Committees
SScAC Planetary Protection Members ... Curator: Craig Tupper
SScAC Subcommittees The Space Science Advisory Committee has chartered four subcommittees to help advise NASA:
  • The Sun-Earth Connections Advisory Subcommittee (SECAS) is chartered to provide advice and recommendations to the Space Science Advisory Committee (SScAC) on the NASA research program for the study of the Sun and its connections to the space environments of the Earth, other planets, comets, and other small bodies of the solar system, and to the heliosphere out to its interface with the interstellar medium. This advice and recommendations concerns all aspects of the Sun-Earth Connections Program, including the operation of the research program; priorities among relevant flight missions in planning, development, and operation; mission operations and data analysis; needs for advanced technology; approaches to reduce costs and enhance effectiveness of current and future missions; and on interdisciplinary connections to other space science themes. SECAS Members SEC Theme Homepage SEC Roadmap
  • The Astronomical Search for Origins and Planetary Systems Advisory Subcommittee (Origins) is chartered to provide advice and recommendations to the SScAC on all maters relating to the Origins program. It provides advice and counsel on various aspects of the observational and theoretical research efforts in areas such as star formation, exobiology, galaxy formation and evolution, planetary formation, atmospheric chemistry, and the effects of life on planetary atmospheres. The subcommittee provides a forum where researchers from universities, government laboratories, and industry, as appropriate, may exchange ideas and views to resolve common problems, develop new ideas for technical and scientific management and develop new technical areas and approaches for implementing the NASA Origins Program.

Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE)
r.bombaugh@csuohio.edu
Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) is a worldwide science and education program that coordinates the work of students, teachers, and scientists to study and understand the global environment. GLOBE is an international partnership that involves countries around the world. Its goals are to increase environmental awareness of individuals throughout the world, to contribute to scientific understanding of the Earth, and to help students everywhere reach higher standards in science and mathematics. Primary and secondary school teachers interested in receiving additional information should contact Ruth Bombaugh at r.bombaugh@csuohio.edu Project ASTRO
Project ASTRO is an exciting program sponsored by the Ohio Space Grant Consortium (OSGC) and OAI . The program is designed for teachers of grades 4 through 9. Each teacher is matched with a volunteer astronomer and learns how to use astronomy and space science activities to engage and motivate students. As a Project ASTRO teacher, you must commit to attending the training workshop, teach space science/astronomy during the school year, attend two follow-up sessions during the school year, and have a minimum of four visits with your partner astronomer.

A note about National and New Hampshire
science education standards:
In 1996 the National Research Council published the National Science Education Standards . This publication identified 8 topics in which students should eventually become competent, and organized each of the topics into specific goals and objectives. Click here for more information on the NSES. In the table below we show how various Hubbard Brook online activities and resources meet the National Standards. Because Hubbard Brook is in New Hampshire, we have also listed how each of the activities relates to the NH K-12 Science Curriculum Framework , published by the NH Department of Education = Standard addressed

The Mars Rock - Are we alone in the universe?
Science's and theology's most talked about rock is the 1.6 kgs (4.2 lb.), potato-shaped meteorite ALH84001. It was discovered on the Allan Hills ice field in Antarctica in 1984. The geochemical composition of the gas trapped within the rock is such a close match to the unique composition of the Martian atmosphere that it provides solid evidence that the rock comes from Mars. The rock formed beneath the Martian surface 4.5 billion years ago, and thus dates back to a very early period in the formation of Mars. There is evidence that water seeped into the rock 3.6 billion years ago, when the climate of Mars was much warmer and wetter than it is now. This rock remained under the surface until 16 million years ago, when it was blasted into space by an asteroid striking the Martian surface. The rock drifted through space until it fell to Earth 13,000 years ago.
Mars Rock ALH84001 The evidence for life having once existed in ALH84001 is a bit circumstantial. There are four separate observations that suggest the work of tiny bacteria:

The International Space Station theme supports activities for establishing a permanent human presence in Earth orbit. The ISS provides a long-duration, habitable laboratory for science and research activities investigating the limits of human performance, expanding human experience in living and working in space, and enabling the commercial development of space. The Space Shuttle theme builds on the Shuttle's primacy as the world's most reliable and versatile launch system. The Shuttle, first launched in 1981, provides the only capability in the United States for human access to space. The Space and Flight Support theme encompasses several programs: Space Communications, Launch Services, Rocket Propulsion Testing, and Advanced Systems.
