Cheju Do - Culture C heju Island is the smallest province of the republic. Oval in shape, Cheju Island measures 40 miles (64 km) from east to west and 16 miles (26 km) from north to south. The island is known as a place of fantasy or mystery is most beautiful island in Korea and is located in the southwest sea of the Korean peninsula and is highlighted for its uniqueness. It is a tourist resort (with no other industry) with all conditions for a resort area. Cheju Island, also known as the "Island of the Gods". The island offers visitors a wide range of activities: hiking on Halla-san (South Korea's highest peak), catching sunrises and sunsets over the ocean, viewing majestic waterfalls, riding horses, or just lying around on the sandy beaches. The mountain Halla and surrounding area is a national park. Hundreds of crater-formed hills from which volcanic material once flowed, seaside precipices with waterfalls, and lava tunnels are international sightseeing attractions. Tourism is an important business on Cheju Island with its abundance of natural attractions. There are many parks, tourist sites and privately established recreational spots, combining to support Cheju's image as a traveller's paradise. Cheju Sculpture Park, located at the base of Mt. Sanban, is a virtual museum of natural "artwork". Over 160 carvings are displayed in this park where nature itself becomes an expansive exhibition hall spreading from Mountain Halla to the coast. Within the park are many ponds, an observation tower, souvenir centers and children's amusement facilities, providing additional destinations after time spent appreciating the park's collection of sculptures.

New Framework Agreement for Trade and Co-operation In December 1998, the Commission adopted a Communication to the Council and Parliament on future EU-ROK relations. This identified areas in which the relationship might be enhanced (keeping up economic reform momentum; improving market access; working together towards a new WTO round; stepping up economic co-operation; bolstering ROK as an advocate of liberal democracy in Asia by enhancing political dialogue; co-operating to reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula). The Council adopted the Conclusions broadly endorsing the Commission’s analysis on 19 July 1999. The Framework Agreement and its attached Political declaration were signed in October 1996. It is a mixed agreement with both the participation of the European Commission and the Member States on the side of the European Union. All parties had to ratify the agreement individually before it could enter into force. On 19 March 2000, the Council adopted the Decision to conclude the Framework Agreement which entered into force on the 1 April 2001.

    Culture
Korean society is based on the tenets of Confucianism, a system of ethics developed in China around 500 BC. Confucianism is big on devotion and respect - for parents, family, friends and those in positions of authority. Confucius also emphasised justice, peace, education, reform and humanitarianism. Many Koreans attribute their country's remarkable success in recent decades to this attitude. In modern Korean society, Confucianism is most noticeable in relations between people. The Five Relationships prescribe behaviour between ruler and subject, father and son, husband and wife, old and young, and between friends. If you fall outside any of these relationships, you do not, effectively, exist. Many travellers to Korea find the locals rude: they're probably not; chances are they just haven't noticed you. Once you're introduced to someone, you'll fall within the rules for friends and things will start looking up. The South Koreans have turned their hand to just about any art form you can name. Traditional music is similar to that of Japan and China, with an emphasis on strings. The two main forms are the stately chongak and the folksier minsogak . Among the folk dances are drum dances ( mugo - a hectic, lively court dance where the participants wear drums around their necks), mask dances (

news Plans to promote South Korea's dog meat culture suspended
    (01/14/2002) (Agencies)
A scheduled rally Monday to promote dog meat in South Korea was suspended after organizers could not find a venue because of protests by animal rights activists. Hundreds of dog meat restaurateurs had planned to hold the rally at an auditorium belonging to a telecommunications office in Ilsan near Seoul but were forced to suspend it after being denied access to it. The local office of KT Corp., South Korea's largest telephone operator, told the ralliers last weekend that it could not lease its facility because of hundreds of protest phone calls. The rally was intended as a protest against an expected government crackdown on dog meat restaurants ahead of this year's soccer World Cup to be co-hosted by South Korea and Japan from May 31-June 30. Japanese don't eat dog meat. KT said it had agreed to lease its facility in November only after being told that the rally was to promote start-up businesses. There was no mention of dog meat, it said. ``It's nonsense that a government-affiliated company let its facility be used to promote dog meat,'' Yoon Han-kyong, an animal rights activist, said on SBS-TV.

More than half of the households in Korea have cheap broadband Internet access. With easy high-speed service, this has become a nation of devoted gamers. The PC baang "The Korean game market started to grow in 1997," explains Sung-Hwan Park of International Cyber Marketing. "Everyone was looking for something else to enjoy because the economy was so bad. The Internet got really popular and so did 'Starcraft.' Young people started to play and it has gotten really big." South Koreans are generally stuffed into small, overcrowded city apartments and are always looking for an entertaining escape. Enter the PC room or "PC baang" South Korea's equivalent to gaming cafes. These are places for Koreans of all ages to get online and battle over high-speed networks.

    Author:
    Publication: ZENIT.org
Date: February 23, 2001 Catholic Church Warns About Its Faulty Religious Ideas The Church in South Korea is warning Catholics about the Ki culture, a New Age-style movement that mixes health programs with faulty religious ideas. Last month, Seoul's Auxiliary Bishop Peter Kang sent a memorandum to all clergy and religious in the archdiocese, warning about the ambiguity and danger posed by Ki culture. Bishop Kang is concerned about Catholics, including clergy and religious, who go to Ki Centers, and he emphasized the need for discernment. "When Ki formation touches the religious realm, going beyond its dimension which is health promotion, it becomes dangerous," the bishop wrote. "If they use Ki training as a means of improving health, then I have nothing to say," he continued. "However, if they insist that people can reach salvation by themselves, this is a serious mistake, because salvation cannot be obtained by any human efforts or techniques, it can only be [received from] God." His memorandum further stated: "Priests and religious who have contact with Ki culture, believing that it helps them for meditation or health, should act with discernment, recalling that their attitude can bring confusion to the Christian life."

In addition, South Korea is an active competitor in worldwide sporting events, with many first-class sporting facilities around Seoul and Pusan.
Printing and Literature One of Korea's great achievements was the 15th-century invention of Hangul, the Korean phonetic alphabet. Hangul is relatively easy to learn, with 24 letters that are combined into blocks of syllables. The accessibility of Hangul has contributed to Korea's high literacy rate. Another great Korean innovation was the first use of movable metal type, in 1234. Korea's long literary history grew not only from its innovations in printing, but through the tradition of telling folk tales and legends at festivals and other gatherings. These stories outlined the kingdom's mythical origins and stressed Korean values. The National Folklore Museum in Seoul preserves an extensive collection of Korean cultural and folklore relics.

Business Attire GREETINGS AND COURTESIES BUSINESS ETHIC AND FRAMEWORK Koreans are generally highly disciplined and hard-working, but they can also be distrustful of outsiders and extremely nationalistic. Korean behavior is largely determined by Confucianism, which teaches respect for superiors, duty to family, loyalty to friends, humility, sincerity, and courtesy. Workers generally respect the companies they work for and are driven to help their business succeed. Among coworkers, people of higher status and age are respected by those beneath them, and are deferred to in speech and action. Business friends trust and respect each other, and help each other succeed. Employees work hard and are generally efficient and productive. Management styles are a combination of Confucianism and Western behavior, depending on an individual's background. Generally, business is conducted formally, with great value placed on punctuality, efficiency, and thriftiness. DECISION MAKING Koreans make it a point never to act as individuals but to have group cohesion. Before any action is taken or a decision made, there must be consensus from everyone involved. This is reached by circulating written memos that must receive everyone's approval. Koreans try not to say no or deliver bad news. If a project or negotiation develops problems, no one will want to admit there are difficulties and it may be necessary to look for subtle signs that something has gone wrong.

Extra Detailed Information on work and life in Korea Korea, while located between two vast powers , China and Japan, has preserved it's own unique character and cultural identity. Korea is a very modern country, offering first world facilities and services and at the same time is steeped in oriental charm. Of all the Asian countries, Korea is one of the best to teach in, as it is part of it's culture to give teachers the greatest respect and foreigners are also given a warm welcome. At present the Korean Government has put an emphasis on the Learning of English and this is one of the reasons why there is such a demand for English Teachers and subsequently good working conditions. Korea is a beautiful country, the countryside is very mountainous and filled with national parks which house enchanting Buddhist Temples. On the other extreme, off the south coast lies many small islands offering white sandy beaches and small fishing villages. The most famous of these, Chedju Island, is often compared to Hawaii. Back to top Culture Korea has kept most of it's ancient culture, which is based on Confucianism.. Because of this, it has a very respectful society and practices the old social etiquette involving bowing and showing courtesy to elders.
