Astronomy (def.) : Branch of science dedicated to the study of everything in the universe that lies above Earth's atmosphere.
Q: In many articles on astrophysics I have come accross the term space-time quite often. What does it actually mean?
Q: Why can't we see the autumn constellations in the night sky in the spring?
Q: How fast do gravitational waves travel?
Q: How long would it take for scientists to notice the effects of the NGC6240 merger in our galaxy and/or in other galaxies?
Q: Why is our galaxy called the milky way?
Q: If light travels to us from the Sun at 186,000 miles per second and takes 8 minutes, does that mean if I stood 100,000 miles from someone and then switched on a torch they would see it just after I switched it on?
Q: Aren't stars and galaxies are so far away they are regarded as point sources? Then how can that trigonometry be practised?
Q: All the stars and galaxies move, so how sure are we to say that the Crab Nebula is moving at X km/sec in direction Y?
Q: Is our solar system moving or travelling within our galaxy? Is our galaxy travelling or moving in the Universe? If so, how fast?

Q: I have been thinking about the nature of spatial distortion due to matter. If space is distorted are there any other noticeable effects apart from a gravitational field? If we were to "distort" space, is the observable distance through that space just as "long" to an object passing through it and would take the same amount of energy to accelerate it regardless of the distortion? Are there any web links you know of on this subject? Thanks.

    point source catalog

    main menu
Note that this is a local document and not official! The IRAS satellite produced three main data products:
    • the Point Source Catalogue (PSC), with the Faint Source Catalogue (FSC) and the Serendipitous Survey Catalogue (SSC) as by-products
    • the Low Resolution Spectra (LRS spectra)
    • sky images at 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns (not accessible here); the Small Scale Structure Catalogue is a by-product of the images.
The main part of the IRAS mission was scanning the sky using 4 broad-band photometric filters centered at about 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns. Any source that gave a profile on the focal plane detectors sufficiently like the expected "point source profile" in one or more of the filters was noted and then searched for a few hours later (hours confirmation) and again a few weeks later (weeks confirmation). Each weeks-confirmed source was included in the Point Source Catalogue, which contains about 245,889 sources. The PSC data for each filter was converted to a frequency flux density value in Jansky (1.0e-26 Watts per meter squared per Hertz) assuming a spectral index of -1.0. The real flux density can differ from the PSC value by as much as 50% depending upon the real spectral distribution over the filter bandpass. There are "colour correction" factors to allow for this; for a 10000 K blackbody the factors are 1.45, 1.41, 1.32, and 1.09 for the 12, 25, 60, and 100 micron filters where the PSC flux density must be divided by this factor to obtain the actual flux density. This complicates the use of PSC data, especially when a source is detected in only 1 filter. The real flux densities for zero magnitude are 28.3, 6.73, 1.19, and 0.43 Jy for the 4 filters, based upon a 10000 K blackbody source of the luminosity and distance of Vega. Further discussion of the calibration and colour corrections is available in the IRAS Explanatory Supplement (Beichman et al., 1988 [NASA RP-1190]).

Number Question Level Is there any one location in the world that is better for observing than any other? And are there any locations in the U.K. that are better than any other? Are there signs of alien species in space? If the Big Bang theory of the creation of the universe is correct, is the rate of expansion increasing or decreasing? Will it eventually stop expanding and start contracting leading to the collapse of the Universe to a singularity? And then, would this lead to a new Big Bang and a new universe? How fast is the Universe expanding and is it doing so in all directions? If the universe is constantly expanding, and the light from its edge takes billions of years to reach us, how can we ever see the real size of the universe? Hasn't it got bigger by the time we see the light? How is the Hubble constant worked out? What is the temperature of space? If light travelled faster than the speed of light at the big bang how would this affect our view of the universe? The universe is always said to be expanding, but exactly what is it expanding into?

Number Question Level Is space curved? When an animal/plant grows, is more matter coming into the Universe? Does this cause the Universe to expand? What is the diameter of the Milky Way? Why is the Universe expanding? If the furthest reaches of the Universe are expanding at close to the speed of light then their masses will increase. Could this increase in mass, and associated increase in size, explain why the universe is expanding? What is the density of the Universe and the size of the Universe? Why do cepheid variable stars not form in elliptical type galaxies? When space scientists are calculating space craft trajectories do they need to consider the gravitational effect of dark matter ? How many stars are there in the Universe? If there are stars and galaxies in all directions, how come the night sky is not lit up like the sky during the day? Superstring theory involves 10 dimensions. How can we think of 10 dimensions? If light doesn't weigh anything, how can the gravity of a black hole stop it escaping? If everything in the universe is moving, what do we use on Earth to determine our position to everything else?
