Kim Dae-jung: From prison to president
By Carol Clark
CNN Interactive Kim Dae-jung has called for an "electronic democracy," using the Internet as a tool for public participation (CNN) South Korean President Kim Dae-jung endured a run-in with a 14-ton truck, a kidnapping, repeated arrests, beatings, exile and a death sentence during his decades-long struggle as an opposition leader. After losing three election bids for president, he came back from retirement to finally win the office at age 72, pledging major democratic reforms. He is sometimes referred to as "the Nelson Mandela of Asia."

Japan and China square off over war history
By Paul Eckert and Teruaki Ueno HANOI (Reuters) - Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan told Japanese counterpart Makiko Tanaka on Tuesday that Tokyo must end a bitter dispute over Japan's war history to avoid damaging ties between the Asian powers. Tang told Tanaka that Tokyo must "take concrete steps to sincerely and properly settle outstanding problems" over history textbooks and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's plan to visit a controversial war shrine, Chinese spokesman Sun Yuxi said. Tang, emerging after an hour of talks with Tanaka on the sidelines of a regional conference in Hanoi, told reporters: "I clearly urged them to give up" Koizumi's plans to pay homage at Yasukuni Shrine next month. "If Prime Minister Koizumi visits Yasukuni Shrine, it will undoubtedly spark strong anger among the people of China," a Japanese official quoted Tang as telling Tanaka.

History and Government
History: The first civilisation in Korea was centred on the state of Choson which developed in the northwest corner of the peninsula in the second century BC. Choson steadily expanded until it came up against the more advanced Yen, a feudal empire which governed much of northern China. At the beginning of the first century BC, China, now ruled by the Han dynasty, attacked and destroyed Choson and governed the northern part of the peninsula for the next 400 years. To the south, a number of independent rival kingdoms evolved, of which the most important was the Silla in the southeast. In alliance with the Chinese Tang dynasty, which had taken over in northern China in AD 618, the Silla defeated their competitors and created a single political entity in Korea in AD 668 for the first time.
Around AD 870, a wave of rebellions broke out across Silla-controlled territory: this triggered the gradual disintegration of the Silla empire and a period of chaos in which rival forces struggled for control. The eventual victor in the early tenth century was the Koryo dynasty, once vanquished by the Silla, who allied themselves with the Song dynasty in China. The Koryo emulated the Song in establishing an advanced cultural and technological society (including the invention of printing in 1234, two centuries before its discovery in the West).

Asian Games
The modern Asian Games began in 1951, but these international games have their roots in the Far East Championships, a competition primarily between China, Japan and the Philippines between 1913 and 1934. 11 nations and 489 athletes competed in the first games in 1951 in New Delhi. The 1994 games in Hiroshima saw 32 countries win medals. The 1998 Games were held in Bangkok, Thailand in December. The 2002 Games are scheduled to be held in Busan, South Korea. The games are sanctioned by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).

A Role For Russia In Korean Settlement
David Wolff, Senior Scholar, Cold War International History Project at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, asserts that US-Russia cooperation can play a significant role in settlement of the Korean Peninsula, as it will provide security assurances to Pyongyang from a source it trusts more than the US, while providing a stepping stone on the way to expansions and improvements in US-NK ties and renewed cooperation with the IAEA. It points the way toward regional discussions that will not automatically turn into a reprise on Cold War alliances with the US-Japan-SK triangle opposing the Russia-China-NK side. The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the Nautilus Institute. Toward An 'Asian' North Korea
Mindy Kotler, director and founder of the Japan Information Access Project in Washington, DC, asserts that the Bush administration must examine its three fundamental assumptions of North Korea: 1) Kim Jong Il is a gangster and not a legitimate head of state; 2) North Korea is a client state of the People's Republic of China; and 3) North Korea's neighbors are not concerned with another Asian nuclear power. By failing to analyze these assumptions, the Bush administration has hindered a creative response to North Korea's nuclear program.

Rumsfeld gets tough on North Korea
John Gittings in Hong Kong and Suzanne Goldenberg in Washington Tuesday December 24, 2002 The Guardian
Donald Rumsfeld, the US defence secretary, yesterday warned North Korea that America could fight and win two regional conflicts. He advised Pyongyang not to become "emboldened" by the US administration's immediate focus on Iraq. "We are capable of fighting two major regional conflicts. We're capable of winning decisively in one and swiftly defeating in the case of the other, and let there be no doubt about it," Mr Rumsfeld said.
