The Certificate of Merit Award program is a national program honoring high school women having high achievement in math and science. It exists to encourage young ladies to consider engineering as a degree. It informs high school women, parents, teachers, and the public about opportunities for women in engineering. Each school nominates three young ladies. The awards are presented to the students at the year end school assembly.
Many SWE members go to the assemblies and present the awards personally to the students - certificates and a pen to the top female. Expanding Your Horizons
Expanding Your Horizons in science and math is a national yearly conference for 6th to 12th grade young women interested in career options. The Math/Science Network, the originator and co-sponsor of the event, holds more than 70 Expanding Your Horizons conferences held nationwide each year.
The goals of the conference are to:
  • To increase young women's interest in mathematics and science To foster awareness of career opportunities for women in math and science related fields To provide participants the opportunity to meet and form personal contacts with women working in traditional and nontraditional fields.

  • Understand the nature and history of our Solar System, and what makes Earth similar to and different from its planetary neighbors; Understand the origin and evolution of life on Earth; Understand the external forces, including comet and asteroid impacts, that affect life and the habitability of Earth; Identify locales and resources for future human habitation within the solar system; Understand how life may originate and persist beyond Earth; and Make the solar system a part of the human experience in the same way that Earth is, and hence lay the groundwork for human expansion into the solar system in the coming century.
Back to top NASA's Space Science Enterprise Strategic Plan describes the science goals and objectives that will lead toward answers to the fundamental questions: How did the universe begin and evolve? How did we get here? Where are we going? Are we alone? The plan lays out a near-term program of activities to pursue these goals. It outlines how NASA's Office of Space Science will invent and demonstrate the new technologies needed to pursue this ambitious vision, and how it will contribute to human space flight. It also explains plans to share the excitement and understanding of these discoveries with teachers, schoolchildren, and the general public.

CASSLS Center for Advanced Studies in the Space Life Sciences SUMMER 2002 NEWSLETTER
About CASSLS and the MBL
In 1995, the NASA Life Sciences Division and the Marine Biological Laboratory established a cooperative agreement with the formation of the Center for Advanced Studies in the Space Life Sciences (CASSLS at MBL). The Center’s overall goals are to increase awareness of the NASA Life Sciences Program within the basic science community, and to examine and discuss potential uses of microgravity and other aspects of space flight as probes to provide new insights to fundamental processes of importance to basic biology and medicine. Through symposia, workshops and seminars, CASSLS advises NASA and the biological science community on a wide variety of topics. Since the Center began its operations in July 1995, more than 550 people have attended CASSLS workshops. Typically these workshops last for two to four days and feature an international array of scientists and NASA/International space agency staff. In many cases, workshop chairs have a long time association with the MBL. Workshop schedules incorporate many opportunities for interaction and discussion. A major outcome for workshops is the publication of proceedings in a peer-reviewed journal. To date, more than 120 peer-reviewed articles, including meeting proceedings, have been published. Moreover, our meetings introduce outstanding biologists to research questions and prominent scientists involved in gravitational biology and the NASA Life Sciences Program.

Content Standards: K-4
    Science as Inquiry
    CONTENT STANDARD A:
As a result of activities in grades K-4, all students should develop
    • Abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry
    • Understanding about scientific inquiry
    DEVELOPING STUDENT ABILITIES AND UNDERSTANDING
From the earliest grades, students should experience science in a form that engages them in the active construction of ideas and explanations that enhance their opportunities to develop the abilities of doing science. Teaching science as inquiry provides teachers with the opportunity to develop student abilities and to enrich student understanding of science. Students should do science in ways that are within their developmental capabilities. This standard sets forth some abilities of scientific inquiry appropriate for students in grades K-4. In the early years of school, students can investigate earth materials, organisms, and properties of common objects. Although children develop concepts and vocabulary from such experiences, they also should develop inquiry skills. As students focus on the processes of doing investigations, they develop the ability to ask scientific questions, investigate aspects of the world around them, and use their observations to construct reasonable explanations for the questions posed. Guided by teachers, students continually develop their science knowledge. Students should also learn through the inquiry process how to communicate about their own and their peers' investigations and explanations.
