This story also reviews the discovery of a new moon around Jupiter, which was announced last week. LOOKING UP July 24: Station Sightings Thanks to a new NASA web site, stargazers can track the progress of the growing International Space Station from their own backyards. Because it reflects sunlight down to Earth, the ISS often looks like a slow-moving star as it crosses the sky. It can even appear as bright as the star Sirius if you know when and where to look. GLOBAL WARMING July 21: Contrary Thermometers Scientists are working to understand why the lower atmosphere isn't heating up as fast as some global warming models predict. The atmosphere appears to be more complex than computer simulations that researchers use to understand our planet's climate.

This resource list includes a small selection of especially effective astronomy activities designed for K-12 classes and science projects. We focus on those activities that are either hands-on, or at least encourage students to think for themselves, and not merely follow a cookbook recipe or fill in a few blanks. Each listing has a brief summary and comments; note that these comments are the opinion of the list's compiler and are not the "official policy" of Project ASTRO or the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Another person in astronomy education may have selected a different list of activities and may have had different things to say about them. Additions or suggestions for future editions of this list are most welcome. The Web is now a huge, and mostly unorganized, repository of information, and we make no claim that our list is complete. Instead, we simply hope that it can introduce you to the wide range of organizations and institutions that are working to put astronomy activities on the web, and to give you leads for activities that contain reasonable astronomy and emphasize hands-on, inquiry-based learning.

Space Research and You: The STS-107 Research Mission
The 80-plus experiments aboard Space Shuttle mission STS-107 represent the latest application of microgravity as a fundamental, versatile tool to gain insights in space and improve life on Earth as well as enable future space exploration.
Please note: if you are looking for information about the STS-107 Tragedy or Investigation, please see the NASA home page . This site contains only information about the mission science activities. The last half-century of human inquiry into the basics of life, materials, and energy has yielded an astonishing range of answers and capabilities. It also has yielded new questions that require more sophisticated investigations to understand and apply the subtle, elegant workings of the inner universe. Many investigations have been stymied by inescapable effects of Earth's gravity. But the last halfcentury also saw scientists start using the microgravity of orbit to turn those effects off and thus unmask basic phenomena that play key roles in biology, physics, and chemistry on Earth as well as space. STS-107 is a Shuttle mission dedicated to research investigating human physiology, fire suppression, and other areas of research relevant to people across the globe, hence the theme Space Research and You STS stands for "Space Transportation System", a.k.a the Space Shuttle, and "107" is the "flight tail number" or the 107th flight of the Space Shuttle, although the order of missions may have changed after assignment of the flight number. The research on STS-107 builds on our experiences with Skylab and Spacelab, and supports longer, more ambitious research aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The Shuttle Columbia and its crew of seven will devote this 16-day mission to a mixed complement of competitively selected and commercially sponsored research in the space, life, and physical sciences.

http://www.astronautical.org/spaceforamerica/summary.html
Summary Summary Introduction Observations Beliefs ... Recommendations This statement, endorsed by the space related professional organizations and institutions listed above, was prepared by the National Committee on Space. The Committee, established by the American Astronautical Society in February 1995, is composed of representatives from the various professional organizations. What follows stems from concerns the organizations share about the future of one of our nation's premier activities: the exploration and use of space. Thirty eight years ago, humans placed an object in space, heralding the Space Age and opening a new frontier. This single epochal event ignited the imagination of people throughout the world and led to a cornucopia of great discoveries and achievements in the decades that followed. Humans soared into space, explored the Moon, probed the depths of the universe, and employed technologies developed for space achievements to provide greater security, better health, higher education, and higher quality of life on Earth. Recognizing the vast potential of this unique treasure, the American people strongly supported the exploration, development, and use of space, while enjoying its fruits. Now, However, the world has entered an era that has necessitated a sea change in the nation's priorities for dealing with new realities. Most federal budgets, including for civil space, are being cut to reduce the federal budget deficit. The implications of a steadily declining public investment in space over the years could be profound and far reaching. Overall space activity will slow down, the space industrial base will shrink, and the momentum of the progress being made will be lost. The nation's ability to meet its future needs could be seriously weakened.

WISCONSIN MODEL ACADEMIC STANDARDS
FOR SCIENCE
INTRODUCTION
The study of science allows Wisconsin students to experience the richness and excitement of the natural world. As adults they will face complex questions requiring scientific thinking, reasoning, and the ability to make informed decisions. Scientific knowledge prepares students for the future and helps them acquire skills needed to hold meaningful and productive jobs. These standards recognize that science is for all students-the essence of science literacy. Clarity and Specificity Citizens of Wisconsin are the primary audience for the science standards. The standards set clear and specific goals for teaching and learning, and they are not meant to supplant curriculum. Instead, they should help school districts to develop curriculum units that focus on specific academic results. Districts are encouraged to engage in professional conversations suggested by this document and by the National Science Education Standards* (see Glossary of Terms) Parents and citizens in the district should be a part of this conversation.

a scientific exploration of life beyond our planet. The search for life in the Universe has always held a fascination for mankind. Today the scientific discipline of exobiology has developed into a highly sophisticated, massive research effort at many different sites and levels. In 23 European countries, students between 14 and 18 are preparing projects representing their ideas about life in the Universe. The search is on!
The possibility that there is life in the Universe has always excited the general public and scientists are equally enthusiastic. Physicists, biologists, chemists, cosmologists, and astronomers are researching all over Europe to try to answer the age-old question: is there life in the Universe? The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Southern Observatory (ESO), in cooperation with European Association for Astronomy Education (EAAE), organised a competition to find out what young people in Europe think. The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) are also involved.

(303) 492-3525 david.klaus@colorado.edu This course is primarily intended to familiarize engineering students with factors affecting living organisms (ranging from single cells to humans) in the reduced-gravity environment of space flight. Unique engineering insight will be gained regarding design requirements for advanced life support systems , space habitats and space biotechnology payloads. NASA programs associated with the human exploration and development of space , along with current goals and challenges of biological and physical research activities, are reflected and identified throughout the lecture topics. Life support fundamentals, as they relate to basic human sustenance, are covered initially. Next, the lectures turn to more detailed descriptions of the physiological adaptations that occur to people in space, with pertinent background information presented for each topic. Corresponding biomedical countermeasures needed to maintain crew health for long duration missions will also be discussed. Finally, the underlying physical mechanisms affected by gravity, along with experimental design criteria, will be addressed. Emphasis will be placed on homework assignments that include writing a journal review article, preparing a research grant proposal, and conducting a peer-review process for both submittals.
