Principal Investigator: Patrick J. Gannon, Ph.D. Organization: Mount Sinai School of Medicine Project Title: Defying Gravity: Enduring Life in Space The 1996 National Science Education Standards (NSES) reported that scientific literacy has become increasingly important in the U.S. workplace where people are more often required to learn, reason, think creatively, make informed decisions and solve problems. However, results of the 3rd International Mathematics and Science Survey reported a marked decline in science and mathematical knowledge from 8th-12th grades in the U.S. compared to an international average of 41 countries, many of which have invested in creation of a scientifically literate workforce. As such, we have chosen to focus our science educational outreach efforts on the 9th grade, which we consider to represent a potentially pivotal, formative educational stage at which to confront this underperformance and to help them prepare for formal examinations. Defying Gravity hands on, inquiry based curriculum was fine-tuned, primarily assessed, and adjusted as was considered necessary within partnership/teams of MSSM scientists /educators, six high school science teachers and nine 10-11th grade students. From the original 14 curriculum modules, lesson plans for 8 modules were put together by teachers and tested by the students for grade-level suitability, appeal/motivational factors, and laboratory inquiry-based session doability. Teachers also integrated and linked lesson plans for each of the modules with science education standards and performance indicators. Use of an institutional

JANE K. PIRNIQUE ROGERS MIDDLE SCHOOL GRADE LEVEL AND COURSE: 8th grade Earth Science TOPIC: Mesozoic Era in Arkansas SYNOPSIS OF LESSON: This lesson is a revision of a lesson on the Mesozoic Era in Arkansas, based on the research I have done this summer at Great Lakes Chemical Company. Student will continue their study of the geology of Arkansas from 225 million year ago to 65 million years ago by learning about the types of strata laid down by the Gulf of Mexico while it covered this area and as it withdrew. We will also learn of the economic importance to this community of what happened and why the bromine industry of the United State is centered here in sough Arkansas. This is one section of an interdisciplinary unit on Arkansas that will involve language arts (Arkansas writers), history (Arkansas History) and science. CONCEPTS Concepts to be covered in this lesson are: 1) that most of Arkansas was once covered by a shallow sea, during which time sediments were deposited forming various limestone strata, 2) that the sea withdrew, exposing the surface to erosion, and 3) that other geologic events took place causing faulting and folding to occur, trapping oil, gas, and salt waters in certain layers. We will also explore the economic impact of these geologic events on this specific community. PREREQUISITE LEARNING Student will already have learned the four eras of geologic time and when they occurred. They will have learned about strata, how it is usually deposited, how it is deformed, about permeable and impermeable layers and their importance in trapping material in and area.

    LIGHT REFLECTION
    GRADES: 3-6
Recognize that light can be reflected and that smooth shiny surfaces like mirrors are good reflectors.
    MATERIALS:
    • handouts with a picture of a small hockey net on one side and a hockey puck on the other (at a 45 degree angle from the net works best)
    • mirrors-one mirror per group and then if you want to challenge them even further provide two and then three mirrors per group
    METHOD:
  • Ask what they see when they look in mirror. Have students look in mirrors and discover the reversed image by waving to themselves in the mirror, winking to themselves, etc.
  • Ask if they have ever noticed anything strange with ambulances. Then demonstrate with a mirror and the word ambulance written backwards on piece of paper. Also provide names of student written backwards and demonstrate to the class.
  • Handout activity sheet, "THE AMAZING MIRROR HOCKEY SHOOTOUT," and have students work in pairs to see who can make the most goals! Have students choose a hockey team to be! Explain that the partner holds the mirror while the other student tries to score a goal by drawing a straight line from the puck to the empty net. The partner also holds a piece of paper over the student's hand so the student can only see the reflection of her/his hand in the mirror. When the first student is done then switch partners. Keep score of the number of times the puck make sit to the net!
  • NOTE: You can make this even more challenging by using two mirrors and three mirrors! This is really neat because you can set it up so that one team (student) shoots to one net and the other student shoots to the other.
