Geography South Dakota ranks 17th in size among the 50 states. It encompasses 77,121 square miles, with only 10 people per square mile.
Sprawling prairies, fertile farmland and glacial lakes dominate the landscape in eastern South Dakota. Prairies and ranchland are common in central South Dakota. Mountains grace the western skyline, and in the southwest, striking Badlands formations rise abruptly from the surrounding prairie.
At 7,242 feet, Harney Peak in the Black Hills is the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains in the continental United States.
The Missouri River runs through the central and southeastern part of the state, creating shoreline that rivals the California coast. Lakes, formed by retreating glaciers thousands of years ago, cover the northeastern corner of South Dakota.

Enter a City or US Zip: S outh Dakota is famous for the scenic wonders of the Badlands, the Black Hills, and, of course, Mt. Rushmore. Prairie, grassland, and farmland cover 90% of the state, where buffalo once ranged in herds of thousands. D ynamic historical figures like Lewis and Clark, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Sitting Bull, and General George Custer have all added to the colorful past of South Dakota. When Custer's military band found gold in the Black Hills in 1874, word of the discovery reached back east to Chicago, and the Gold Rush followed. By 1876, prospecting towns like Dead Tree Gulch exploded with fortune seekers lured by the glitter of gold. Today, gold continues to be mined in the state, and South Dakota's Homestake Mine remains one of the largest gold producers in the U.S. THE NAME: North and South Dakota were one territory until 1889. Dakota was named for the Dakota, Sioux tribe which lived in the region. Dakota is the Sioux word for "friends" or "allies." Source: Shearer, Benjamin F. and Barbara S.
