NEWS BYTES: Space News An Alien Jupiter STScI Artist's drawing of a new Jupiter-like planet. Another Solar System Found A team of scientists recently found a Jupiter-sized planet in orbit around a sun-like star in the constellation Cancer. This planet orbits its star at the same distance our Jupiter orbits our Sun. This is an important find, for we know Jupiters in the middle of solar systems help collect and divert stray asteroids and comets from hitting smaller planets, like our Earth. To find Jupiters in the middle of other solar systems opens up the possibility that smaller planets out there are being protected as well, enough so that life might have a chance to evolve on them. Nokia to cut 1,800 jobs
Nokia, the world's biggest mobile phone maker, plans to cut 1,800 jobs at its struggling wireless infrastructure business.
The company, based in Espoo, Finland, which issued six sales warnings last year, say most of the jobs would go at its research and development, sales and marketing and other departments in Finland.
Last month, Nokia said network sales were expected to decline by 15 percent to 20 percent this year. FULL STORY Nokia cuts hit European markets

Whether they turn out to be Apollo-type capsules or shuttle-style orbiters with wings, NASA is determined to speed up development of orbital space planes that within the next decade could be docking two or three at a time at the international space station. NASA envisions a system where multiple space planes, each carrying four astronauts, could taxi back and forth to the station. That would allow scientific work being conducted on the orbital outpost to dictate how many humans are needed aboard at any given time. The aging shuttles could then be used primarily as cargo vessels. Current plans for the space plane, for which NASA is requesting $550 million in its 2004 budget $2.4 billion over the next few years call for a vehicle that could be used as a crew escape pod for the Space Station by 2010 and could be used to ferry astronauts to and from the station by 2012.

NASA postpones launch of infrared space telescope NASA delayed Thursday the Florida launch of a $740 million infrared telescope that will let scientists see much of the universe hidden from other space observatories. Astronauts wrap up final spacewalk at space station Astronauts aboard the international space station ventured outside for more than six hours Tuesday to wrap up maintenance tasks on what was probably the last spacewalk for months. High over Texas and just short of home, space shuttle Columbia fell to pieces Saturday, February 1, 2003, raining debris over hundreds of miles of countryside. Seven astronauts perished a gutwrenching loss for a country and world already staggered by tragedy.

Astronomers Will Use SIRTF To Study Star Formation In Nearby Galaxies

Tucson - Apr 11, 2003
Our Milky Way galaxy will produce about one new star this year. But other nearby galaxies will pump out hundreds of new stars, while other nearby galaxies gave birth to their last star about 10 billion years ago. To help answer why this might be so, astronomers will use the Space Infrared Telescope Facility that is scheduled for launch next Friday, April 18, aboard a Delta 2 from Cape Canaveral.
