Space Product Development Program
Advanced Human Support Technology
Biomedical Research/Countermeasures Biomolecular Physics/Chemistry Biotechnology/Earth-based Applications ... Space Product Development The Space Product Development Program provides access to the unique environment of space for commercial researchers, to develop new or improved products and services on Earth. To implement the program, Commercial Space Centers primarily located at academic institutions, are currently funded by NASA and charged with developing industry partnerships to pursue specific areas of research. There are three main areas supported by Space Product Development: Biotechnology, Agribusiness, and Materials Research. The commercial product goals include improved crop development, enhanced refining processes for better fuel efficiency or casting processes that reduce waste, improved drug development, drug production rates, or drug delivery procedures, and use of advanced materials for hip or knee replacements that are more durable and less likely to be rejected by the body. The Commercial Space Centers partner with industry to help them discover the benefits that can come from microgravity research investigations done in an environment where the effects of gravity are reduced or eliminated. By making use of the unique conditions available using ground facilities, aircraft flying special trajectories, sounding rockets, the Space Shuttle, or the International Space Station, businesses are able to get the information they need to deal with problems they face today, and to develop new ideas for future development and application.

OBPR Research Themes
Strategic Research
Fundamental Research Research Partnerships NASA's Office of Biological and Physical Research creates unique cross-disciplinary research programs, bringing the basic sciences of physics, biology, and chemistry together with a wide range of engineering disciplines. The synergy and vigor achieved in this interdisciplinary enterprise helps the Agency meet its needs for new approaches to long-term mission requirements. It also ensures that NASA's contribution to fundamental research will be at the leading edge of science. Concurrently, the Enterprise encourages industry to utilize the space environment to develop new commercial products and services. OBPR's five year plan includes the following research themes, in relative priority order:
Strategic Research
The Strategic Research theme consists of flight and ground-based research that the Agency uniquely relies upon the OBPR to perform to enable NASA's mission to explore the Universe and search for life. This includes both basic and applied research that is:
  • Solicited and conducted in a highly focused, interdisciplinary fashion;

NASA fosters industry uses of the knowledge gained from space research to create new products and processes, to gain economic competitive advantages, to create new jobs, and to improve the quality of life on Earth. This program also provides the opportunity for students to participate both in the development of space research hardware and the rigors of industrial research.

This is accomplished by conducting industry driven, high technology applied research, which will lead to improved commercial products and services. NASA's Commercial Space Centers (CSC) - Are nonprofit consortia of industry, academia and government, focused on commercial space research and product development. The program was established by NASA in 1985 (then known as the Centers for Commercial Development of Space (CCDS) Program) to increase private sector interest and involvement in commercial space related activities. The program's goal is to stimulate advances in promising areas of space research and development with commercial applications.

Standing are (from left) astronauts David M. Brown, Laurel B. Clark, and Michael P. Anderson, mission specialists; and Ilan Ramon, payload specialist, representing the Israeli Space Agency. Challenger Center for Space Science Education shares a deep sense of loss with the crew of STS-107. Joe Allen, Chairman of the Board for Challenger Center, said: “We at Challenger Center hold the crew of Columbia and their families in our hearts and prayers during this difficult time, and we ask that the citizens of America and the world do the same. As people throughout the nation try to come to grips with the sad news about STS-107, we urge people to heed the words of the family members of the Columbia crew: 'Although we grieve deeply, as do the families of Apollo I and Challenger before us, the bold exploration of space must go on. Once the root cause of this tragedy is found and corrected, the legacy of Columbia must carry on for the benefit of our children and yours.'" June Scobee Rodgers, Founding Chairman of Challenger Center, stated: “Without risks, there’s no new knowledge, no discovery, no bold adventure—all of which help the human spirit to soar. As all of the Challenger families, in 1986, began the long journey towards peace and understanding, we ask for patience and cooperation for the families and their colleagues at this critical time. In respect for their loss, students, parents, and teachers wishing to express their condolences to the Columbia families are encouraged to do so at their local Challenger Learning Center in the form of notes, cards, or mementos."
