Contact: judy.pettus@msfc.nasa.gov Other news releases For Release: May 3, 2001 Release: First experiments from NASA Commercial Space Centers get started on International Space Station The experiments were launched into orbit on April 19 on the Space Shuttle Endeavor on the STS-100 mission, Space Station Flight 6A. The Space Station Expedition Two crew are setting up the three commercial payloads and beginning experiments. These experiments will remain on board the Station until the end of Expedition Two, at the end of July, when the Space Shuttle Discovery will return them to Earth.  The three experiments slated for Space Station Expedition Two explore areas of the fast-growing fields of biotechnology and agriculture.  One experiment is growing plants aboard the Space Station. Another examines why antibiotic production by microbes is enhanced in microgravity. A third is testing a new piece of equipment for crystallizing more than 1,000 biological samples.  “Industry investment in space remains high,” said Mark Nall, manager of NASA’s Space Product Development Program at the Marshall Center. “We assist companies developing experiments and help them explore how space research can contribute to the growth of their businesses.”

Russia's Leading Space Centers Agree On Cooperation
On Monday the Khrunichev State Scientific-Industrial Center has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Space Communication state-run company.
"It is a major event for us", said Space Communication chief Antonyuk at a briefing. "Now we have a reliable partner for renewing the Russian group of satellites on the basis of Russian-made spacecraft with the use of efficient means of delivery made by the Khrunichev Center. They are light carrier rockets Rokot, Angara-1.1, Angara-1.2, Angara-A5 and new heavy rockets Proton-M", said Antonyuk.
Khrunichev Center general director Alexander Medvedev said that "this long-term agreement allows us to develop a new direction family of light rockets for commercial uses". As soon as in 2003 such a rocket will put into orbit the first light 600-kilogramme communication satellite of a new generation. Use of light rockets for these ends will make much cheaper the putting of satellites into geostationary orbits from the launching pad of the Russian cosmodrome Plesetsk, said Medvedev. Earlier, all such launches were only made from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Marshall is the lead center for the Space Product Development program, which seeks to partner NASA research with industry and academia in order to use space to develop improved products and services. To accomplish these objectives, Space Product Development coordinates partnerships between Commercial Space Centers (CSCs), which are consortia of industry, academia, and government agencies, to conduct industry-driven, space-based, high technology research and development programs. Areas of study include macromolecular crystallography, advanced electronics, satellite and hybrid communication, space automation and robotics, materials, telemedicine, food technology, agriculture, and space vacuum epitaxy. The Commercial Space Centers are: BioServe Space Technologies
not only works on conducting biotechnology research, but on creating the devices that make that research possible or better. Biotechnology is a dynamic area that affects everything from medicine to electronics, and BioServe is working with industry to help ensure the full potential of this exciting field is reached. Solidification Design/Castnet Center works to improve the casting of metals and alloys, the process by which many of our everyday products are formed. By conducting research into all aspects of this process, from the proportions of materials to the way they cool and resolidify after processing, researchers can make improvements that result in better production and products on Earth.
