United States E of the Rockies. Among the state's attractions are Badlands and Wind Cave national parks, Jewel Cave National Monument, and the famous gigantic carvings of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial (see

What is Ag In The Classroom?
Ag In The Classroom is a nationwide program designed to help students develop an awareness and understanding of our food and fiber system, and how agriculture impacts our daily lives. Ag In The Classroom (AITC) provides training and resources to use agriculture as a vehicle to teach across existing curriculum. Ag In The Classroom does not attempt to add anything to the existing school curriculum. Instead, materials are designed to enhance the subjects that teachers are already required to cover. For example, science standards such as soils can be discussed with an emphasis on how soils affect our food abundance and the characteristics of soil. Geography lessons may cover where different crops are grown in the world, and how food is transported from one area of the world to another. South Dakota's Ag In The Classroom is a non-profit corporation whose members are individuals and organizations with an interest in teaching our youth about agriculture.

    http://www.usgennet.org/usa/sd/state/whos_who/beadle.html
    GEN. W. H. H. BEADLE
SOUTH DAKOTA'S "GRAND OLD MAN." General William Henry Harrison Beadle was born in the rugged new west, in a forest region where great oaks, walnut and poplars grew, near the Wabash river, the route for nearly all the commerce of the early days; when the houses were mostly of logs and all the life around him was active and vigorous; drank from the cool, clear springs with a limestone element in them to develop bones and stature, and used to labor to the extent of his physical powers; and, observing the ambitious efforts of his enterprising father and mother, his life was shaped for execution and sucess. Such were the environments and stimulating conditions that life in boyhood and manhood gave to Dr. Wm. H. H. Beadle, and prepared him for his great service to the territory of Dakota and the state of South Dakota. The Beadles and Brights became near neighbors, and there General Beadle's parents were married, after the fathers had made two or three trips with flatboats, loaded with produce, to New Orleans. They moved to western Indiana, and the father who was a master hand with the broadaxe, built with his own hands a common but comfortable hewed log house near the northwest corner of Parke county, and in that William was born January 1, 1838, the fourth child and first son of the family. The woods were close about the home, and the deer, wild turkeys, squirrels and pheasants were abundant in them. The life was simple, the food plain but good, and the clothing was spun, woven and made by his mother.

SOUTH DAKOTA, one of the West North Central states of the U.S., bounded on the N by North Dakota , on the E by Minnesota and Iowa , on the S by Nebraska, and on the W by Wyoming and Montana . The Missouri R. forms part of the SE boundary. South Dakota entered the Union on Nov. 2, 1889, as the 40th state. With fertile soils and extensive grazing lands, South Dakota has always had an economy dominated by farming and ranching. In the early 1990s tourism and other services were of increasing importance to the state; visitors are attracted by the great scenic landscapes and caverns of the Black Hills. The name Dakota is derived from a Sioux Indian term. It was first applied to a U.S. territory in 1861, and when North and South Dakota were formed, the people of both areas chose to keep the name. South Dakota is called the Coyote State and the Sunshine State.
